Ryan Day Radio Show: Ryan Day Thinks Ohio State-Indiana Will “Come Down to Leadership,” Calls on Will Howard and Veterans to “Rally” the Team After Seth McLaughlin’s Injury

Ryan Day

On Carson Hinzman and Austin Siereveld

  • "It's an opportunity. Every week is an opportunity."
  • "Nothing that's happened in the past matters moving forward. It's all about what you do moving forward. All the work that's been put in leading up to this point now has to pay off."
  • "These guys are gonna have great opportunities."
  • Day said Hinzman and Siereveld have experience and will benefit from the bonds they've created with the teammates around them on the offensive line. He said they'll also benefit from blocking Tyleik Williams and Ty Hamilton in practice each day.

On how Ohio State will respond to Seth McLaughlin's injury

  • "Our leaders have got to lead."
  • "This team wants to win. They're not interested in individual accolades."
  • "The whole team, the offense, the offensive line is crushed for Seth. But you wake up the next morning, you gotta move on. Nobody cares. The game of football doesn't care. That's the way it works. We do. We want Seth around until he has his surgery and then we'll go from there. But at the end of the day, we have to rally. The leaders have to do that."

On Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson

  • "I thought they were running downhill. They're gonna need to run downhill in this game. These guys do a lot of moving and shaking in different fronts."
  • "We all have to sacrifice if we want the betterment of the entire team and the goals we want to achieve. It's not about individuals. Both of those guys have sacrificed this year."
  • Day said Judkins and Henderson have been able to "play fast, downhill and physical" at this point in the season because they made sacrifices earlier in the year.

On Ohio State's scout team

  • "Our scout teams have been excellent this year."
  • "We are able to utilize more coaches now... and have scout team meetings and really mimic the body language, the looks, the coverages and all those things. When we go to practice every day, we are working through the issues and not working through them in a game."
  • "The scout teams have done a great job all season but in particular this week of showing what Indiana is gonna do on offense and defense."

On Ohio State's special teams, Indiana's special teams

  • "They've had some good returns," Day said of Indiana. "They've played well on special teams."
  • "We need the special teams to continue to be a plus for us. We're talking about the battle of field position in a matchup game. Every yard matters. Every inch matters."
  • Day said Ohio State has "spent a good amount of time" on special teams this season and that "the focus has been good" in special teams meetings this week.

On Caleb Downs

  • "He triggers. He covers a lot of ground quickly. He's explosive."
  • "He puts a lot of work in. I think he's a great example to some of our younger players to see that this is a guy who is very, very talented, but he puts in just as much work, if not more work, than anybody on the defensive side of the ball."
  • "We're gonna need him this week."
  • "We're gonna have to have that secondary playing sound but being really competitive and getting after it."

On Sonny Styles

  • "A lot of production, especially in the second half."
  • "He can do things at all three levels."
  • Day said people forget that Styles moved to linebacker this offseason and doesn't have much experience at the position. "The more he's seeing things, the faster he's playing."

On Ohio State making second-half adjustments

  • "We have a veteran group, so it's important to recognize what's going on in a game and make those adjustments."
  • "I thought we did a nice job in the middle eight (minutes) this past game."
  • "I think understanding situations is as important as anything."

On making in-game adjustments

  • "We got to be on our game."
  • "We got to be communicating at a high level."
  • Day said adjustments can happen quicker now because of the tablets Ohio State has access to.
  • "Some of those TV timeouts are so long, you've got time. You might as well find something to do. Give me the tablet. We'll get some guys coached up in the huddle."

On Indiana's passing game vs. Ohio State's secondary

  • "They're very balanced."
  • "They're gonna throw the ball in the RPO game and take their shots."
  • "They're gonna challenge our guys in the secondary, for sure. I think the quarterback does a nice job in terms of locating the football, getting the ball out on time. The receivers do a nice job of running routes... I also think they play the ball really well."
  • "You see it in the numbers this year. A good challenge for our guys."

On Jack Sawyer

  • "Jack has been a great leader for us."
  • "He really embodies what it means to be a Buckeye. He loves his teammates. He loves this school. He loves the Buckeyes. He plays really hard out there. ... He's bringing guys with him. That's what leadership is about. ... He's been strong in there. He's had a great presence."
  • "He knows he's got to be at his best just like the rest of those leaders."

On Carnell Tate

  • "He's a team player."
  • "I just think so many guys have so much respect for how he handled himself."
  • "He's got a lot of respect in this building. A lot of people care a lot about him."
  • "The whole team rallied around him. I think he felt his support."
  • Day said Brandon Inniss has "always been there" for Tate. "I think he's one of the closest people in his life. You can see their relationship. When Carnell scored, Brandon was probably in the end zone by the time he landed. That's the way Brandon is. He is such a competitive dude. He loves to play."

On Will Howard, his leadership on and off the field

  • "That's what we need here. Here we go. Game 11, top-five matchup, it's gonna come down to leadership. The No. 1 job for the quarterback is to lead the team to the end zone and lead the team to victory. His leadership has been excellent. Excellent."
  • Day said Howard has taken command of the offense this season and has built rapport with Ohio State's running backs, wide receivers and tight ends.
  • Day said Chip Kelly is the only coach who communicates with Will Howard via helmet communications. Day said he has a button he can press on his headset to communicate with Howard, but he hasn't used it much this season.

On Indiana's defense

  • "They're moving every play. They have multiple fronts, multiple coversages. They are very aggressive in what they do."
  • "A lot of movement up front. They do a good job of it – a lot of TFLs and they tie it all together in how they call it. They're very good. Their backend is tied in well."
  • "It's a great challenge for our offense."

Put me in the camp of being skeptical of Indiana. The have benefitted from outscheming equal or lesser talented opponents to this point. I’m not discounting the job that their coaching staff has done to this point. Everything being said, how do they do against a team playing their third top 5 matchup, with significantly more talent in their building? Did I mention that our coaching staff is more experienced in these types of games? Even if they would put together a great game plan I don’t think it’s nearly enough.

I like the Buckeyes by 14+ this weekend.

SEC (It just means more.. even its losses are wins)

Urban Meyer Can't Fathom Lane Kiffin Assertion That Coaches Want to Avoid SEC Title

The Ole Miss coach said that some of his fellow SEC coaches are hoping to avoid the conference championship game ahead of the CFP.

The College Football Playoff's expansion to 12 teams this season has changed the equation for teams looking to make the field, especially when it comes to conference championship games. For teams in leagues like the Big 12 and ACC, which may only receive single bids to the Playoff, winning the title game is essential. For the top teams in leagues like the SEC and Big Ten, some believe getting extra rest and avoiding a potential third loss on the résumé outweighs the benefits of potentially winning a conference championship and securing a bye as a top-four seed in the Playoff.

According to Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin, some of his SEC counterparts are among that group.

"The conference championship could have a big impact both ways for people. I’ve talked to other coaches, so I’ll just kind of give you the feeling from some other coaches, that they don’t want to be in it," Kiffin said of the SEC championship game on Monday. "You know, the reward to get a bye [in the Playoff] versus the risk to get knocked out completely. I mean, that’s a that’s a pretty big—that’s a really big risk just to get a bye."

Former Ohio State and Florida coach Urban Meyer—a winner of two SEC championships and three Big Ten championships—acknowledged the risk that Kiffin and other coaches are concerned about, but cannot imagine a situation in which he wouldn't want to play for the league title. Meyer couldn't come to terms with the concept after his podcast co-host Rob Stone compared the situation to college basketball teams bowing out early in their conference tournament with their NCAA tournament bids already secured.

"I'll be honest, I'm shutting you out because I can't even think like that. What do you mean you hope you don’t go to the championship game?" Meyer said on The Triple Option podcast Wednesday. "You get up in the morning and as you’re driving to work, you say, 'Boy, I hope we don’t win the SEC Championship.' That doesn’t compute."

SEC (It just means more.. even its losses are wins)

SEC Commissioner Takes Shot at Other Conferences Over Strength of Schedule

As the college football edition of Selection Sunday nears on Dec. 8, coaches, athletic directors and league administrators are in full lobbying mode.

The College Football Playoff selection committee is just weeks away from releasing its final rankings and the first field of the 12-team era. As the football edition of Selection Sunday nears on Dec. 8, coaches, athletic directors and league administrators are in full lobbying mode.

As of this week, No. 3 Texas, No. 7 Alabama, No. 9 Ole Miss and No. 10 Georgia would all make the 12-team field. Tennessee is ranked No. 11, but would be on the outside looking in; No. 14 BYU would jump into the field as the fifth-highest ranked conference champion. The Big Ten would land the same number of programs in the field as the SEC based on the current rankings, with Big 12, ACC, Mountain West each sending conference champions as automatic bids and independent program Notre Dame landing at at-large. Three more SEC programs—No. 15 Texas A&M, No. 18 South Carolina and No. 23 Missouri—are also in the committee's latest rankings, although they're on the outside looking in.

It is no surprise that SEC commissioner Greg Sankey believes that his league should be getting a lion's share of the at-large bids. He took to X on Wednesday to make that clear, sharing a set of aggregated strength of schedule metrics that have six SEC programs up at the top.

The depth of the SEC is undoubtedly impressive, and the league has a host of teams with multiple losses as a result. Texas leads the way at 9-1, Texas A&M is 8-2 with a 5-1 SEC record and the next four teams are all 8-2 with both losses coming in league play.

Strength of schedule is just one factor, of course. It is hard to see undefeated or one loss Big Ten teams being left out, there four automatic bids outside of the SEC, and Notre Dame is almost guaranteed a bid if they don't slip up down the stretch. Sankey will likely do plenty of politicking over the next few weeks, but without a material change for the other schools in the mix here, it seems unlikely that he gets the five or six SEC teams that he wants in the field.

In a surprising twist, the Buckeyes are actually a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award. That award is given to the best offensive line in the country every year. Never in a million years did any Ohio State fan think that it was possible they'd be a semifinalist for that award.

This game could seal the Ohio State football team winning the Joe Moore Award

The Ohio State football team has a chance to seal up winning the Joe Moore Award for the best offensive line in this game against Indiana.

images%2FImagnImages%2Fmmsport%2F151%2F01jd8a42xs0c74hkk28w.jpg

The Ohio State football team has a big game this weekend. They take on an Indiana team that is ranked in the top five. The Hoosiers haven't lost a game yet this season. IU comes in off a bye week and is ready to show that they should be taken seriously as a CFP threat.

Ryan Day's Ohio State Buckeyes are tasked with making sure that doesn't happen. They have to do it without the services of Seth McLaughlin, who tore his Achilles during practice. Now, the Buckeyes have two starting offensive linemen who are out for the year.

Because of the newest injury up front, the Buckeyes now have to reshuffle the offensive line again. It will be Carson Hinzman at center and Austin Siereveld at left guard. Ohio State will need elite offensive line play. If they get it, their line could win a major award at the end of the year.

The Ohio State football team could seal Joe Moore Award with strong performance vs. IU

If the Buckeyes can push around the Hoosiers and win this game by at least double-digits, there's a good chance the offensive line can seal up the Joe Moore Award. That award is given to the best offensive line in the country. Ohio State has a chance to show their depth.

Ohio State has had a lot of different players start up front for them this season. If they can show the depth that they have, with all of the injuries they've had to deal with, no other team can match that. Ohio State has never won this award before and this would be a very surprising year to win it.

2024 tOSU Defense Discussion

Wiscy had a play in the 4th quarter where they did a corner blitz and the guy came in at Dillon Gabriel untouched and slowed down and stayed in front of him, didn’t let Gabriel out and then the other rushers got there and everybody sacked him.

It was something I’d love to see from our pass rushers, instead of running at the QB full speed and then getting juked and lose contain.
That play was beautifully executed. Heady play by they kid.

This will be the last of 5 matchups between top-5 teams in the 2024 regular season

Ohio State will have been in three of those 5 games

Georgia was in both of the other two

Ohio State and all of its opponents are still in the top 5

Only one of the teams involved in the other two top-5 matchups is still in the top 5 (Tx)

tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Not that anyone asked me nor cares, but I totally prefer this method of spending some of the NIL dollars on proven players at the D1 level. Use this to fill the areas of need and/or when there are opportunities we just cannot pass up, like a certain Safety from down south.

Seems like a much more effective way to constantly compete for championships in the modern (NIL) era. Let others chase the "best recruiting class this year" championships.

I do not envy the staff for having to balance talent with culture to optimize that investment. The complexity of that job has increased exponentially.

*2024 tCun Shenanigans, Arguments, Cobras, Feckless Marmots, Fake Pandas, Dirty Cheaters

If I had to choose situations, it'd be cheese without even having to think about it.

Cheese > Rotting Rodent

TBH, even in the best of non-cheating times, why would you even consider tsun over cheese. Cheese is a great school and if you're worth a damn, the league will find you. Candidly, that'd be my pitch if I was Fick.

Perhaps a result of what happened in the 2024 bowl game when the center was switched due to discipline - yeah, I know it was losing Brown in the 1st qtr -
After some reflection, the 2024 debacle was a result of benching Hinzman and putting Jones at center, and also starting a not very strong Vimahi, because Hinzman did a stupid podcast. UGA's players who have committed crimes have been treated better than Hinzman has been for a freaking podcast. Lol. Add the Brown injury. It was a cluster F.

Hinzman has experience at center. He looked strong at guard and Siervold has looked good when he was given the opportunity to start in place of Tegra.

I think this Oline can get it done, but as a whole they have not worked together. Hopefully the kinks get worked out as the game and the rest of the season progresses.

IU has bigger depth issues.

We shall see.... go Bucks!

Ohio State Women's Basketball (2023-24 B1G CHAMPS)

What to make of lopsided Ohio State women’s basketball win over Ohio University

Coach McGuff’s Buckeyes broke a record against Ohio, but how does a 64-point win benefit Ohio State?

It’s ok to admit that non-conference basketball seasons are mostly boring. Subtract a couple of big-name opponents and the only thing getting fans to the conference schedule in one piece is the general excitement of a new season and counting the days until the next game against a side that brings a challenge.

If a Big Ten schedule release was accompanied by music, it would be a loud, exciting, marching band with games against new conference additions like USC and UCLA, and the tried and true rivalries against the Iowas and Indianas of the Big Ten’s old guard.

Ohio State women’s basketball’s non-conference schedule, however, would be accompanied by a sad trombone.

Outside of a game against a might-be-ranked Stanford on Dec. 20, it’s a slate of mid-majors whose most intriguing game element is likely a connection between the schools off the court. Wednesday, it was an in-state “rivalry” against the Ohio Bobcats of the MAC in which the Buckeyes hold a 24-1 record. The Buckeyes beat OU 106-42.

This is no offense to mid-majors whatsoever. The most exciting parts of the basketball season are often when squads not in a Power Four conference beat one of the big teams. Big meaning has more recruiting power and money.

However, until the game is played you never know how it's going to end up.

The Scarlet and Gray almost fell to one of the most consistent mid-majors in women’s basketball on Sunday. Belmont gave Ohio State their all, only to give up a nine-point lead with five minutes remaining. OSU came back to win that one 67-63. It was a diamond in the rough in the early goings of the season.

In Athens on Wednesday, from the jump the Buckeyes didn’t look like a team that was interested in repeating that performance.

“We had played really hard Sunday versus Belmont, but we didn’t execute very well on either end of the floor,” head coach Kevin McGuff said. “And so we wanted to, it was more of a mental thing with our execution, which I thought we were much better today.”

“Much better” is putting it lightly.

Ohio State outplayed the Bobcats in nearly every statistical category. The Buckeyes outshot Ohio 48.3 percent to 25.5 percent, hit 11 three-point shots compared to five for the home side, and had a total number of shots almost doubling the Bobcats 89-47.

Ohio did do one thing better, hitting more free throws, and with more efficiency, an issue that was key in the Buckeyes’ win Sunday when they shot 52 percent from the line, leaving 12 points on the free throw line.

That obviously didn’t matter on Wednesday, but it will down the road.

Away from missing free throws and everything clicked, but how does it help to beat up on a mid-major riddled with injury in the grand scheme of things?
