New offensive line coach Tyler Bowen is quickly showing what he is capable of.
In complete fairness to erstwhile
Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye, what he was able to do with the offensive line last season was remarkable. Having lost the two best players in his room and still being able to get his unit to turn in national championship-level performances will not, and should not, be forgotten by Buckeye fans.
However, I think that most OSU onlookers also realize that while the new offensive line coach for the
Arizona Cardinals was fair adept at developing talent, he wasn’t especially successful at bringing it in. So, as it had for the better part of a decade, Ohio State’s offensive line recruiting fell far behind many — if not all — of the other position groups on the team.
But that no longer seems to be the case as new o-line coach Tyler Bowen has checked the two top items off of his to-do list in just his first two months on the job. Just two weeks ago, Bowen and
the Buckeyes secured the commitment of the No. 1 offensive lineman in the state of Ohio,
Maxwell Riley. He is the No. 84 player in the country according to 247Sports and the No. 2 player in the state of Ohio.
That is a very important get for the Buckeyes as keeping homegrown talent in state is always a priority, especially at a position of need, but Bowen wasn’t done yet.
On Tuesday, he got the commitment from the No. 2 offensive lineman in the Buckeye state as
Sam Greer committed to play for the Scarlet and Gray. The Akron native is the No. 188 player in the country according to 247Sports Composite Rankings and the No. 7 player from Ohio.
He stands 6-foot-6.5 and weighs in at a healthy 310 pounds. Despite being a member of the 2026 recruiting class, he only has one year of high school football under his belt, so he has room to grow. Injuries kept him off the field for his freshman and sophomore campaigns, but he showed why he was such a highly desired prospect as a junior.
In addition to his exploits on the gridiron, Greer is also an excellent basketball player, which only serves to speak to the athlete that he is. Given time to play another season of high school football before heading down 71 to Columbus, there is a lot to be excited about from Greer.
If you check out the video in his commitment post, you can see the moment when he tells Bowen that he is officially ready to become a Buckeye. The obvious bond that he already has with his future position coach speaks to what a great hire Ryan Day (also featured briefly in the video) made in Bowen and how much they both think of Greer.
Its been an amazing journey, grateful to have been surrounded by so many good people on my way, thank you to all the coach’s that have believed in me and helped to develop me I’ll be forever thankful. In the end I’ve decided to commit to THEE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY!!!

Now that Bowen has crossed off the two most important items on that aforementioned to-do list (securing the two best o-linemen in the state), it’s time for him to turn his attention to landing one of the elite national offensive linemen that OSU is in on.
Still on the board is the No. 1 player in the country, Nixa, Missouri native
Jackson Catwell and No. 7 player in the country,
Felix Ojo. The former has not scheduled an official visit to Columbus just yet, but the latter will be on campus on May 30. If Bowen is able to get a commitment from either of these guys — or hell, why not both? — he might immediately be the most impactful position coach hire in the country this offseason.
Until that happens, enjoy highlights of Sam Greer’s junior season at Archbishop Hoban High School:
