NCAA Proposes Significant Penalties for Coaches, Programs Taking Transfers Outside Portal​

Transfer recruiting outside of the single January portal window became a significant issue this offseason.

Transfers have once again been a subject of major offseason strife in college football. The issue hit a peak in late January when Clemson coach Dabo Swinney took public aim at new Ole Miss coach Pete Golding, calling him out for tampering with linebacker Luke Ferrelli—who had recently transferred in from Cal—alleging that Golding was texting him during early morning classes asking about the buyout in his deal with Clemson. Ferrelli, who joined Clemson on Jan. 7 during the open transfer portal, transferred again to Ole Miss on Jan. 22, just under a week after the closure of the portal on Jan. 16.

“We turned everything into the NCAA,” Swinney said. “There’s tampering and then there’s blatant tampering.”

And now it appears that the NCAA is moving forward on dealing with said tampering. The NCAA Division I FBS oversight committee released a recommendation for emergency legislation to punish coaches and schools for taking transfers outside of the portal period, and the proposals are quite punitive. From the NCAA:

• The head coach would be prohibited from all football (recruiting and on-field coaching) and administrative duties (team meetings) for six contests.
• The school would be fined 20% of its football budget.
• The school would be required to reduce the number of roster spots by five for the next season, regardless of the head coach's employment status at the school.

The proposals go to a vote during a Division I cabinet meeting in April, and would go into effect immediately if passed.

“We felt this was appropriate to place an emphasis on this rule with where we are in Division I football,” said Buffalo athletic director Mark Alnutt, chair of the committee. “We have a window for student-athletes to notify their school when they would like to enter the Transfer Portal. If there is movement without going through the process as it is legislated, the committee felt there needed to be significant penalties.”

The most significant of the concepts — penalties levied on a school and head coach for accepting a transfer outside of the portal window — stands to limit any movement this spring and could spark legal challenges from players and/or schools this spring and summer who wish to switch schools or who recruit a player to their school. The NCAA moved from two portals — December and April — to a single January portal this year.

The penalties may serve as deterrents for schools that wish to enhance their rosters with players from other schools after spring practice by partaking in what is described as “blind transferring” — when a player unenrolls at one school and enrolls at another outside of the portal window. The 15-day portal window in January is meant to be the only route in which players can communicate with coaches from another school without university staff members violating the NCAA’s tampering bylaws.

Latest report from yesterday is Noel has progressed to not needing a walking boot. Obviously the expectation is he will return before the season is over.

Mobley is considered day-to-day and it is possible he returns to action today.

Iowa is favored by 7.5 currently. Projections give OSU about a 36% chance to win.

Whereas the K/9 stat reflects the quality of pitching each team has in a given week. In the current format, there are different strategies that managers currently employ. Some guys go reliever heavy in chasing saves, holds, and K/9, while others go more balanced or starting pitcher heavy in chasing wins, ERA, and WHIP.

I'd be just as likely to watch it Thanksgiving weekend (as long as it isn't noon on Saturday) as I would any other time.
I like the tradition of the Army-Navy game, but it really isn't big on my mind. Put it Thursday, and I'm probably watching the NFL games. Put it on Friday, and yeah, maybe. Saturday after The Game, and yeah, maybe. Put it any other weekend, and yeah, I might watch it.

2016 or 2018 It just came out of nowhere after a big play for us and Urban was going nuts-t.v. didn't ever figure it out but you could see the ref telling Urban what he called.

Sonny Styles doesn’t hold back on who he thinks is going to be a star for Ohio State’s defense​

The NFL Scouting Combine is taking place this week and the players mentioned are all in Indianapolis. Styles stood at the podium on Wednesday morning and he was asked who he believes is the next star defender in Columbus.

“I feel like Payton Pierce is gonna be the next guy up for us at linebacker,” Styles stated. “He’s a dawg, man. He’s physical, he’s smart, he plays fast, he plays hard. He’s got great instincts, he understands the defense, he communicates well.”

He’s just a baller. I think he’s gonna have a big year for us next year. He’s ready to take that next step and be that guy that we can rely on.”

Because my Buckeye bias didn't want him on the list tbh
But taking that away, he deserved to be on the list, but towards the bottom. And 9 is the lowest ranked NC winning QB, he just made sense to me, over the bottom 3.

So, Pryor is pretty low on the list, unless you compare his numbers to just Tressell's teams. You can see a huge jump in numbers from Tressell to Meyer, so let's not compare Pryor to those quarterbacks. Ohio State averaged 29.58 ppg from 2001 to 2010. He's right there below Smith, who we all agree belongs on the list. And 2010 was 38.77 ppg, whereas 2006 was 34.62ppg.

(Note that I took the number of points scored each year and divided by number of games. Then, to do that over multiple seasons, I just averaged the two averages, which works if the number of games for each year is the same. But it isn't. Love the breakdown. And I agree, QBs are more than just passing, BUT they are primary passers. And thats why my comment before was about TP's passing yards, but also, his overall TDs. His stats personally aren't that spectacular. And though in 2010 the ppg was 38.7, 2.3pass tds/gm as well as 2.1 rush tds/gm. So the offense was very balanced. While in 2006, less points were scored per game, there were more passing tds/gm to rushing(2.4 vs 1.9). And TP only scored 4 rushing TDs that year, so his legs weren't as dangerous scoring(though he was still second in rushing). From his actual games played, TP's stats don't jump off the screen. But again, that last year he probably would've solidified his greatness
