Browns' Watson calls fans' boos 'personal,' not based on play​

In his first home game since tearing his right Achilles tendon in October 2024, Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson was met with loud boos, a reaction he said was "disrespectful."

In four second-half drives, Watson completed 5 of 12 passes for 35 yards and one interception in the Browns' 31-7 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. The seats at Huntington Bank Field were half full, but the boos were pronounced when Watson took the field at the beginning of the second half and as he struggled.

"I think the whole world knows it has nothing to do about the performance," Watson said. "It's a little bit [more] personal than that. So, I think it's a disrespectful thing. So yeah, I mean, I'm going to keep whatever I feel with me and my family internally on how I feel about that. And yeah, just move on."

Watson has been a polarizing figure in Cleveland since the Browns traded three first-round picks to the Houston Texans in March 2022 and gave him a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract in the aftermath of more than two dozen women accusing him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage sessions.

Two Texas grand juries declined to pursue criminal charges against Watson a week before his trade to Cleveland, but he served an 11-game suspension to begin his tenure with the Browns. He also paid a $5 million fine and completed a treatment program after the NFL and the NFL Players Association reached a settlement in August 2022 on his disciplinary matter.

Since joining the Browns, Watson has failed to recapture the Pro Bowl form he showcased in Houston, posting a 33.1 Total QBR that would rank last if he had enough starts to qualify. The suspension and injuries have limited him to just 19 games.

Yeah, the Steelers aren't going to cut Rodgers or Mason, so far Allar is looking good, and they won't carry four QBs. Baring a season injury to one of those 3, he's gone. If nobody else picks him up, maybe he'll make their "practice squad".

I haven’t watched nor read anything about the team this preseason, but that is a high bar for them to get low enough to beat a season with no wins.

Yes, but the stadium will still be full, so nothing will change. Watson is already alienating fans by his reactions to being booed. Honestly, Sanders will benefit from not being the week 1 QB…the most popular person in Cleveland is the backup QB, and the least popular is the starting QB

One thing that didn't dawn on me is that Alliegro couldn't come off the field for Wisconsin because he was their entire defense. He had to be exhausted out there. He won't have to be relied upon that heavily here, which should be to his benefit.

My confidence is high on him, his only busted plays he was inches away from making the play and in the right spot. When a player isn't in the right spot to make the play at CB, that's a huge issue. If he's there and is just missing making the play, he'll usually get it fixed. Like Iggy after he had to wear oven mits for awhile.

We struggled vs the movement of IU and the ran into 2 first round DEs vs Miami. Those just weren’t the best DLs we played but they were 2 of the best.

Yeah I was pretty focused on the OL struggles at the end but then you realized IU and Miami had unbelievable defensive fronts that gave every OL in the country fits. We have a really good OL coming back as long as the two deep develops in case of injuries. I think we have a hell of a starting 5 and will have good depth as well, I'm pretty confident in the unit heading into the season. It's the main reason I would agree with putting us in the top 5 to start the season, not just Sayin and Miah like most people think.

Completely agreed, but I would actually be very surprised if he doesn't end up here. Unless LJ Sr retires before he gets here (and that's not happening in all likelihood), I see him in Columbus.

They are using the recent ‘5 years to play 5 seasons’ rule, and there are federal and state lawsuits that have been filed.

Yesterday’s ruling put a temporary stop to the federal appeals court ruling that gave some guys a 5th year.

It does NOT apply to the guys who used state courts in their appeals for a 5th year.

It‘s a mess.
