Cyclosporiasis outbreak possibly traced to lettuce from Mexico used by Taco Bell, source says​

A lettuce supplier to fast-food giant Taco Bell is being investigated as a possible source for a nationwide cyclosporiasis outbreak that has sickened thousands of people, a source familiar with the investigation told CBS News on Thursday.

The source said a traceback investigation by the Food and Drug Administration identified a single supplier of iceberg lettuce from Mexico, Taylor Farms, that was used by Taco Bell locations in five states where people who contracted cyclosporiasis ate. The FDA is investigating, the source said.

Taylor Farms, based in Salinas, California, is a supplier to several major restaurant chains across the U.S.

"Based on ongoing conversations with public health officials, and out of an abundance of caution, Taco Bell has taken immediate action to voluntarily remove potentially impacted lettuce from a supplier in select states," Taco Bell said in a statement Thursday. "The affected ingredient from our supplier is being indefinitely removed from our supply chain nationwide and will be replaced within 24 hours in select states."

CBS News has reached out to Taylor Farms for comment as well.

The outbreak, a diarrheal illness caused by the parasite cyclospora, was first reported in early May and has since spread to 34 states, according to the latest numbers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It has sickened at least 1,645 people, per CDC data, including at least 141 hospitalizations. But the CDC's tally lags behind state health departments, which have reported much larger numbers of cases. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported Thursday at least 4,312 confirmed cases, including 102 that required hospitalization.

YOUNG BUCKS. Ohio State will enter the 2026 season as one of the youngest teams in college football.

RotoWire’s Thomas Leary shared an interactive widget this week that allows college football fans to sort teams based on their average roster age. Across all 138 FBS programs, the average roster is just over 20.3 years old, with UTSA owning the oldest roster (21.02 years) and Georgia the youngest (19.81 years).

Ohio State ranks No. 128 nationally with an average roster age of 19.95 years old. The Buckeyes’ roster ranks 63rd out of 67 Power Four teams and 17th out of 18 Big Ten programs.

Ohio State’s status as one of college football’s youngest teams isn’t necessarily surprising. The Buckeyes had 25 players selected in the 2025 and 2026 NFL drafts and lost 31 scholarship players to the transfer portal this offseason, while they added 28 scholarship freshmen.

Ryan Day and his staff did well to raise the roster’s average age with 18 transfer additions, including 16 players who will be entering their fourth season or later in 2026.

Even with that influx of veterans, Ohio State remains one of the youngest teams in the country — which could be cause for concern until you remember the Buckeyes have experience where it matters most: at quarterback and in the trenches. Julian Sayin has already made 14 career starts, while Ohio State’s offensive line features more than 125 combined career appearances.

I am not a lawyer and have never seen an actual LOI agreement for college football but they are not the same thing as an employment agreement in the real world.

LOI in CFB means I agree to come play football for you in return for a scholarship. It binds both sides to do whatever is in the agreement. That’s why guys have to be”released” from them.

As @Trevi said above, and I mentioned in one of my anti common sense posts, these have been 1 year deals between player and school for the majority of CFB history. It was just the other way around so now that the schools and their lobby are trying to do what’s best for the sport-they don’t mention that so much.

This is the modern coal mine owners working together to buy politicians and control the cost of labor so they can keep control of the tv money. They know that only 20-30 teams are big enough brands to survive in a world of year to year free agent bidding wars and that even then , those teams cannot carry the expense of the 30 some odd teams at the university that don’t make money.

This is the fight for how it’s going to go forward. Old owners find a way to still control it or it totally blows up and changes (imo).

Legend is an early favorite for the Newcomer of the Year Herbie. He was developed at Tennessee into the player he is today, before transferring to Ohio State. Tennessee plays in the SEC, where it just means more. So in the end, this is really similar to the Caleb Downs and Justin Fields situations.

My favorite play from 2024 was bringing Jeremiah in motion like he was going to take a toss sweep, dragging the defense with him which left the space he'd left wide open, and having him shift back, take a pass, and waltz in. I'm sure there's a designation for that play that's above my pay grade, but my point is that we could, assuming that Legend is as advertised, set that play up earlier in the year by running him, as I'm sure we will, on jet sweeps.

I believe at one time in the not too distant past the schools only admitted to one year at a time to the athletic scholarship. The BIG 10 committed to all four year scholarships in 2014. The remaining Power 5 conferences followed that in around 2015. As I recall, Nick for one was pretty infamous for not renewing scholarships to players that were not performing up to expectations.

Point to the recruiting class he’s in, point to the current players on the team. Ohio State invests across its roster to compete for national championships. Tennessee sells out for a handful of players each year and crosses their fingers that will be enough as they hope for the best with the rest of their roster.

Would it be negative recruiting to point to the strength and conditioning results in college and projecting through to the NFL? Ohio Stater literally has more than twice as many players in the NFL right now (80-39).

Would it be negative recruiting to point out that Tennessee’s head coach will likely get fired with another year or two of highly likely mediocre results?

Outside of the money in question, choosing Ohio State is the easiest decision in the world. Can Tennessee throw enough money at the family to make them look past everything else? I guess we’ll see.

Also, interesting timing on this announcement considering that an Adidas deal at Tennessee is reportedly a big part of the financial discussion.

It makes zero difference what the NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL or whoever else do. They have the employee/employer structure, unions and a CBA. College football does not. The players are just individual contributors, like coal miner, that get to choose which mine they work for and are free to change mines as often as they please if the money is better at another mine.

Don't have any problem with the projection, but cannot really see three Buckeyes splitting votes, with one of them being Heisman winner. Most teams bemoan having two players in the running, let alone three. Don't get me wrong, would love to see it, but the law of large numbers kinda implies that won't happen. Especially with last year Heisman finalist, and the 'best player' in college football. That's pretty tall cotton....

It's called 'lack of water'. Back then, plenty of snow, which was stored in the Sierra Mountains. When warm weather came, snows melted and ergo the rivers ran high. Able to be stored, and used.
