tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I wouldn't call it playing checkers. Tressel racked up a ton of wins and some NC appearances mining just Ohio and the surrounding area.

He certainly did, and one of those appearances he was blown out of the water by our current coach who recruited nationally.
I get your point, but I'm just making the point that Urban's national tactic will lead to more waiting than if we offered and went after local kids.

We got blown out because most of the team entered the game thinking they had won already (especially the OL), and for the first and only time I've ever seen Tressel panic. The overall talent on both sidelines was pretty much equal.

True.
My point is that such a big deal shouldn't be made over Franklin . Hes done an admirable job but hes done it recruiting the same areas PSU has always targeted. Urban is going after parts of the country that are very new. And will take time building relationships and getting commitments.

I'm a little worried at where we are now, simply because recruits help recruiting. But I think this class will be smaller than the last few, so we are being more selective. I also think Meyer finally has the team that he wants here at OSU, and is not shifting effort from recruiting the 2015 class to getting the 2014 season. Where I feel that the last 2 years more effort was put into recruiting, knowing he didn't have the team he needed to win it all. Press the team, get the X's and O's perfected and let the W's and a crystal football make up for the recruiting.

I don't think Urban is ever done recruiting and is probably a little disappointed by some players we've missed out on but is constantly sending out offers around the country. Idk if he ever rests and always is looking to the future to see how he can replace players. It's hard to say he has the team he wants, when were still quite an inexperienced teAm besides the QB and possibly D line. And Urban always recruits to replace current players. We're still looking good for players like:
Torrance Gibson
Damien Harris
Mike Weber
Rick Deberry
Jerome Baker
Justin Hilliard
DreMont Jones
Elijah Taylor
Van Jefferson
Etc etc
It's not even the summer, camps will be big in recruiting. The actual season will be big, as will the HS football season when under the radar kids become rated higher. It's funny how early it is right now. Our class is hardly conceded, and not close to being done. Still will finish in the top 5

I'm certainly not worried, just a little disappointed a few misses so far. Wimbush was the biggest one, Chris Clark (deciding soon, looking like scUM), Meggison to some extent, Edwards decommitting, Fitzpatrick, and Gonzalez (looked like he was in the bag and committed to PSU out of nowhere). Crawford to some extent as well, but I feel we will keep pressing. It is just that we were in on most of those guys early, were looking good, and put a ton of effort in, only to whiff on them all. I know it is only May but the way that the recruiting world has evolved, getting involved with a kid the summer of their senior year is often seen as getting in late, especially when they've already developed relationships with other staffs and had offers on the table for awhile.

As mentioned earlier, we just need someone to step up to commit and lead this class...right now it is stagnant. I am really hoping Gibson visits early in the summer and pulls the trigger to get this class started.

Agreed to an extent. There are still kids that would jump to the moon or at least deeply consider choosing OSU regardless of when offered. The combination of OSU's history/tradition combined with Urban's name recognition back to his UF days, is very intriguing to many prospects. Not to mention many recruits now grew up watching Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin win NCs when this class was playing peewee football. The 2015 class was in pre school when OSU won the NC in 2002. I'm sure in the next few months well see this class grow quite a bit and there will be another lull into the season ends and then another push close to NSD.

I believe we'll get a little boost from the NFL Draft and kids will see Buckeyes getting picked. I bet we get a couple of commits within days.

It simply amazes me what things fans think affects a recruits decision.

It's not just the fans belief, the staff have been tweeting draft numbers the last three days.
I hate to agree with Taosman, but most of these recruits want to end up in the NFL some day, so a school's ability to produce NFL talent should be a major factor in a recruit's college choice. I don't think it's any coincidence that Alabama has been producing loads of NFL talent and then signing top recruiting classes to replace the kids who get drafted.

It's hard to argue that a school's track record putting kids into the NFL would not influence a lot of kids. It is much more debatable whether, as Taosman is suggesting, one successful draft would influence several kids into committing shortly thereafter.
