QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

NOT starting the Texas game will be JT's punishment to TS.

That being said, JT impresses me as the type of Coach who prefers to have on the field a QB who is "Least Likely To Fuck-up" over a QB who is "Most Likely To Succeed."

I like Mili's "rumor." TB just might be the guy for the entire season.

Well, in response to that, JT also likes proven commodities at QB and most of all, guys who have beaten Michigan. So, it's very difficult to speculate on who Tressel plays based solely on his vast range of preferences.

More than "proven commodities" and "guys who have beaten Michigan", he wants trusted leadership under center. Smith has violated that trust not once but twice since the Michigan game. He had better hope that Boeckman doesn't light Texas up lest he not see the field that night.

I'm with you Cleve... I don't necessarily put it past tressel to make him sit for one drive (during which I doubt we see aggressive playcalling)...

But I don't see him being kept out of the game very long the more I think about it.

Troy misses one class, and all of a sudden Boeckman is the savior, and Smith will be lucky to get off the sidelines... color me skeptical.

Maybe you haven't been paying attention to what's been going on. First, Smith didn't "just miss one class". He purposely skipped a class to go to a camp without getting the required permission from either the head coach or athletic director...this is not his first fuck up, and Tressel is not happy at all. Second, no one is saying Boeckman is the savior. However, there have been than a few reports that he was the better of the three QBs throughout spring practice...there also was discussion among the staff last season about taking off his redshirt, but they decided against it. If Boeckman plays very well, I doubt Smith gets in the game, and if TB really shines, Smith may find his status as non-starter indefinitely extended.

Well, first of all, I think the talk of Boeckman being the best QB in spring practice is the standard love for the backup QB. Nobody I've talked to that observed the practices has said TB is remarkably better than TS or JZ. He's very good, but he's still got a long way to go. And JT is not one to bench his experienced QB's for one that has never thrown a college snap since he's been at OSU.

When Krenzel F-ed up and accepted that job signing autographs in Dayton, resulting in a temporary loss of eligibility, did Tress bench him?

Boeckman's been with the team and coaches long enough that Coach would put him in there, if he felt that he was ready for it. Also, it's not like TB would be going into the Texas game with zero game experience. Grant it. Miami is not Texas, but our players haven't played a team the calibur of Texas since they played Iowa last year, and we know how well our "proven" QB's did against them. IF TB starts against Miami, and does well. Then he should start against Texas, and not get pulled after , what some of you think, will be a token punishment for Troy.

I think the evidence supports Mili.

Tressel is a person of very strong personal values and ethics. Trust is a very important commodity. Smith knew very well that what he was doing was wrong when he accepted money from a booster. It appears that Tressel took his youth, inexperience, and apology into account and forgave him.

Trust is an overall expectation that a person is going to behave in a predictable manner that is in accordance with expectations. It can be restored in time and it looked like that was exactly what was happening until this most recent episode.

What has occurred is not a major NCAA infraction and the sky has not fallen as a result. However, Tressel is not one to talk to players through the media and his comments to the press suggest that this episode has caused serious damage to Smith's relationship with Tressel.

We can say all we like about his charitable intent, but it is clear that Smith wanted to have that experience with an highly respected NFL quarterback and that he was willing to break rules, of which he was well aware from the earlier incident, in order to get what he wanted, even if it hurt his team. This will not be lost on Tressel.

If Tressel expects leadership through example, then what does he encourage in the team by forgiving and forgetting again? Especially if Boeckman was the best quarterback in Spring practice? Especially if he was supposed to start at the bottom of the pile this year anyway because of the first infraction? Is he willing to expose himself and his team to another episode at some critical point in the run-up to a national championship?

Unless, Smith should totally outshine Boeckman and Zwick in fall practice, I suspect that he will not start against Texas. If one of the other quarterbacks is doing well, I suspect he may not even play.

Uhhhh Mili.... Two? Name two things he has done wrong since the Michigan game. I can only think of one and that was a pretty petty infraction. If you are talking about him taking money from the booster, well that happened in the spring of '04. Well before the Michigan game, or even the season for that matter. We only found out about it after the Michigan game.

[sarcasm]Really?! That would be great![/sarcasm]

Mili just makes it sound like TS has been a habitual offender over the course of 8 months which is completely false. No one even knows if the class TS missed was just a review or if he had plans to make up the missing assignments if there were any. Well no one but TS, the teacher and JT.

I haven't read all the TS threads and this whole debate eitehr, but lets not forget Troy wasn't skipping class to go get high and drive fast. Troy skipped class to help out Steve McNair and his Charity camp.

I skipped classes for a shitload of worse reasons (including getting high and driving fast) On the other hand, I wasn't on a free ride scholly, so....

You may not have been on a full-ride, but Steve Bellisari was, and he missed all of nine quarters for a DUI. Say what you want about multiple offenses, blah blah blah... I will be very pissed off if Troy Smith receives a greater punishment than Steve Bellisari. No matter how much people want to vastly overstate what this latest episode says about Smith's character, there is no way that anything he has done so far is as grave as what Bellisari did. Last time I checked, people weren't getting killed because somebody skipped class to go to a football camp. I certainly hope Coach Tressel has a more healthy perspective on this than Joe Messageboard.
