QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

I can't say I disagree with ya jlb (Or should I say, the artist formally known as meatwad)

If TB is better than TS and JZ, I say give him the ball. If he's not, I say give the ball to the best one. And I'm sure that no matter how pissed anyone is at Smith for being the catalyst who got OSU back in the news (in an unfavorable light) when he scores 6, you'll be just as happy as if it never happend.

Smith's problem in all this is one of timing, not the act itself.

Uhhhh Mili.... Two? Name two things he has done wrong since the Michigan game. I can only think of one and that was a pretty petty infraction. If you are talking about him taking money from the booster, well that happened in the spring of '04. Well before the Michigan game, or even the season for that matter. We only found out about it after the Michigan game.

It's funny how Smith's biggest fans will rally to his defense and trivialize his actions. Well, those actions were significant enough to:

1.) Cause the OSU administration to drain resources for over a month to make sure his boneheaded decision wasn't an NCAA violation.

2.) Bring yet more negative press to the program.

3.) Have JT say publicly that there will be "consequences".

You may think it's petty, but with him still in the fringes of the spotlight, it was not.

I honestly do NOT understand the different factions on this. I mean, very few people appear to be in the middle. Troy is either so good that his off-field actions don't really matter, or his off-field actions are so horrific that he should be kicked off the team. Come on, everybody, let's get some perspective. In all honesty, Troy did NOT do anything that was all that bad...if you want to say he fucked up, fine, he fucked up. But the past is behind us (insofar as the booster payment is concerned), and this latest fuck up is, in all reality, small potatoes when compared to any of the other 18 incidents we've had over the last three years. Knowing Jim Tressel the way we do, we know that Troy's punishment for the booster payment has either already been meted out, or at least has already been decided, and that means Tressel will consider only this latest "infraction" when determining any additional punishment for Troy. Let's all back off the Prozac, and cheer for our Buckeyes, whoever may be at the helm. Be it Zwick, Boeckman, or Smith, I will still be hoarse as fuck after the Texas game (well, all of the games, for that matter), and I swear I will bitch-slap anyone I hear booing any OSU player.

"If all things were equal and all things balanced off and once we get through the spring and the 29 practices, and once we get through the first game, chances are he (Smith) would start based on what has happened last year," said Daniels.

According to Daniels, the OSU coaching staff is taking the approach that no disciplinary action beyond the NCAA sanctions is necessary for Smith, and since he did not really lose his position on the field, he should be able to reclaim it, much like a player coming back from an injury who has missed some games.

"What he did was wrong, but as a football player, as a player playing, he didn't do anything wrong. That's how I look at it," said Daniels.

"We just don't have him because of this situation, kind of like he was injured and couldn't play," Daniels said.

Now the only thing that has changed since these quotes is that Smith skipped a review session. Does that act, which was okay in the NCAA's and in the law's eyes, merit Smith to miss starting the Texas game, and possibly ride the pine for the entire game? We'll see, but my guess is No.

And as I am going to be so far away, please feel free to deliver one for me.

Let's all just be clear that Mili hasn't said that he wants Smith to sit forever. Rather, he is calling attention to the lapses of judgement that indicate leadership issues at a time when Ohio State needs leadership on and off the field.

Mili says that, if reports are true that Smith was not the best quarterback in spring training, this latest episode suggests that Smith has opened the door for Boeckman and Zwick. I don't see the argument with that, given Tressel's comments to the press about "consequences".

Mili goes on to say that, if Boeckman lights up Texas, then Smith may not get in the game. If one of these three quarterbacks is lighting up Texas, why would Tressel feel compelled to put anyone else in? And if he's not, why wouldn't he feel that he should try the others?

So, I think we all agree more than this thread indicates. And FKA highlights the central point of our agreement. Whoever quarterbacks the team is our quarterback and he deserves our support when he is leading our team.

I think the key is just how good Boeckman is... both of our best QBs were shaky out in that weather whereas Boeckman looked solid.

Youboty and some other defenders were all quoted on how silly Boeckman made them look at times with his passes.

Both Smith and Zwick still struggle missing open guys. Smith looked incredible against UM, and I think he can continue to improve, but in the spring TS apparently only throws one speed: hard. And we all know about Zwick's confidence issues under bad circumstances, and his non-spirals.

That suggests to me that we have two experienced QBs who have some flaws in their passing ability. Boeckman might not have quite as big of a cannon as both, or the escapability of Smith, but Tressel has never needed a QB like that. Heck, Tressel had a meager passing attack in 02 (especially when you factor in Craig's throws).

If you line up Holmes, Ginn, Gonzalez with Hall (or Hamby) and Pittman (or Haw/Wells) in the backfield... you just need a guy who can get it to those playmakers.

If Boeckman could pick apart our solid pass coverage with the scout team receivers, its not that big of a stretch to imagine what he could do with the best WRs.

All of this is conjecture... and part of me will never give up on Troy until I see him come down from Cloud 11/20/2004. But it seems very reasonable that Boeckman could take our passing game to another level that escaped us for the first 10 games of the season.

TB would have to be significantly better than JZ in fall camp to earn the starting assignment for the Miami game. I have no doubt that TB will see much playing time in the Miami game, just that JT would need to see TB performing heads and shoulders above JZ to start him over JZ. As for the Texas game, I think that performance in the Miami game by JZ and TB will go a long ways in deciding who starts that game.

We didn't have a passing game because we didn't have a running game. It was the speed of Ginn and Smith that opened things up and made the offense viable. Boeckman may be a great pocket passer but if our OL and RBs don't make the D respect the run he will struggle. I think that will happen and it will only benefit the QB whoever it may be.

I got a nickle that says JT starts TGII (of course, it's just a nickle and it shouldn't be talking to me.)
That's worth 50-1 as a vbet on the Texas game (Anybody besides JZ, TS, or TB). I know Mili has placed all his vCash on this since he's convinced that Teddy is going to play QB for the entire season. :tongue2:
