QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

I think he's been better than people give him credit for but he's absolutely regressed in terms of poise and ball protection.

The groundings are whatever to me. They really haven't affected anything. The ball is basically just going back to the spot where he would've been sacked anyway so all he's really doing is preventing a fumble.

I think he's been hurt for a while and that's why he's been panicky and throwing off of his back foot.

Two Buckeyes were named candidates for national awards on Tuesday.

Ohio State cornerback Denzel Burke was named as one of 15 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, which honors college football’s best defensive back. Quarterback Kyle McCord is one of 35 players on the Davey O’Brien Award’s “Class of 2023,” making him an official candidate to win the award given to college football’s top quarterback.

McCord makes the list of Davey O’Brien candidates after starting all eight of Ohio State’s games so far this season at quarterback and completing 148 of his 231 passing attempts (64.1%) for 2,163 yards and 14 touchdowns with three interceptions. The first-year starter currently ranks 10th in the nation in passing yards per attempt (9.4) and 20th in quarterback rating (160.1), but he’ll need to elevate his play over the next couple of weeks to remain in contention for the O’Brien Award. The current 35-player list of candidates will be pared down to 16 semifinalists on Nov. 14.
Troy Smith (2006) is Ohio State’s only previous winner of the Davey O’Brien Award.

Three finalists for both awards will be named on Nov. 28 while the winners of both awards will be announced during ESPN’s College Football Awards on Dec. 8.

I think it’s safe to say that McCord is a game manager. And that’s not a knock,I just don’t know of many games where he’ll be the reason that OSU wins. The defense, MHjr, the RBs and then McCord would be the reasons for most of the OSU Ws this year. And there’s nothing wrong with that as long as the team knows they’re realistic Roles on the team. Stetson Bennett just won 2 straight NCs, and he wasn’t the biggest factor in most of the games. But he had a few games where he lit it up, and I think McCord can do the same in certain games. As long as he can limit his mistakes, the sky’s the limit for this team

I agree that his pocket presence needs to improve. He needs a better internal timer to know when to break the pocket.

He has improved in ball placement through the year. Is it CJ Stroud or Justin Fields level? No. Will it be good enough for the remaining games? I don't know.

Honestly they simply look more dominant. I don't know if scUM is actually elite but they they've looked much better against bad competition than we have. OSU conversely, is not pummeling teams they have more talent than. Not to mention I don't think they're the best matchup for the Bucks stylistically.

I'll have a better gauge for The Game after scUM and the pedsters finish up but as of now, I absolutely stand by my original statement.

Theyve been destroying the spread since cheating.
Maybe they win all those games anyway, but the "dominant" part is proven to be a result of cheating.
It's easy to turn a 24 - 14 game into 42 - 7 when you know what the play is

There is that and the fact that they haven't played a ranked opponent all year...highest ranked team going by CBS was #38 Rutgers and that was their lowest margin of victory. Their SOS is at best bottom 1/3 of the NCAA. Until they play PSU next week, I don't think anyone knows what ttun really has this year with the aforementioned cheating and atrocious schedule. They follow up with Maryland after PSU, so really their "gauntlet" comes in the last 3 games.

As to McCord and any comparison to JJ, he has had to face two top 10 defenses in ND and PSU, plus Wisconsin and Maryland are both top 40. Ttun has faced only one defense in the top 40 (Minnesota at #33) and the rest are outside the top 50. After this week, we will see how JJ and their offense do against good defenses for the rest of the season.

As said above, just limit mistakes and distribute the ball...and be better at not panicking early in the pocket (which comes with experience). We've got 3 more games for McCord to make that improvement and that's plenty of time considering it's only the last couple games his performance dipped. One big question though is if he is even close to 100% healthy? Sure didn't look it in the second half of Saturday's game.

Agreed. Hopefully Kyle goes into The Game prepared and tested.

JJ on the other hand will be heading The Game whilst sucking his own dick .....

And shortly after that 18th straight completion, many in the Game Thread were calling for him to be benched.

18 straight is the new record? Most of us will remember the 17 straight passes that a certain QB, considered to be inaccurate by many, tossed in a glorious late game comeback against a team that’s not a rival, and not elite.
