‘It was just cool to see everybody win’: Kyle McCord reflects on Ohio State’s national title, transfer to Syracuse
Kyle McCord watched Ohio State’s national championship run, proud that it happened even if he chose not to be part of it.
While most of his fellow former members of the Buckeyes’ 2021 class were bus reloading the roster following a disappointing 2023 season, McCord was pressing the reset button on his career. He wasn’t thinking that following a 30-23 loss to Michigan, he wouldn’t be back to write a better ending in 2024. But things can change quickly in college football, which is why seven days after that game ended, McCord was in the transfer portal.
“It wasn’t easy,” McCord said. “When you pour three years of blood, sweat and tears into a program and you create a lot of great relationships there with players and the coaching staff and the support staff. It wasn’t an easy decision to leave. But it worked out for me (and) it worked out for them. I think all around it was the right thing to do.”
The decision ended up benefitting everyone. McCord landed at Syracuse, throwing for 4,779 yards — leading the nation — and 34 touchdowns while leading the Orangemen to their first 10-win season since 2018 in their first year under Fran Brown. OSU brought in Will Howard and went on to win a national title. People in the program rooted for his success and he rooted for theirs.,
“It was awesome,” McCord said. “Those are my guys, so seeing them accomplish that goal was sweet knowing how badly they worked for it. Like I said, I had a great year, (and) they had a great year. It was just cool to see everybody win.”....
But it wasn’t supposed to end that way.
McCord invested a ton of time into Ryan Day’s Ohio State football program. The only player who’s got a longer history than him is Jack Sawyer. Both committed within the first four months of Day’s tenure and were responsible for building up his first recruiting class. Things weren’t supposed to end in a divorce.
Even if both sides are adamant that there are no hard feelings — at least publicly — with how things ended. This wasn’t supposed to turn into a situation where Brown is thanking Day in press conferences for letting McCord leave or McCord making slick comments when OSU’s losing streak in The Game gets to four.
This was supposed to end with a national championship with McCord leading the way. But only one of those things happened. But how?
“After we lost to Michigan, it wasn’t on my radar at all,” McCord said. “It kind of transpired pretty quickly over that conference championship weekend. I know most guys get in the portal and know where they’re going, but that wasn’t the case with me. I had literally no clue. I put my name in the portal at midnight and Coach Fran was sitting in my living room the next day.
“The turnaround was pretty quick. I call it high school recruiting on steroids because you have to make your decision in a week or so. It was definitely a wild ride.”
