QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

FWIW, Rutgers implemented the same strategy against CJ in '22, where they kept safeties back to prevent big pass plays and dared the Buckeyes to run. According to the announcers, the fumblerooski by Rutgers was the first play over 40 yards allowed by both defenses in the season.

Kyle kinda had a better game statistically than CJ did against an improved Rutgers team, on the road, with a less dominant O-line & run game (I knew Henderson was terrific on Saturday, but Miyan ran for 189 yards on 9 YPC and 5 TDs against Rutgers in '22):

QB C/ATT YDS AVG TD INT QBR
CJ '22 13/22 154 7.0 2 1 78.7
Kyle '23 19/26 189 7.3 3 1 79.8

Very telling stats. Thanks for sharing!

Need to post that one in the game thread every week before the kickoff so everyone can take a deep breath and then go

Really great stuff, keep it coming. Seriously that is a great breakdown. I'm trying to keep perspective on Kyle, Stroud gets doted on because of his late season performances and Stroud was excellent without a doubt, but everyone is quick to forget the struggles he had before that point. There is also the eye test beyond the stat sheet and the more I go back and look at it so far, it is seems like a wash. Kyle will throw an errant or ill-advised pass that should be borderline routine with good pass protection, but then the next throw will be on the money and the receiver doesn't do their job in some form or another. Kyle is doing a good, yet not elite job this year...tbh that is all we need in '23 with the rest of the team and also why I am not down on Kyle so far.

The one thing I will say has kept me optimistic is that it seems the pieces are there on offense to shake whatever might not be working on offense and the defense can back them up. McCord has more leash to work with than Stroud or Fields because of the defense...that leash is not infinite, but it is nice to have. I keep comparing this team to the '02 championship team, I see McCord as a modern-day Krenzel paired with this defense (modern-day because the offensive stats are so much higher now). He does what is needed to win games, I will take it.
...and this does not take into account the quality of defenses they have faced. I'm expecting PSU to bring McCarthy down to earth this week.
Excellent point, JJ has played garbage defenses mostly...if he puts up similar stats against PSU than he has heading into that game, I will be shocked. I would expect a net-neutral at QB when we head into AA...best defense will win that game imo.

Wasn't it the Rutgers game where morons started venmo'ing money to CJ just to insult him?
