The NFL is littered with mid. Perpetually horrible takes and talent evaluators, which allows things like McCord to potentially slink through a decade of backup. I can GM's saying thinking he is over 6'2 and has a strong arm. He looks like a NFL QB, so he must be good.

Probably not the case, but it makes you wonder if GM's keep these type of backup QB's around, just to keep the optics good on paying the starter the type of money they are receiving.

How many times does a starter go out, and a QB nobody has heard about go in, only for there to be a futile output of non existent offense on the field?

It happens all the time.

I have thought for years that most NFL backup QB’s are like long relievers in MLB. They are only in the game because something happened, you are essentially conceding defeat and just trying to put a passable product on the field until the game is over. Maybe you’ll get lucky if they can keep it close but mostly it’s to look like a league compliant team while you are quitting on that game.

That’s why I like Jamies Winston at this point in his career. That goofy fuck is coming off the bench and slinging it. He may make it a lot worse but he may go on a heater and win a game for you when 90% of backups cannot.

Agreed.... it does seem like that. It also seems like first round busts float around as starters for a few seasons, then kind of disappear, even though their best utility would be a no name back up. I guess they already got theirs but still kind of a bust.

Yeah. No idea why but it does seem like they don’t ever get the chance to just be a no name backup.

My only guess is that NFL teams take these gambles on the tools and when it’s clear it won’t work, they rather have polished mid as a backup so there is no learning curve and no pressure on the #1 ?

Who knows? I have long since stopped trying to think along with NFL GMs.
