2013 tOSU Defense Discussion

My take is spence has missed out on about3-5 sacks due to not wrapping up or not coming in control. He's been getting held time after time and to be honest I'm not sure anymore if spence ever does get outrageous numbers. What spence does though is frees up the other 3 defensive lineman to create havoc. Which is why we see guys like bennett, bosa, and Marcus making plays.

Next year though Washington will be a defensive tackle. Unless he loses some weight and gains some more speed there is no way you can take bosa or spence off the edges in place of Washington.

Next years line bosa, Washington, bennet, spence.

I think spence should definitely put up better sack numbers, held or not. Hes a speed outside rusher, that's his job. I see strongside des as guys that take up double teams and free up guys. Spence should be getting the qb down more. He just needs to focus and keep doimg what he's doing. He gets to the qb, and barely misses multiple times a game. Hes talented, but very few are at clowneys level this early into their careers. Hes still only a true sophomore. Needs more consistency and reps. I do like your line prediction for next year though. A rotation with schutt, hill, marcus, miller, carter, sprinkle and possibly lewis could be special as well.

Spence is putting up better numbers than Clowney this year and is about on pace with Clowney's sack numbers from last year.

I doubt spence has garnered the same amount of attention as clowney from opposing d coordinators, so yes I'm sure he's putting up better numbers and he also has played one more game than him as well. I wouldn't compare the 2, clowney had 21 sacks in his first 2yrs of college without redshirting. Spence is not close to that. But its awesome that we don't have to rely on ome guy to be that focal point of our line. Bennett has been a monster and Washington and marcus have also been stepping up. Its still a very young line, but most of us realized that coming into this year. There would be growing pains the first part of the season until the line could settle down and get used to the speed of the game as a starter

What do you guys think about how we coach on defense and what it means going forward?

The way our secondary plays does not match the way the backers or lineman play. We aggressively attack with our front 7 and yet we play 10 yards off the ball in the back end.

I just don't get how urban wants a defense that takes the fight to the opponent yet our secondary doesn't reflect that at all. I personally feel its going to boil down to a coaching change to get this defense back to elite status.

I mean with the defensive line last year and this year it shouldn't be this easy to throw the ball on our defense.

I've said before urban shouldn't have to sit in on the defensive meetings or focus on defense for extended periods. If my boss shows up to watch over me for extended periods then I know I'm not cutting it.

Unless I'm missing something the Def strategy is based upon Fickell & Withers as they are the CO-DCs.. and the way its played out on the field.. Fickell, aggressive punch someone in the face, and Withers, sit back and dont let anyone behind you... I've said it before. I feel this will be the last year of "Co-DCs".

I hope so. Its like there's a conflict of preference between the two and fickell doesn't want the animosity by calling it out.

I remember withers saying he only cares about the score and doesn't give a shit about how many yards we give up. Well he should care and he should be pissed off because despite his efforts to not give up the big play we sure as fuck give up a lot of big plays.

I am sure this has been addressed on here but i have not been keeping up on this post. It seemed like when we use press coverage good things happen such as the interception at Northwestern. It would also stop the receivers from being able to hook in and get 8 yards all day. It would require much more work and cannot be all game long but i wold like to see it more often.

On clear pass rushing downs I would love to see a steady diet of:

Spence, Bennett, Bosa, Washington and Marcus

IMHO I FIFY. In the spirit of putting the "best 11" on the field I don't know how we can't have 5 D lineman at all times, 4 at the very least. If there is an offensive line in the BIG that can handle those 5 in particular I'd have to see it to believe it.

If Spence develops a spin move, he'll start to dominate. He is extremely fast but the same move over and over again allows the OT to step back and hook him which is really holding but the refs aren't calling it even 25% of the time he is held.

Do we not have the type players to fit the schemes we want to run defensively or is it that we are unable to teach/adapt our schemes around the talent we do have? (If we answer this the chicken and the egg need a little advice as well.)
