2013 tOSU Defense Discussion

Meyer addressed the pass defense as the #1 concern. He said missed tackles/assignments were responsible for the two long pass plays. He also said it wasn't about the scheme, it was about making plays. Not sure if he was only referring to those 2 plays but our schemes were drastically different from half to half. We blitzed and were a lot more aggressive in the second half. Our rush 3 and terrible soft zone pass defense gets torched a lot. Our biggest problem is our lack of play calling aggressiveness.

Around The Conference

-Ohio State heads into the bye week with the nation’s No. 2 ranked recruiting class. Of the 18 commits, 15 hold at least a four-star grade either by 247Sports or the 247Composite.

-Ohio State has four of the top five ranked recruiters in the Big Ten, led by Mike Vrabel and Ed Warinner in the top two spots, with Kerry Coombs and Luke Fickell running No. 4 and No. 5. Wisconsin’s Ben Stricklandis holding the No. 3 spot.

I can't begin to say just how much I love having a guy like Vrabel on our side. Urban becoming our coach was incredible, Urban keeping Mike on board was pure evil genius.

Here's a great explanation of Roby's coverage of Abbrederis in the Wisconsin game. It breaks down the coverage he had on him and which plays were more successful. Press coverage is way better than playing off.

I want to agree with that but the idea of a WR going 80yds with one little slip by the CB is too scary. So, why didn't we play more "press" against Northwestern? I think it could be because of the slippery turf. On artificial turf I'll take Robey and Grant pressing with this defensive line going after the QB. And Curtis Grant is still lost in pass coverage. But C. Grant's run stuffing play is very good as the play before the 4th down stand at Northwestern shows. That was a very important play.

I like the comment and I know a corner can slip in press coverage but they could also slip in off coverage as well or give up 5 to 10 yards on any given play. Heck we were even playing off on the quick slant where roby had to chase down the receiver and make a tackle. It is a risk and reward system but honestly the rewards outweigh the risk. Rewards are more sacks, more 3 and outs, pass break-ups, more int's, and less yardage against. Risks are rare big plays due to slip or missed tackle, QB gets away from rush and gets more rush yards and a big play on an undiagnosed screen play. But honestly I see the blitz accompanied with press coverage really helping the pass defense. I wouldn't complain about it if I saw it more often or if we tried it a lot in game and it just didn't work.
