2013 tOSU Defense Discussion

Against some VERY average teams. Outside of Wisky we haven't faced a very tough running team. And against Wisky we sold out to stop the run so much that we got burned through the air. Great teams will hit us on the ground and through the air. We are not elite because of how vulnerable we are on D.

Yeah but that same argument can be used on just about any team. If were using that argument, then Alabama shouldn't be considered elite since their offense hasn't faced a top 20 defense (nor will they) outside of Virginia Tech (equivelent to our Wisky rushing attack).

You play the games you have to play and you play them well. The Bucks can't control how good other teams rushing attacks are, just as Alabama can't control how good other defenses are that their offense must match up against.

Why just Fickell? What about Withers?

Withers, Coombs, Fickell, anyone coaching defense not named Vrabel is open to question imo.

There are no more secrets about this defense for the rest of the B1G anymore. The LB's can't cover anyone so find ways to exploit it. PSU, IU and to a degree even scUM have the ability to do some exploiting.

Not sure if posted, saw this online:

Q. You seemed to mix it up, against Northwestern, you played some soft coverage but Grant had his game‑changing interception, so how often do you guys feel like you mix up your coverage within a game?
COACH WITHERS: Well, I mean, you'd like to be able to say you can press guys the whole game. I mean, you'd like to. To be honest with you, if you were playing 65 snaps a game back like you did in 1995, you're playing almost 80 snaps average a game and those guys start doing this in man coverage a lot. So you'd like to be able to press them every snap. If I had my druthers, we'd walk up and press every snap. But you can't. That's not realistic. And some of the coverages don't allow you to do that anyway.
But yeah, that was a game changing play because we were in press and they weren't expecting us to be in press and threw the ball out there. So, yeah, you'd like to be able to do it a lot.

Q. With that in mind, do you think y'all are a good press coverage team when you look at it? Is that when y'all are at your best?
COACH WITHERS: Here is the thing about press coverage. Press coverage to me eliminates a lot of different routes that you have to cover. You know, you've got to cover the go, and probably a hitch or a slant. You know, they don't run comebacks. They don't run a lot of digs. They don't run a lot of stuff because they don't have that in their plan because you are walked‑up press (ph).
We would like to continue to improve on press and be a good press team. But again, if you're‑‑ pressing in three‑deep is different than pressing in cover one or blitzing. It's a total different deal.

Q. After looked like he dropped into deep third or something, what was going on there? C.J. rolled in and stuff and they popped a play, I guess my point is, what did y'all work on this past week to sort of tighten those kind of things up or what was sort of the emphasis?
COACH WITHERS: Well, a lot of it is, when we are playing thirds coverage and we are using what we call a clue technique, where the corner has to clue two to one, he has to stay on top and stay square. So if two goes to the flat, he's on top of one. If one and two go vertical, he's got to split hem and we have to help him with a little bit of reroute on number two. That particular play, we needed a corner on top, we needed for C.J. to intercept the ball because they throw into buzz coverage.

So one guy then has the responsibility of covering 2 men unless we get a reroute on the second guy? That's the dumbest damn thing I've ever heard. No wonder we're getting shredded in the secondary. Ever heard of a defensive audible?

The troubling thing to me is that adjustments are being made but it seems to take a full half to make them. With Heacock the adjustments generally seemed to be made after a series or two. If Ohio State gets the opportunity to play one of the elite teams in a bowl game halftime adjustments will be too little too late.

This is Urban's team and he has to make the over-all decision on how the groups work together in a game plan. Last year, he decided we needed more pressure so he told the defensive coaches to "dial it up". That worked last year. Timing of pressure is everything.
This week against Ped State, they may find bringing "pressure" early and often works better against their freshman QB.

Didn't we think that the coaches would call for more pressure against Iowa QB as well? Is entire year it seems like fans have clamored for more pressure and press coverage, yet on Saturdays we grow further frustrated because we're still in soft zone and blaming it on the loss of Bryant. Our DBs are having a difficult time in coverage as a whole, and reacting once the WR makes a play on the ball. 5-8yd plays have been turning into 20-30yd gains, and I for one thought this would happen against some of the skill position players at Cal, but not against northwestern or Iowa, and certainly not wisconsins WR. I don't have a problem with zone, as long as we stop the big gains, that's not happening. And that can't fall on the loss of one guy. We have a lot of talent at DB on paper, it needs to be coached up whether that falls on withers, fickell or Coombs, someone if not all need to make some changes and light a fire under some asses or this high ranking we have will mean nothing when we're getting blown out in a bcs bowl game and the nation yet again looks at us as overrated chumps with a suspect schedule(pretty much a big conference version of Louisville)

#OhioState leads nation in allowing fewest carries of 20+ yds with ZERO. Every other team has allowed at least 3 such runs.
