2013 tOSU Defense Discussion

Noah Spence is not performing at the level expected of him given the preseason hype.

Jamal Marcus came in on two third downs in the second half and flat out dominated. He almost single handedly stopped those drives and forced field goals. Absolutely huge contribution from him.

I agree that three man rushes and soft zones are infuriating, but if guys like Spence could show the type of explosive rush that Jamal Marcus showed on those plays consistently throughout the game, it wouldn't be as big of a problem.

Any chance that he's still adjusting to the added muscle he put on? He was like 220~230 last year now he's 250 ...

6 TFL and 3 sacks through 6 games. Not dominant numbers that you can tell he's on the verge of getting the sack in a number of instances and is playing strong against the run. As is the case with first year starters, they'll look a lot better by year's end.

The smart ass in me want to ask "Did he go up against Decker all off-season?". The Buckeye fan in me says "I hope so!".

I mean Decker seems to have improved since the Buffalo game. As long as he doesn't decide to run the false start option play he's doing okay it seems. Kid might even grow into a damn good one in Columbus.

Granted he's not at the level of performance that Clowney is so maybe Noah has just hit one of those walls people were talking about during fall camp. I mean a ref could easily go 30 for 30 and 300 yards if he wanted to. I've seen him come close several times while being held. Maybe Vrabel should ask Tom Ryan to come on over and show the boys how to get out of a choke hold.

Spence has been better than Clowney this year.

Enough guys to rotate in now to keep running the pressure at them all game long. No need to play the soft zones if you can get pressure. Push the corners up a little bit and make the QB make a much quicker decision. I don't think our guys are getting beat deep they just aren't adjusting to the ball very well when its in the air. Other than that its the soft zones leaving guys wide open.

Clowney is basically ESPiN hype because of one hit when scUM's o-line forgot to block him on. The guy is nothing more than your typical mid/late first-round DE prospect who has apparently developed a caring problem....

No kidding, hard to believe he inspired an entire SEC fear video. I was just kidding about Clowney in the first place. I have no doubt that Noah has put more effort into this season than Clowney has, play for play it's not even close.

I know the D Line is the heart and soul of the defense but ours is entirely dependent on their play. It's shocking how much better they are than other position groups are on that side of the ball. If the other groups were any where close to as productive we would be a NC caliber D.

I have an eleven year-old daughter who can tackle better than our DBs (and me, for what it's worth). Our (lack of) open-field tackling is shameful. Period. Just take the right angle and wrap the fcuk up. Venric Mark is a player, no question, but he's no bigger than I am. He just wanted it more than our guys most of the time. That's flat unacceptable. And, oy vey, that #17 is still breaking "tackles"...

Exception, Saturday night - Barnett. He brought the wood and was solid.

Please stop rushing 3 guys. When we put 5-6 guys rushing the QB Saturday night, they couldn't do a whole lot. When we dropped 8 back, we couldn't stop them.

Was impressed with a few guys Saturday. Barnett played well, Bosa, Marcus (dude put the RT to shame a number of times), and Shazier was all over the place.

Would like to see tackling get better. Over-pursuit, bad angles, bad decisions (going for pick instead of just making the tackle), and bad tackle attempts (high/arm/etc) has really hurt us this year on defense. Get back to basics and we'll be fine
