Lou responded, 'because that's all he needed'. Much faster than I have, and also read that Woody chuckled. He was a force in coaching. Also read that when he went to coach for a program, his contract read that he could be excused if the HC job became available, at ND or tOSU. So was very surprised when he ranted and railed against tOSU later in his life. Anyway, RIP Lou.

So where did the legend come from? Perhaps it was an assistant who said it at some point, or maybe it was a line delivered in a bust or speech to an alumni group. It’s not clear, but we do know Woody did not say it right after the game.

The Ohio State University Archives does not have a transcript of Hayes’ postgame interview from that day. That would conclusively settle the issue one way or the other, as would a film or audio recording of that interview.

Hayes certainly said those words at some point. It became an often-repeated story later in his life. One of his assistants from 1968, Lou Holtz, has told the story ad nauseum.

1. Lou (for whatever reason) was more than willing to keep the quote "alive".

2. If Woody didn't actually say it, it does sound like something something Ohio State assistant coach Lou Holtz might have said.

Sam McGrath, Assistant Linebackers Coach
Michael Hunter Jr., Assistant Defensive Backs Coach
Wendy Laurent, Assistant Tight Ends Coach

And that doesn't include the other QC and Analyst positions.

I like this move, he's had a down year this year but he's playing on the worst team of the league so hopefully this get's him rejuvenated and he performs to his normal standard with the CBJ. He's a good for this team with how he plays.

Also, apparently, we beat out Boston for him as well.

I think there is probably some truth to the A10 coaches claim that power programs are avoiding scheduling mid major teams OOC that may be capable of stealing bids. They either schedule the mid majors that are already likely going to make the tourney anyway or low majors who would never have any shot at an auto bid. Problem is the MAC is more on the higher end of the "low major" category so this doesn't really apply to a Miami Ohio type team.

So they tried, but obviously they failed. While they made some effort, I think it looks like they waited too long to do it. It appears many of the teams they emailed cold did not need a guarantee game, and in fact several of them responded and indicated that they did not have scheduling vacancies (OSU is in that group). Pitt maybe made the worst choice, saying they needed a game and choosing Hofstra (who they lost to).
