Ohio State Athletics Mourns Loss of Zach Farmer – Ohio State Buckeyes

8/4/2015
The Ohio State Department of Athletics extends its thoughts and prayers to friends and family of Zach Farmer, who died Tuesday after his battle with leukemia. Farmer, from Piketon, Ohio, was 21.

“We are saddened by the loss of Zach,” said Gene Smith, Vice President and Director of Athletics. “Zach was a remarkable young man who inspired us all. He made a tremendous impact on many lives and showed incredible courage in his fight. We send our heartfelt condolences to Zach’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

“Today is a sad day but also a day of peace for Zach and his family,” said Greg Beals, Ohio State baseball head coach. “We will dearly miss our fellow Buckeye, teammate and friend Zach Farmer. I feel blessed to have had Zach in our program and the opportunity to coach him. Although his time here was cut short, his legacy as a Buckeye will be long lasting. I am proud of the fight he fought – we learned so much from him. Zach’s courage to fight, positive attitude and love for his supporters and teammates defines what it means to be a Buckeye.”

“On behalf of the family, we would like to thank everyone at the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, especially Zach’s nurse practitioner Jon Mickle. The family is also very thankful for all of the support they have received from The Ohio State University and Buckeye Nation.”

A freshman pitcher on the 2014 Ohio State baseball team, Farmer was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia April 28, 2014. After successful treatment, Farmer went into remission on June 6, 2014.

“It didn’t go our way, and that’s alright. Life, sometimes stuff don’t go your way,” Thornton said. “But I’m just appreciating the teammates, the coaching staff and Buckeye Nation just sticking with me for four years. I’m so appreciative for everything that happened in my life, man. It’s not the way I wanted to end it, but that’s just how it is sometimes.

"... It hits the heart at home. I feel like I did a lot for this program. The program did a lot for me. The memories, the relationships have done a lot for me," he continued. "Emotionally, crying because you don’t get to share the locker room (anymore) with the guys you’ve been working with since June. So I just told those guys, ‘I’m just one call away.’ If you need anything from me, just call me and I’ll be here. I’m always a Buckeye for life.”

Thornton did more than "a lot" for Ohio State, and while he thanked his fellow Buckeyes, OSU fans can thank him more for what he brought to the program the last four years. Buckeye fans praised Thornton all season, but it was a very special Senior Day that really showed just how much No. 2 has meant to Ohio State.

“Bruuuuuuuuuuce.”

2026-27 Ohio State Men's Basketball

Yeah, it's a lot of unknowns. Maybe the struggles in the portal in recent years just have me snakebit and jaded, but I do feel Devin is a good player who you want to try and keep & don't think it's likely they would get someone else in the portal that would be an upgrade. Realistically, you're bringing in a 5-star SF, which is the position I believe Royal wants to play (and start), but IMO Anthony Thompson is going to be the new go-to guy on this team, so AT's definitely starting. I don't think it's likely that AT would end up starting at SG unless they really strike out in the portal. Even with Devin being a local kid entering his Senior year, it can be a tough sell to get a guy who's started the past couple of years to come off the bench, which is probably what they would have to end up doing if they get a starting guard in the portal.
Devin can be very good if he masters the skills that he is good at. He could be a pro player in the midrange game and a force around the paint, if he applied himself in an aggressive manner ALL the time. Too many times he looks kinda checked out and enamored with the arc or passing too much. Kid can dominate when he gets pissed off.

2025-2026 College Basketball General Discussion

So the B1G now has 4 of the Sweet 16 teams, including Nebraska with their historic first two victories in the tournament. UCLA, Iowa and Purdue will all play with a shot to increase that number tomorrow, but I think they'll all lose. Purdue is a favorite, but I don't believe in Purdue against Miami. UCLA has an uphill battle to beat UConn, but it's theoretically possible. Iowa is up against it facing Florida.

Fair enough but never know who is looking to transfer but in your defense, we have not had a keen eye for transfers thus far.
