Week 3 Game Discussion Thread

not to step into the Keinholz debate but more based on your comment about Day... Is that his limitation as an offensive guy, his stubbornness insisting on pin point passers, or it doesn't matter because he can get the QBs with the passing skills he wants....

its an interesting question to me at least...

I think Day is just so used to and geared toward QBs with better passing skills. Asking him to completely shift away from that and develop an offense around a very limited passer is asking a lot I think.

So a combo of stubbornness and insisting on more skilled passers.

Just to play devil's advocate

Is it a fantasy of the fanbase that with guys like Troy Smith, JT Barrett, Justin Fields, etc, that they automatically want a QB who can run for 50+ yards a game no matter the passing skill or grasp of the offense?

Because if you think about when that decision was made, Sayin was ahead of Keinholz. He still is as a pure QB. Keinholz excels past Sayin in the scramble around and make a play game, which is exciting, but shouldn't EVER be the plan.

People are going to start the "durr look Keinholz can run we shoulda kept him instead" crap. However you can see he's still very limited as a passer. The Louisville coaches are really doing a nice job making the best of it but I'm not sure Day could make a QB like him work with how he's used to playing with more capable passers

WR Michael Jenkins (All B1G, National Champion)

I mean, of course I remember Holy Buckeye. I remember 4th and 14 in the championship game. Those were amazing plays. But that’s not what I was talking about.

I was speaking to the Jeremiah Smith / Marvin Harrison / Garrett Wilson-type catches where you say “how the hell did he catch that pass!”.

Those catches I mentioned were part of incredibly important plays and they were amazing in the context of when he made them, but the catches themselves were not particularly special on their own.

Did he have any ridiculous 1-handed catches? Or catches where he made a bunch of defenders miss? Or where he performed some ridiculous acrobatics to get a foot down?

That’s what I was going for. He wasn’t the fastest, he wasn’t the biggest leaper, he didn’t Moss people, he just wasn’t a flashy receiver like some of the more recent stars. Gus Johnson never would have made up a ridiculous nickname for him. But he was incredibly reliable and productive when he was on the field and the stats bear that out.
I just watched about ten minutes of Jenkins highlights. What struck me after all this time was how big he was and how many tough contested catches he made look easier than they were. Dude came down with a ton of jump balls, using two hands, and never made it look hard. Even Holy Buckeye is a pretty tough catch that he made look easy. On some slants and hooks he did juke a few dudes with quick change of direction, but not too often. There was a lot of Devin Smith, minus the blazing speed, in his deep ball game.

Game Thread Kent State at tOSU, Sept. 19th, 12pm ET, FOX

That was kind of what it felt like to me too. Testing out different things. They were not going to throw alot of things out there, other than to put things on tape for future opponents.

The short yardage and 4th down conversions are a little concerning. It's still early in the season.
I'm not as bothered by it in games like this - Kent is going to send the house against the short yardage plays. It's more important, in my imo, to avoid breaking out the counters to the 9 man front on short yardage in games like this than anything other than a conversion.

Ohio State is so far ahead of teams like Kent State that the short yardage stuff doesn't bother me because they don't need it yet. If they were down to Kent State at any point in time where a short yardage conversion was needed, then there are far larger issues.

If/when/once they do against teams like TCUN or Oregon or whatever, you likely will see similar formations and plays that run off of tendencies created in games like what we had today.

We have one of those in Fahey. He's not the athlete Keinholtz is. TSC is probably a better example actually but he does not look good yet.

Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing Fahey within the ones just on occasion to see what it looks like in case the worst happens

It's already started with the drooling retards on Twitter.

I'm certain that fat fuck on 97.1 in the mornings will start saying it too.
