How Ohio State Kickers Have Performed in Clutch Fourth-Quarter Moments in the 21st Century

Being a kicker can be a tough job.

Do your job correctly? It's what you're supposed to do. Do your job incorrectly? Be ready to hear "you had one job" and perhaps some words that would make your mom blush.

In recent history, it appears Ohio State's kickers have been cursed with late-game yips. Is that factual? Or is it selective memory? As many people remember the agony of defeat – or is that da feet – rather than the euphoria of victory.

After Connor Hawkins’ costly missed 45-yard field goal with 4:16 to play in Ohio State’s loss to Texas this past weekend, we did a deep dive into how Buckeye kickers have performed with the game on the line in the 21st century. Below, we take a look back at all of the Buckeyes’ field goal kicks in one-score games with under 7:30 to play in the fourth quarter or in overtime since 2000.

We’ve divided those kicks into two categories: Money kicks and clutch kicks. The money kicks category includes all kicks where the game was tied or Ohio State trailed by three points or less, while the clutch kicks category includes all kicks where the Buckeyes had a one-score lead. (Note: Ohio State has not attempted any field goals when trailing by more than three but less than seven points with under 7:30 to play in any game in the 21st century.)

Money Kicks: 10/17 (58.8%)

What happened to this freaking "tempo" we were told we would see?!? Could have definitely used it vs Texas that's for sure. The Offensive team is visibly better when we use it but yet...

There is a problem with us being predictable again
We used it early against Texas, but it doesn't make sense to use it while you're up big.

I'm sure that Oregon learned a lot in its 84-0 blowout of Portland State. You don't lose as many NFL draftees as Ohio State has in the last two years and change coaches, and expect to put a similarly polished product on the field. We could be hoping these guys get a shot at Texas again in the run to a national championship, I think.

It's absolutely true. Not that I want to bother engaging you here, but I'll play along.

The fact remains OSU was failing on finishing drives. That's concerning. Happened last week, happened this week.

Sayin is missing reads.

3rd down attempt fails.

They had more yards per game this year!!!!!!!

Pffft. Yard stats are fools gold.

LOL!!!!!!!! That's every game this time of year.

No way? Really?

Of course there are right things to choose from. That doesn't mean a thing, LMAO!
You sound like T-bone or one of the other idiots on 97.1. Emo mode 100% of the time if things aren't perfect. They've triggered you and it's hilarious.

On what basis are you remotely qualified to say Sayin isn't a Heisman candidate? And since when did that even matter?

You just want to be miserable over a fucking game. Life is far too short to be miserable over college kids playing football. To top that off, you don't have anything other than basic observations, without seeing practices or being in team meetings or ANYTHING that could give you context, yet here you are pretending to know something.

Week 3 Game Discussion Thread

not to step into the Keinholz debate but more based on your comment about Day... Is that his limitation as an offensive guy, his stubbornness insisting on pin point passers, or it doesn't matter because he can get the QBs with the passing skills he wants....

its an interesting question to me at least...

I think Day is just so used to and geared toward QBs with better passing skills. Asking him to completely shift away from that and develop an offense around a very limited passer is asking a lot I think.

So a combo of stubbornness and insisting on more skilled passers.

Just to play devil's advocate

Is it a fantasy of the fanbase that with guys like Troy Smith, JT Barrett, Justin Fields, etc, that they automatically want a QB who can run for 50+ yards a game no matter the passing skill or grasp of the offense?

Because if you think about when that decision was made, Sayin was ahead of Keinholz. He still is as a pure QB. Keinholz excels past Sayin in the scramble around and make a play game, which is exciting, but shouldn't EVER be the plan.
