the danger of an 18 team conference in a sport like football

It's really a cultural difference. Folks in the South will flock to watch games with the South Carolina, Miss State, Kentucky, Vandy type teams.

Meanwhile nobody even in their regions could give two shits about your Rutgers, Purdue, Northwestern, Maryland and UCLA types.

Lightning Round: Ryan Day Says the Buckeyes Need to Avoid Distractions, Eliminate Noise to Become First Ohio State Team to Win Back-to-Back National Titles

The Ohio State head coach also discussed Lincoln Kienholz, Bo Jackson, Jermaine Mathews Jr. and Julian Sayin in his nine-minute press conference. We've included a bullet-point recap of the session below.
  • Day said Ohio State tried to get Lincoln Kienholz in for some pass attempts at the end of the Purdue game. Day said the Buckeyes are doing everything they can to keep Kienholz ready to play in games.
  • Day said the coaches saw what Bo Jackson could do during spring practices and preseason camp. “We felt really good about him.” Day said Jackson’s athleticism stands out to him. “It’s been good to see him grow each week, get stronger each week.”
  • Day said Ohio State is excited to play under the lights against UCLA. “Yeah, anytime it’s a night game, it’s exciting. I think we have some good recruits in, which is great. Should have a great crowd. … Certainly looking forward to it.”
  • On Jermaine Mathews Jr.: “If you don’t notice him, just listen for a little while on the field, you’ll hear him. … He’s a competitor. He’s playing well. … He’s playing good football.”
  • Day said Julian Sayin’s family provides a great support system around him. Day said Sayin will need to lean on his family and teammates down the stretch. “I’ve seen him be consistent. I think he shows that same demeanor you see on the field off the field. … Excited to see him now finish off the season the right way and stay focused.”
  • Day said Ohio State's tight end room has good depth. He said the Buckeyes could explore using CJ Donaldson as a lead blocker for the team's running backs rather than Nate Roberts or another tight end. “We’re pretty healthy in the tight end room in terms of depth. … It’s good to have versatile guys like that who are big and strong.”
  • Day said Ohio State needs to avoid distractions and eliminate noise down the stretch. “The thing we got to understand, players, coaches, everybody, how exact, how on point we have to be. That’s every week. The teams that we’re playing now and the teams that we’re playing in the future, we got to be good. … It’s gonna take everything we got to get there. … We’ve done nothing. … None of that has anything to do with moving forward.”
  • Day said Ohio State wants to be the "first team ever to be back-to-back" at Ohio State. To do that, Day said, the Buckeyes have to “focus on what matters.”

QB1 Will Howard (National Champion, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Jon Gruden Says Steelers Rookie QB is a Steal

Former NFL head coach Jon Gruden is a big fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers' rookie signal caller.

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Will Howard is on the team's 53-man roster after being activated from the reserve/injured list, and while there's essentially zero expectations for him this season, former NFL head coach Jon Gruden is bullish on what his future in the league holds.

"I love Will Howard. I'm thankful that he is up. I'm shocked that he's gonna be on the bench much longer," Gruden said on 93.7 The Fan, per Steelers Depot's Josh Carney. "I just think he has everything that you'e looking for. We won a Super Bowl with Brad Johnson. He's got that prototype size I like. He's 6-4, he's 225, 230. He's built like a horse. I mean, he's a big guy [who] can run the ball. You can run the quarterback power plays and all these quarterback draws that everybody likes to run.

"He can keep it on the zone read. He's an accurate passer."

"He's a winner, man. This guy's a winner. He won big at Kansas State, they won the Big 12. He won the national title. He was the wow factor," Gruden said. "He's got a photographic memory. He's a great communicator. I'll be shocked if he's not one hell of an NFL quarterback, and I told a couple of my friends in Pittsburgh, I told [general manager] Omar Khan, 'I can't believe you got him in [the] sixth round."

Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 19 Straight B1G Titles)

Silly question here Back in the day, there was a camp/training academy in Bradenton Fla. Turned out to be the IMG of its time. A precursor maybe? Anyway, is that still going, or it go the way of the dodo? And how is it that seems like there are more foreign players coming across the pond to play in the states? Idle questions....

Is this it?

WR Carnell Tate (All B1G, All American, National Champion)

Absolutely clutch. Reminds me so much of Michael Thomas and EE with the fluidity and sure hands.

Great way to describe him. Not as physical as Thomas but that might help him stay healthy longer. Plus, he’s faster.

I’m always so impressed how much these guys improve in one offseason. Tate went from a good 3rd WR with a ton of potential to the 2nd best WR in CFB. Just the latest in a long line of players who put in the work and take huge leaps from one year to the next.
