Ohio State should feel great about the mental edge they have over TTUN​

This offseason has been nothing but a win for the Buckeyes over the Wolverines. They crushed them so badly last season that they had to fire their head coach. The new head coach doesn't understand the rivalry, and Michigan's quarterback thinks this game is just like any other one.

Day has to be jumping for joy in his office in the Woody when he hears these comments. He knows he has the Wolverines right where he wants them. The entire Michigan program is already mentally preparing to lose when that game rolls around, which is hilarious.

Of course, there are several months between now and The Game. Ohio State has a brutal schedule. They will be focused on winning their other games before TTUN comes to town. The first big one is that matchup with Texas in Week 2. That will be a tough environment to win in.

Perhaps last year's game was the realization that TTUN is a broken program. It will take years to undo the damage of the cheating scandal. Now that they can't skirt the rules anymore, they are in trouble on the field.

They also return 10 starters but only three on defense; Wink Martindale's group hardly was Sherrone Moore's problem the past couple years in Ann Arbor. Factor in a schedule that includes road tilts Minnesota, Oregon and Ohio State, plus home games against Oklahoma, Iowa, Penn State and defending national champion Indiana — in addition to an entirely new coaching regime — and it's easy to see Michigan is out in front its football skis with this No. 16 ranking.

I think this young man deserves all the time he needs to sort things out. He has my faith.

Lincoln Kienholz weathered the storm and had a strong performance against Ole Miss in his first career start. What the former Ohio State QB said after the game means as much as what he did on the field.



The college football weekend brought good news for the Ohio State Buckeyes in their season opener against Ball State, as expected. But former Buckeyes players making their debuts at new schools in Week 1 generated plenty of buzz too, and no one more than former Ohio State quarterback Lincoln Kienholz.

Kienholz spent his first three seasons at Ohio State, where he battled Julian Sayin for the starting quarterback job. Sayin won that job, and Ohio State never had a reason to look back. After sticking around longer than he really had to, Kienholz transferred to Louisville, where he finally got his chance to become a starting quarterback at the college football level.

Lincoln Kienholz settles in after slow start against Ole Miss

Kienholz made his first career start Sunday evening against Ole Miss in a matchup against a top-10 team. The Cardinals were edged 41-38 in a game where they managed just six points in the first half before exploding for 32 in the second. It was rough sailing early for Kienholz against the Rebels, but he settled in and finished 18-of-29 passing for 307 yards and two touchdown passes with no interceptions.

Lane Kiffin did something that LSU fans have never seen happen in a football game, even though he hinted that he wouldn’t​

There’s truly no one quite like LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin, and fans in Baton Rouge got the full experience during the season-opening win over Clemson.



A couple of weeks before the season started, LSU head coach Lane Kiffin hinted that the Tigers’ sideline wouldn’t have too many gimmicks.

Well, I guess he changed his mind.

And I think it’s a good thing.

LSU’s sideline was electric during the 51-10 win over Clemson on Saturday night in Baton Rouge, and there were a couple of fun gimmicks.

We saw Kiffin’s Ole Miss teams have a similar energy in the past (though LSU was more electric).

What we haven’t seen, though, is Kiffin taking a jump shot in the middle of the game.

Kiffin, as he did at Ole Miss, has a basketball goal on the sideline to celebrate big plays.

At one point during the win over Clemson, Kiffin took a 20-foot jumper as LSU was kicking an extra point.

Bryce Underwood struggled against Western Michigan in his season debut on Saturday; that much is not up for debate, except for the last-second Hail Mary. But according to his head coach, the patience for those sorts of games is running thin.

Kyle Whittingham has officially put his quarterback on notice. Michigan Wolverines quarterback Bryce Underwood had a rough outing in the team’s Week 1 win over Western Michigan, and his head coach isn’t sugarcoating the situation. Whittingham was asked about Underwood’s job security following one of the most controversial endings to a college football game we will probably ever see, and his response should raise alarms in Ann Arbor.

The game came down to a Hail Mary because Underwood had a bad game. Not just a shaky game or a forgettable one. A really bad game. This comes on the heels of his first year at Michigan, where he wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire either. The hope was that Underwood used the offseason to develop and take a leap. Based on what we saw in Week 1, there wasn’t a whole lot of optimism surrounding that.

Another year, another 'Dabo is done' moment: Why Clemson's blowout loss to LSU feels like game over​

Swinney's insistence on rehiring Chad Morris and bypassing transfer quarterbacks backfired immediately in Clemson's humiliating 51-10 loss to LSU\​

As one coach's tenure began in glorious fashion on a stormy Saturday night in the Bayou, it felt like the opposing coach's time was ending.

After a dramatic week full of lawsuits, court hearings and threats of significant penalties, Lane Kiffin did what he does best by putting on a show in a 51-10 win over Clemson. LSU looked every bit like a College Football Playoff contender. Clemson was a clear level or two below that standard.

"We got our asses kicked," Swinney said. "We gotta go win next week. It's an embarrassing performance, coaching and playing. We're going to have to own that. We can't let that lead to another loss."

It's the worst loss in Swinney's time at Clemson but, really, it's about so much more. It's about a man who has resisted change, who has bucked traditional wisdom and looks much closer to being unemployed than ever hoisting a trophy above his head again. Maybe the demise began in 2021, when DJ Uiagalelei fell on his face as a starter, or in 2023 when Clemson opened the year with a road loss to Duke after turning the reins over to Garrett Riley. A headline the next morning read, 'How dynasties die: Is Clemson flirting with disaster?' There was a brief stay of execution during the best of the Cade Klubnik years -- with a few what is happening moments sprinkled into a back-doored ACC Championship and CFP appearance -- until everything came crumbling down last season, Dabo's worst since 2010.

Swinney looks out-matched and unable to succeed in this current era of college football. The glory days of Clemson football, which included two national championship wins over Alabama, feel like a lifetime ago. Worse, the path back to that level of success feels impossible now under Swinney.

No one other than Swinney thought hiring Chad Morris as offensive coordinator was a smart decision. It was the ultimate double-down move from Dabo, the defiance that prevents him from evolving as other top coaches have to succeed in the NIL and transfer portal era.

Morris hadn't been a successful offensive coordinator since his first stint with Dabo back in 2011-2014. He failed as Arkansas' head coach, failed as Auburn's offensive coordinator and has mostly bounced around the last six years in analyst roles and back at Texas high schools. There's not another Power Four school in the country other than Clemson that would have hired him as offensive coordinator. Frankly, there likely wasn't a Group of Six one, either.

Swinney, of course, didn't care. He was friends with Morris and thought rehiring him would somehow lead to the same success the duo experienced in the early 2010s.

"There are always tough decisions that have to be made in this profession, and though I had to make a couple tough decisions, it was an easy decision to hire Chad Morris," Swinney said explaining the decision. "I'm really excited for our players. It's pretty cool to have guys like DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins and a bunch of great players shooting me text messages with their excitement knowing what's to come offensively. I think we've got elite offensive personnel, and the name of the game is points."

Against LSU, Clemson totaled 40 rushing yards, only eight first downs compared to LSU's 38 and even made a quarterback switch before halftime. At the time of the switch, Clemson had negative rushing yards. Quarterback Christopher Vizzina had no chance against a swarming and aggressive LSU defense, throwing an interception returned for a touchdown and managing only 83 passing yards on 16 attempts. Freshman Tait Reynolds wasn't any better with a 4-for-6 for 22 passing yards and negative-nine rushing yards stat line. Morris' offense looked completely overwhelmed and incapable of stymying LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker's group.

Away teams cover at a far higher clip than they otherwise should. It’s a massive conflict of interest and college football should honestly ban it, but for whatever reason they don’t….

There shouldn’t be conference referees at all. Just centralize the whole thing with the NCAA. It seems like contracting for the training of and assigning referees is something that even that incompetent organization could manage.
