Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

Yea we should definitely hold James Harden's opinion in very high regard. What is with the league's fetish with this guy?
Harden says he’s the “ultimate players coach” which translates to letting me do whatever I want, take however many bad shots I want, play defense when I want, turn it over 10 times, and he’ll still love me

Sources: Kenny Atkinson to return as Cavaliers head coach

Kenny Atkinson will return next season as the Cleveland Cavaliers coach, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday.

The Cavs advanced to their first conference finals since 2018 this season, the furthest the team has gone without LeBron James on the roster since 1992. But their season ended in a sweep by the New York Knicks where each game was decided by double digits.

Support still remains high for Atkinson from key officials within the organization, team sources told ESPN. And after the Cavs were eliminated Monday night, both Donovan Mitchell and James Harden voiced their support for their coach.

"It's just hilarious," Mitchell said Monday night. "We've done something that we haven't done since 2018. There's going to be criticism everywhere on Kenny, but why?... We did it, but we did it with Kenny. We didn't just go out there and coach ourselves.

"I love Kenny. We love Kenny. We ride with Kenny and ultimately that's all that matters."

Atkinson, who signed a five-year deal with the team in 2024, will return for a third season with the Cavs after compiling a record of 116-48 (.707 winning percentage) during the last two regular seasons. Even though the Cavs fell short of their ultimate goal, Atkinson said after the series ended that he was proud of the group for taking the next step.

Pretty sure Gilbert was aware that two of the coaches we met in the playoffs (and one we lost to) were already here...
So the availability of a 'better' coach is narrow at best

A better coach at this point would be one who the players are maybe less likely to quit on. They've clearly shown they will quit on Atkinson.

Clinging on to a lame duck because "well what if we don't get better" is playing scared and you will never win anything with that attitude.

If they fire him the media will go crazy “HOW DO YOU FIRE A GUY THAT GOT YOU TO THE CONFERENCE FINALS WITHOUT LEBRON”

His incompetence will never be mentioned.

Yea, I 100% expect this to be the logic from the "key people within the organization"

Maybe if the team didn't clearly quit on him after the game 1 meltdown, I could see coming to that conclusion, but you are throwing everything into a guy who the team will clearly quit on if they aren't feeling it, that pretty much show's you aren't actually committed to winning. Even then he clearly has shown coaching incompetence too often and it's a stretch.

There is absolutely zero rational defense to retaining Harden after how bad he hurt the team for most of the playoffs.

They will be the joke of the league if they bring him back. The team completely shut down and quit after the game 1 meltdown, you can't have a coach who a whole team is just willing to quit on. And then factor him being a fucking idiot with the analytics comment too. You cannot bring him back. But it's Cleveland so they probably will
All reports now from ESPN and other insiders are that Kenny has high levels of support from “key people in the organization” and that he will 100% be back next year, as will Harden

Deciding When to Retire

So, this past weekend... Actually Sunday... I flew CLT <--> ORD to attend a memorial service for a 26 year old young man who played lacrosse on a number of teams I coached. I think I met him when he was probably 10. He was on my first team I coached.... and I had many years of spending time with him and his family. Those of you know who know me a bit know that I've had a number of kids who I had the pleasure of coaching through youth ball and through club ball while they were in HS. (note: I intentionally did not coach these kids in HS so as to get other coaching and having spent this time with these kids, I never wanted their HS coached to be second guessed. My own kid is included in this mix.)

Three of them. All kids I coached, made it through college, gainfully employed and valued members of our community and were downtown Chicago... grabbed an Uber to get them home. Drunk driver on the Eisenhower caused a three-car collision. Killed one boy, sent another to the hospital. Third walked away.

Seeing probably 50 kids at a funeral for one of their former teammates and friends makes you really question what the fuck this is all about.

Boss sent me a note this morning... for my annual stock option grant. YAY... not really. I just had to watch a fellow dad bury his (only) son and two months ago he lost his wife due to complications of West Nile (no joke... Chicago suburbs). Yay... more options. Whatevs...

When can I stop trading my time for money? That's a great way to think of it. I could have stopped a while ago, I'm sure. But, this I do know. My time, regardless of how much I'm being paid, is FAR better used to spend time with young people, making them better people and lacrosse players than it is building AI and analytic systems as a professional.

Life has thrown too many signals my way for me to justify not living for myself and _giving_ back in ways that I uniquely can.

The end of this chapter should have a G-D fast forward button.
So sorry for your loss. Praying for the Farraday family. And yes, this is a big reason why I never traded my time for money. I have always prioritized my time for life’s rewards.

Deciding When to Retire

It seems like everyone who has retired, or is looking to retire, is of the mindset, “When can I stop trading my time for money?” Based on that strict definition, I retired in my teens. I have never understood this mentality. Baffling to me. Also, invest in yourself or your own entity, not someone else or their entity. Will change your life.

Dunno @BuckBackHome
Harden is vastly over priced
I was immensely crushed at the failure of the bench
I do give credence that this team has only been together less than 3 months
I am displeased that neither Wade nor Merrill have more than a 6 inch vertical.. but their grit and shooting were admirable
Did I say how pissed I am at the bench?
Playing two VERY physical 7 game series hurt them.. They were gassed and NY was extremely rested
Had they pulled out game 1, who knows
I believe Donavan is injured.. lower leg
Atkinson was constipated. Best case, he deserves 50% of the blame. Not sure a coach swap moves the dial.
I have always believed "You don't need to be the better team.. You need to be the better team for a week"
I am also a believer that you go as far as your backups can take you.. in any sport, especially football and basketball
