Keep in mind this was the standard way of doing business with regards to college athletics for decades. Paying players was something that just happened.

This part of college football history has been completely forgotten, and I have to believe that’s with intent. The NCAA purposely has tried to convince us that their entire history has been about amateurism. Part of the video I’m working on will prove that point.

16 Ohio State players were paid to play football in 1949. Eight of them worked for the State Public Works Department.

When you read that statement, is your first thought that they were committing some kind of NCAA violation?

Because if it is, you would be wrong. This is how things worked then.

This was before the NCAA had any sort of real enforcement or really any rules about how to handle players.

I am convinced that we don't know this part of NCAA history because it's pretty much been buried by the idea that amateurism has existed throughout college football history.

An Ohio State Football Player Got Paid As A “Tire Inspector” in 1949​

I am doing research for a video that is essentially about how we got here.

In other words, how did college football become the mess that it is now with what seems like no rules, no controls, and complete chaos?

Very specifically, I’m researching something called the Sanity Code. The Sanity Code was an attempt by the NCAA to actually enforce rules for the first time regarding how players could be compensated and whether or not they could have scholarships.

I won’t go into detail about that right now. But during the research, I’ve discovered that in 1948-1949, Ohio State had 16 players that had state jobs. In other words, they “worked” for the state of Ohio. They were paid for these jobs because that was a part of doing business back in the day.

This is from an article in “The Capital Times” of Madison, Wisconsin on December 13, 1949.


Jerry Krall, who was Ohio State’s running back, got $115 per month as a tire inspector. At least that’s what his job title was. That is the equivalent of nearly $1,600 per month today. It’s nowhere near What we’re hearing about NIL in today’s market for college football players, but it’s pretty substantial for the time.

Put it this way, in 1949, a plumber, a journeyman plumber, made around $450 for a month. An experienced electrician made less.

I’m all for bringing on another QB too and letting them fight it out, but he’s been a Buckeye since a kid it seems(and is extremely talented as well), I hope he gets the opportunity. Then he needs to win the job but I’d hate to see this kid start his career somewhere else at this point.

Im not disagreeing with you, and I’d also like to see him in the class. But in reality I’m hearing more and more that it’s looking like only 1 QB in the class. And I can’t blame Day and Fessler for pursuing the best in the class if they can. It’s starting to seem like the staff might think that he’s reached his ceiling. At least that’s the vibe I’m getting

Report: Urban Meyer loses grievance over firing, saving Jaguars $30M​

Former Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer has lost his grievance against the team regarding receiving the balance of the remainder of his contract after his 2021 firing, according to On3.com.

An independent arbiter ruled the Jaguars were able to fire Meyer with cause and would not have to pay him more than $30 million for the final four years of his contract, which he would have been due had the arbiter ruled the Jaguars fired Meyer without cause, per the report.

The Jaguars fired Meyer on Dec. 16, 2021, ending an 11-month tenure that included a 2-11 record, multiple off-field incidences, and kicker Josh Lambo's allegation that Meyer kicked him in the leg while he was stretching in warmups before a practice during the week of the final preseason game.

Then, the extremely high priced (chairs the executive committee at Winston & Strawn) mouthpiece will bury the court in continuances and paperwork until the season is over.

Texas Tech's Brendan Sorsby files injunction, seeks eligibility​

Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who has sought treatment for a gambling addiction, filed for an injunction against the NCAA on Monday, seeking his college eligibility for the 2026 college football season.

The filing, made in district court in Lubbock County, Texas, cites the NCAA's "deeply hypocritical" position on gambling and a "wholesale abandonment of its obligations and duties to promote the well-being" of Sorsby.

The NCAA prohibits student-athletes from betting on any NCAA-sanctioned sport, professional or collegiate. Penalties can include permanent ineligibility, especially in cases in which athletes wagered on their own team or manipulated their performance.

Sorsby, who has prominent attorneys Jeffrey Kessler and Scott Tompsett as part of his legal team, is "currently ineligible to play for Texas Tech due to prior violations of the NCAA's sports gambling rules" and says he will be "irreparably harmed" if the injunction isn't granted.

The NCAA has yet to make any public decisions on Sorsby's status, but it did issue a statement Monday saying that it had not received a reinstatement request for this case.

"The Association's sports betting rules are clear, as are the reinstatement conditions," the NCAA statement said. "When it comes to betting on one's own team, these rules must be enforced in every case for the simple reason that the integrity of the game is at risk. Every sports league has these protections in place, and the NCAA will continue to apply them equally because every student-athlete competing deserves to know they're playing a fair game."

The filing by Sorsby's legal team says the quarterback suffers from a "clinically diagnosed" gambling disorder, which is "a mental health condition."

"The NCAA has weaponized his condition to shore up a facade of competitive integrity, while simultaneously profiting from the very gambling ecosystem it polices," the filing states.

Among the claims for declaratory relief in the suit is a request under the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code for the NCAA to be "precluded from enforcing its gambling bylaws against Mr. Sorsby to deny or withhold his reinstatement." It requests that he be eligible to "participate fully" for Texas Tech in 2026, including in games. It requests that any NCAA action to the contrary be deemed "void and unenforceable."

"The relief is narrow: one student-athlete and one senior season," the filing says. "The NCAA will suffer no cognizable harm from letting Mr. Sorsby play football while this case proceeds. But if this Court does not act, no future judgment can give Mr. Sorsby what the NCAA will have taken from him."

Sorsby has been in an inpatient residential treatment facility since late April, after he revealed that he placed thousands of bets on sports.

"If I cannot practice with the team, it will be severely detrimental to my mental health and my development as an athlete," Sorsby said in an included affidavit. "Without access to coaching, teammates, and on-field repetitions, I cannot develop the chemistry and skills necessary to start at quarterback in the 2026 season -- and each additional day away compounds that harm. These developmental opportunities cannot be replaced or replicated."

The bets Sorsby placed included small wagers on Indiana football -- between $5 and $50, the filing says -- "to win or for teammates to exceed expectations," although he didn't play in any of those games for the Hoosiers. The filing claims he stopped betting in 2022 when he became the Hoosiers' backup quarterback.

Just sayin': Apparently he does/did have a serious addiction to gambling; however, he did bet on Indiana football games when he was on the team.

Yeah, seems like the only 'ballyhooing' done is by the Buckeye beat writers. Nothing national that I can see. But lest we forget, Arvell wasn't exactly a household name before his break-out year that saw him go from a 'no-name' to a top 5 draft choice. There's been top flight talent put on the field, and they have pedestrian play, and get replaced by the #2, who goes on a rampage all over the place. Would be alot easier if there were a fool-proof crystal ball with the answer already written. Such is life. Anyone still have a working '8-ball' that gives you an answer when you tip it over?

A standout at St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia, Harrison received high praise from Baltimore St. Frances head coach Messay Hailemariam following their team's meeting in 2025.

"He is (effing) unbelievable," Hailemariam told On3's Steve Wiltfong in March. "(Alabama five-star safety signee) Jireh Edwards said he played against some of the best and that Jett Harrison is going to be one of the best players to touch a high school football field."

Hailemariam added, "He is completely the real deal. He runs routes really well. He will block. He will do what it takes to be in position. He’ll be a great decoy. Our secondary was like that this past year, and he literally made incredible catches in key situations. We know that ball was going to him, and he still overcame it, and we had a kid going to Auburn, Bama, a kid going to Ohio State (Khmari Bing) and a kid currently committed to Texas A&M.”

Rory McIlroy has heated exchange with fan at PGA Championship​

Rory McIlroy's frustrating final round at the PGA Championship on Sunday boiled over with an angry exchange with a fan after a "U-S-A!" shout from the gallery at Aronimink Golf Club.

An errant shot out of heavy rough at the scoreable 16th hole derailed McIlroy's come-from-behind bid, and he appeared to respond to the shout by using an expletive while telling the fan to "shut up."

The exchange summarized the two-time Masters champion's confounding final round.

McIlroy said earlier in the week that the outlandish and abusive fan behavior he endures -- as at the Ryder Cup in 2025 -- is usually limited to one week every four years, when those matches are contested in the U.S.

Just sayin': If the fan just yelled "U-S-A!" at a time when McIlory wasn't in the process of hitting the ball; I really don't see anything wrong with that. Fans have always been know to yell things after the ball is hit, you hear someone yell "in the hole" all the time. PGA golfers need to block out the fans and give their full attention to their game. McIlroy let the fan get to him. The fan won.
