I always wonder about taped conversations. Who records regular phone calls anyways? Or am I out of the loop and missing out on something fairly routine?

I'm with you, creepy right? It would be like keeping a dress with some stain on it for use later on. Talk about creepy.:tongue2:

You can't not respond to the allegation. I believe Gene Smith was out of town and he's been called back. So I understand the delay, but OSU/Tressel has to issue a response. If they don't, then I fail to see how you could view it any other way.

Silence is silence. They don't have to respond to anyone but the NCAA. They will respond, but it won't be on some flimsy, set-by-some-guy-on-the-interwebz timetable.

As an alumnus and contributor, I expect a response. If one is not issued, I and the rest of the public are free to draw whatever conclusions are appropriate. This isn't a court of law. In the court of public opinion (or in the court of my opinion), there is no right to remain silent.
:slappy:

What's hilarious is I KNEW you would go this route. Keep ASSuming he's guilty without even seeing all of the evidence (of which there is NONE) against him.

At this point if I were a coach I would assume that every single one of my phone conversations is taped or recorded in some way.

It's the sad truth of the society we live in now.

I never assumed anyone was guilty. I do assume Yahoo! has more than just some anonymous source because if that's all they have, this is incredibly irresponsible - and they've built up too much goodwill to risk it all on this.

I want OSU to issue a truthful, complete and flat denial. I hoping for it, waiting for it.

That is not what you said last night. You immediately went to the "If we don't hear from JT, I will take silence as an admission." card almost immediately upon reading the "story" that was more than 80% rehash of already known information.

And I will if there is no response. Absolutely.

If someone walks up to you and accuses you of something you didn't do, you don't just let the accusation hang out there without a response.

So, incredibly irresponsible is possible. Alrighty then.

Except no one has walked up to anyone here. You realize if the university responded to EVERY bullshit rumor out there, they would be on TV 24/7 right?

It's a story citing an anonymous source that backs up absolutely NOTHING with any evidence and immediately rehashes what we already knew. People can accuse all they want - without evidence or an official inquiry from the NCAA, Ohio State doesn't have to do shit.

Either way the court of public opinion means nothing really - to include your (and my) opinion or ASSumptions on the matter. All that matters is what the NCAA and OSU want to go through with in this matter.

Have a little pride and stand by your goddamn man. Fuckin A. It's not like we're backing up Dennis Erickson or Barry Switzer - the head football coach is a man with YEARS of integrity and ACTIONS proving that integrity. Have some faith for once.

Actually, in a lot of cases that's exactly what you should do if someone makes a completely baseless accusation about you. A person who is completely certain that the accusation is incorrect is under no obligation to respond/stoop to that level.

Now, granted, we're not talking about someone coming up to you on the street, we're talking about the coach and administration of a major college football program, so obviously a response is to be expected: there's a ton of media interest on this right now, and a lot of people greatly invested in OSU who want to get more info on this matter. But not responding would NOT be admitting guilt, it would just be really bad PR.

It the unstoppable force (Y! Sports) vs. the immovable object (Jim Tressel). Until I am led to believe otherwise, I'm siding with the immovable object. There you go.

That doesn't necessarily mean they'll behave responsibly on the phone. I actually work somewhere that telephone calls are recorded frequently. You eventually get complacent and don't even think about it. It isn't far fetched that someone says something incriminating even with the prospect of the call being recorded.

That is modern journalism. They throw shit at the wall and see if it sticks. They heard something from someone, they ran with it. There may be truth to it or there may not be.

What I found even more peculiar was that I read somewhere when all of this was going down that they had known about it that entire time but had not been able to verify it. Which, I think, is the most likely story here. It would seem like quite a leap to say we were trying to sweep it under the rug.
