I think Yahoo went poking at a bear with a stick on this one. Going to print with a story accusing a major CFB program, of major volations, with an unnamed source is just bad buisness.

I feel like OSU/JT are about to bring the rain against Yahoo.....

I would like to see a certain level of indignance in OSU's response today, not just a no-comment-for-now we're-looking-into-it but-maintain-innocence generic response but one that reflects some kind of dismay or disgust with this kind of unattributed accusation. That would make me feel a lot more confident that this will blow over, and could also help to reframe this story, maybe with a focus on Yahoo's investigative methods.

Legitimate question- was it "we first heard about it in December" or "This came to our attention in December..."

Haven't read the transcripts in a while.

I was thinking the same thing to myself as I typed that. I don't recall the word for word, we need to get the transcript posted because it's going to be important soon imo.

I expect a thoroughly poignant rebuttal from Tressel today. That's not a demand, just that I have such respect for him that it's like expecting Will Smith to make a tackle.

I agree that if there was something to this, it would have likely come out in December. That it hasn't makes it sound personal, which in turn makes it less reliable. That Yahoo! is being so secretive about its source and what specifically Tress was allegedly told, makes it seem like a bid to get ahead of a story, without it necessarily being true.

That's not to say that the "source" doesn't "appear" reliable to Yahoo!, just that the information may not be. This also, as someone mentioned earlier, screams inside job.

It seems likely that either the feds told compliance to back off, (as was mentioned earlier), or that the allegations were so broad that nothing could be done to substantiate them. Either way, I'm sure that Tress did nothing wrong. I'm also sure that even if this story is a complete and total fabrication, Tress and the University will never recieve an appropriate apology and the media will drag us through the mud as much as possible in the meanttime.

Screw em. Go Bucks!!!

I'm not quite sure why everyone's talking up Yahoo as the gold standard of journalism. At a minimum, with this story they ran a headline that asserts a conclusion ("Tressel knew") w/o qualification when the text of the story is no more than an accusation from an anonymous source who, apparently, isn't even the "concerned party" who supposedly talked to Tressel. We focus on Yahoo breaking the USC story, but how many others have they missed on (I don't know as I don't pay much attention)? From what I've seen Wetzel isn't Stewie or Hooley or Herbie (if he was I'd be less concerned) but there's just not much here . . . yet.

I'm in wait and see mode and strongly suspect that not much will come out of this, although I agree with ORD that Smith's tossing of compliance staff under the bus didn't sit well with me. JT's unquestionably earned the benefit of the doubt IMO.

The question that bothers me most is why did the "concerned party" wait so long before doing anything. When the season began and saw that nothing had been done or even mentioned by Tressel or OSU, why not go public with the information at that point? The timing is what I still dont understand.

I would guess that yahoo has something else, but they are not confident that it will be enough. If it was a tape or an email, they would have posted that already. I feel they are trying to see what OSU does before making the next move.

Watching it now- initially, Gene says that the feds "brought this to our attention".

Of course, he could have been asked to clarify later and stated that there was no previous knowledge.

My guess is that it's something that came up after the December situation.

Someone going "Man, I told Tress in April that this would be a problem..."

At this point if I were a coach I would assume that every single one of my phone conversations is taped or recorded in some way.

It's the sad truth of the society we live in now.

There are scores of people out there who I am sure love to break stories (true or not) and do whatever they can to achieve their goals, whether they are doing it for money, fame, or...the truth! :wink2:

I've been reading and listening so far, without any real feeling one way or the other. I think Teflon Tressel makes it through ok.
