World University Rankings (MEGAMERGE)

Xavier's rank is a little misleading. It ranks third in the midwest "regional universities" catagory rather than being the third best national university in the midwest. It's kind of like being the 3rd best team in AAA baseball.

They separate out schools that don't offer PHD's and then rank them regionally. So Xavier is the 3rd best college in the Midwest that doesn't offer a PHD program. Like you were saying, 3rd best in AAA.

Since expansion talk is heating up again and whether people like it or not academics will play a factor in any future B1G expansion plans I've updated my composite academic rankings.

Sources used Forbes, USN&WR, Washington Monthly, ARWU, QS, THE, MUP.

I normalized each ranking to a 100pt scale & gave a 10 point bonus to AAU institutions.

660 represents a perfect score.

Obviously I left off non FBS schools (with a couple of exceptions). On the MUP top research university rankings I only used the the combined Top 50. I might go back and do the Top 50 private & public lists separately which will help smooth out the transition for some schools that missed the cut-off for the combined top 50 list.

The Big 12 has really taken a beating academically...losing it's #2, #3 & #4 schools to the Pac & SEC. Nebraska would currently rank #5 in Big 12-2.

Does Chicago even have a football team? I think they disbanded football in 1950s...

Last season in Big Ten was 1939. They didn't field another team until 1963. From 1963 to 1972, they played as an independent with no classification. Since 1973, they have played Division III.

Re: Peace Corp Rank

I fail to see why a higher % of students going into the Peace Corp makes the school better than another school. Sounds like it should be the opposite; I'm joining the Peace Corp because I can't get a decent paying job, i.e. my degree from the school is worthless.

Questioning the importance of the Peace Corp placement rate is fine, but your assumption of why people go into it is off-base. For example, I work directly with students who have degrees in the biological sciences and engineering, who are purposefully delaying their application and matriculation to medical and other professional schools in order work in the Peace Corp, America Corp, Teach for America, and other similar type programs.

Actually, the people I knew who went into the Peace Corps had pretty strong academic records and ended up in top grad schools, the foreign service or the CIA when they came out of it.

As for why it's included in that particular ranking, I think it's for the same reason that ROTC enrollment is included: as a measurement of a university's commitment and success at turning out students who go into fields that provide some form of greater good to the country/world.

Updated the spreadsheet. Added all FBS schools, updated with newer data from one source & removed the non-US schools from the QS list (reducing the number from 600+ to under 200).

The academies are lower than they should be due to several of the datasets not including them due to their unique nature.

Chicago is currently a member of the University Athletic Association, which for football consists of only four schools--Chicago, Carnegie Mellon, Case Western Reserve, and Washington U. of St. Louis.

In other sports, these four are joined with Brandeis, NYU, Rochester, and Emory.
