World University Rankings (MEGAMERGE)

I had no doubt this was the case:

The Big Ten slaughters the SEC.
Of the 11 members of the Big Ten Conference -- University of Illinois, University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, Purdue University, University of Wisconsin, Indiana University, University of Iowa, Ohio State University, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Pennsylvania State University -- all 11 make our top 75. Of the 12 members of the Southeastern Conference -- we'll not list them all -- only Vanderbilt University and the University of Florida even crack it. Football is fine for schools, as long as they're Midwestern.

I guess then, by that measure, the University of Phoenix should rank above everybody, right? :p
Re-read what I posted. More useful in distance learning and in the discipline of gis. It has a more advanced and respected gis curriculum. That doesn't mean State Penn is "better," it just means it wins usefulness points in those categories over Princeton.

Princeton is assuredly more useful than other universities in some disciplines, and less so in others. Would you send your offspring to OSU or Princeton for an OSU strength like Pharma studies? If you want the young'n to get the best education in their field of interest, an inspection of each university's curriculum in the field seems necessary.

In any event... I'm not a firm believer in disciplining my GIS. I take a more laid-back approach. :p :p

It seems like you have a bit of a complex since there is no basis for that reasoning. My point is simply that PSU is more useful in distance learning and that discipline. That fits the study's standards.

Princeton creates more millionaires and more jobs for America that Penn State.

interesting maybe i dont know. but this was a recent article i read. and im going to flip flop the argument a tad.

WSJ.com

the enrollment at princeton is 4,600
ECAC Hockey
10th-25th-median-75th-90th percentile incomes of mid career grads
princeton
68,900-100,000-131,000-190,000-261,000

10th-25th-median-75th-90th percentile incomes of mid career grads
ohio state
The Ohio State University - Statistical Summary
enrollment 60,347
45,500-60,700-83,700-116,000-162,000

now look at those with your princeton education and what do you see?

statistically speaking the top 10% (about 6,035 people) the lowest of that group makes $162,000. what does a similar princeton student make? well we do know they only have 4,600 kids. we do know that the 10th percentil student (4,140) makes $68,900. say thats not fair, lets say the median student, joe blow average of an almight insitution student 2,300 makes $131,000, still well under mr 6,035 at ohio state... point is the law of large numbers is sometimes on your side. reality is the top 10% of the student population at a school like ohio state could go anywhere. reality is that 10% is a greater number of people than many of the ivy leagues and other prestiges schools...

Ohio State +3 in new USN&WR Rankings

Ohio State jumps up three spots to 53rd among national universities in tomorrow's new USN&WR rankings and up 1 to 18th among public universities.

While there are certainly numerous legitimate concerns and criticisms with college rankings and the importance that many place upon them, one can't deny that they are important in attracting the best students and faculty to Ohio State. As a result, any positive movement for Ohio State in the most important and influential of these rankings is a good thing for the future of the university that we all love.

Gee's got a major role in this for sure.

We've moved up pretty consistently under Gee I, Kirwan, Holbrook (as hard as it is for many here to admit) and now Gee II.

The real credit goes back to Ed Jennings, Les Wexner, Milton Wolf and Dick Celeste in the early 80s. They had the vision and the sack to make the very difficult political decisions to turn Ohio State around and put it back on the path it was on before the early 60s.

In other Ohio rankings, Case was at 41. Fredo of Ohio free falls from somewhere in the mid 60s down to 77 (lower than any Big Ten school--just sayin') OU checks in at 115. My prediction is that in the next year or two, UC and OU will flip flop with the former climbing into the bottom of the second tier, and the latter dropping down into the third tier.

I did a google search and Cincy.com said Miami of Ohio was ranked #34. And look at little Xavier! Getting in there at #3 in the Midwest!

Edit: Ok - here is where the confusion lies. When you just rate Public schools - OSU is 18 and Miami 34.
When you bring in All National Schools (public and private) OSU goes to #54 and Miami #77. Makes sense of course - you bring all the Ivy Leaguers and 7 Sisters colleges into play.

The US News Website has the National Rankings (public and Private) up now: First 23 schools are private - yeesh! UCLA comes in as the first public school at #24

Others of Note in the National Rankings:
U of M at 27
Ga Tech - 31
Case Western - 41 (highest rated either public or private in the state) http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/national-universities-rankings/state+OH
Penn State - 47
UF - 47
UGA 58

Xavier's rank is a little misleading. It ranks third in the midwest "regional universities" catagory rather than being the third best national university in the midwest. It's kind of like being the 3rd best team in AAA baseball.
