Who will be tOSU's head coach on July 1, 2012? (betting closed)

My gut tells me that Fickell gets the job on three conditions

  1. He's not implicated in anything by the ncaa.
  2. He has an above average season.
  3. Urban Meyer and Gruden say no.
I'm not crazy with Meyer's off-field record (and I'm nauseated at the thought of Tebow hanging around the program), but I still think he'll get an offer.

Fitzgerald wouldn't interview with Notre Dame, and he's not going to leave NW for Ohio State.

Too much smoke around Oklahoma's program to bring in Stoops. For the Ohio State admin to turn around and bring in a coach with a history of shady car deals around his program would be going utterly full retard in a manner unprecedented in major college sports. Then again, they've had a tin ear to everything else about this scandal, so who knows?

Just curious, how are you defining "above average season"?

I'd say an "above average season" is at least 11 wins, win over scUM, and a bowl win; in addition to no significant player problems (i. e. arrests, team rule violations, accidemic suspensions, etc.). If there are player problems he handles them quicky, fairly, and decisively. All of which may be a "very tall order" for Finkel.

Is finkle a combo of Luke Fickell and Matt Finkes....that is a cross bread monster no one wants any piece of:wink2:

Fickell would need to finish the season strong

In my mind Luke has everything you want in looking for a new HC:

Ohio born and bred
Ohio High School football and wrestling star
Ohio State football star (played on very successful teams)
Ohio State alumnus
He knows Ohio State history and tradition
Has been a key assistant coach at tOSU
He already has relationships with current student athletes and recruits
He has been very successful as an assistant coach
He is a great recruiter
He is young and a rising star in the coaching ranks
He was mentored by the Best. Coach. Ever.
He is a disciplinarian
He has built in relationships with Ohio High School coaches & athletes
He has built in relationships with the Pres, AD, fans and boosters
He would probably accept a lower paid contract than a more high profile guy like Gruden or Meyer.

The only negative, if you view it that way, is that he will only have one year of HC experience. BUT if he is successful this year (winning at least 10 games), despite suspensions, despite distractions, etc. it will speak volumes to what he will be able to accomplish without those things hanging over his head.

Here's hoping that Luke gets the job done both on and off the field.

GO BUCKS!!

In a normal year, yes, Given the suspensions and turmoil going into next season, I'd be happy with a 9 win regular season and New Year's Day Bowl and a win in either that or the Michigan game (both obviously being better).

I agree with all your points. (I'm taking your word for it that he's a good recruiter, as I don't follow that stuff.)

I agree that that IS a negative, in that he may be judged on a one-year period. Fair or not, I think that's how it will be for Fickell.

I also think that a negative may be whatever post-graduate degree(s) Fickell has (or doesn't have). It's not a potential negative in my viewpoint - I judge on performance. But the top-dogs may like that impressive resume some other coach may have.

I don't know who came up with that Top 20 list of potential candidates, but Pelini shouldn't be on it. He was offered the job through indirect channels and turned it down. Not long after, Nebraska renegotiated his contract. Bo isn't coming to OSU, not anytime soon, at any rate.

Meyer is the top candidate to be your next head coach, but it all depends on what the NCAA does. No coach is going to come to Ohio State in the face of major sanctions. If the NCAA drops the hammer it'll be Fickell at least until the sanctions end.
