Who will be tOSU's head coach on July 1, 2012? (betting closed)

I don't know who came up with that Top 20 list of potential candidates, but Pelini shouldn't be on it. He was offered the job through indirect channels and turned it down. Not long after, Nebraska renegotiated his contract. Bo isn't coming to OSU, not anytime soon, at any rate.

Meyer is the top candidate to be your next head coach, but it all depends on what the NCAA does. No coach is going to come to Ohio State in the face of major sanctions. If the NCAA drops the hammer it'll be Fickell at least until the sanctions end.

I'm sorry...he was offered the job already?

In my mind Luke has everything you want in looking for a new HC:

Ohio born and bred
Ohio High School football and wrestling star
Ohio State football star (played on very successful teams)
Ohio State alumnus
He knows Ohio State history and tradition
Has been a key assistant coach at tOSU
He already has relationships with current student athletes and recruits
He has been very successful as an assistant coach
He is a great recruiter
He is young and a rising star in the coaching ranks
He was mentored by the Best. Coach. Ever.
He is a disciplinarian
He has built in relationships with Ohio High School coaches & athletes
He has built in relationships with the Pres, AD, fans and boosters
He would probably accept a lower paid contract than a more high profile guy like Gruden or Meyer.

The only negative, if you view it that way, is that he will only have one year of HC experience. BUT if he is successful this year (winning at least 10 games), despite suspensions, despite distractions, etc. it will speak volumes to what he will be able to accomplish without those things hanging over his head.

Here's hoping that Luke gets the job done both on and off the field.

GO BUCKS!!

:osu:
:oh:

Plus, wasn't it Fickell who had a key tip ball interception (he tipped it to himself) that led to a Eddie touchdown in THE GAME in 1994? Probably saved Cooper's career, although the Bucks were probably going to win that game even without that play. But, kudos again, Fickell! (assuming my remembery is correct).

So, you're saying he was offered the job before Tressel was even gone? I'm calling corn aggy bull[Mark May] on this one. Where's your proof?

You can call whatever you like. You can gig my post for writing something you don't want to hear. But that doesn't make it untrue.

Now, if you'll kindly tell me how to link to a personal conversation, I'd be happy to show you. Oh... wait.

But why the angst? Do you even want Pelini? He's never won anything. Don't you guys have your sights set on Stoops, who has at least won his conference, made it to several BCS games, and won a MNC?

EDIT - and as far as when feelers were sent out to coaches... do you really think your administration has been sitting on their hands hoping that Tressel would be forgiven by the NCAA over all of this? Don't be naive. They knew which way the wind was blowing in this whole deal. Unless they're completely incompetent they would have to cover their bases. That's not a lack of confidence in Tressel, that's simple prudence.

Personally, I don't want Pelini. He's one meltdown away from having to be fired the next day. I just don't like corn aggies posting unsubstantiated--and highly unlikely--self-serving stories that he turned the job down to stay at Nowledge.

Do you have a personal relationship with Bo Pelini himself?

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the current headcoach of THE Ohio State University making the pick at the 6:56 mark.... Suck it, Michigan.

Why would I have angst over this? That makes no sense. It's not my school going through this. I'm just attempting to shed light on what went down from the one perspective I have.

You're right. If OSU beckons, Bo will leave in an instant, and he'll be your next head coach.

My bad. I have no idea what I was thinking, and I humbly beg forgiveness from BP.

I dont represent BP and I never said he would instantly take it....I call bullshit on him having been offered the job with no formal search...thats what Nebraska fans are telling themselves im sure to feel better about the prospects of him staying...my guess is he is way down the list

I really doubt Pelini was approached for so many reasons. First, he I do not think OSU is/was prepared to name a permanent head coach. Second, even if they were, Pelini would not be the #1 candidate. Third, the image of OSU taking the Big 10 Newbie's coach 3 months before the season starts (leaving Newbie with who as their coach?) would look really really really bad from an image standpoint.
