There will be a vBet for this - don't bet on the top line or you'll get lousy odds.

But this thread is being created so there's a spot to discuss the topic, separate from JT's thread and other places where it would pop up.

I really don't like the thought of a coach that flip-flopped and got burnt out in the way he did at Florida coming and being our next coach. How long could he possibly last in Columbus? I would give it 5 years, max.

That said, I can't think of any other candidates off the top of my head. But then, I don't really know what DII schools might have the kind of coaches that Tressel was because I don't really know a thing about that level.

D'Antonio wouldn't be too bad either. He's turned MSU around for the good. However, I don't think OSU wants someone who has turned things around compared to a proven winner who consistently dominated. It'll be interesting which direction OSU takes.

Urban Meyer wouldn't even begin to consider tOSU until we know what sanctions the NCAA hands down to us. That goes for any big name coach right now.

I doubt Dantonio will be a prime candidate. I sense that MSU is a destination job for him in its own right. Plus, if people have durability concerns about a guy like Urban Meyer, what should they think about Coach D?

It is way too early to tell, however, I do not have a whole lot of faith in Gene Smith and Gordon Gee making this decision. Let's hope their coach hiring skills are vastly better than their PR skills.

Yeah, the sanctions will be a factor in who will and won't be interested in the job - providing it comes to that.

Fickell might win the job outright if tOSU has a good year.

But it's going to be tough sledding for him. Starting the year amid all the turmoil, playing without the services of 5 key players and the endless speculation about his job status will be a real test.

I want someone that is basically like Tressel and I feel that Fickell could be the guy.
Much as I revere Coach Tressel, I think the next head coach needs to be a guy who is foursquare disciplinarian, who will exercise zero tolerance against any form of NCAA violation, and who will dismiss summarily any player who shows a desire to accept anything that NCAA rules say he cannot.

This kind of Draconian regime won't make me happy personally (I honestly think young men should get a little more slack), but the NCAA is going to have its sigmoidoscope so far up our ass, I don't see a feasible alternative.
