S/LB Jer'Male Hines (official thread)

sounds like it is not a sure bet that he redshirts

Linebacker joins team

The NCAA gave linebacker Jermale Hines permission to join the team last week.

A heavily recruited prospect out of Cleveland's Glenville High School, Hines will start with special teams.

''Now, he has missed some growth, and he wasn't allowed to even be in watching films and meetings and all that, so we'll have to see in the defensive scheme of things how quickly he'll get back,'' Tressel said, ''but the thing I was impressed with Jermale, I was amazed how he picked up all that our defense does, which is significant.''

It might be best for him to redshirt at this point, but if not, he would at least be a special teams stud. JT can never have too many of them.
He'd have to be incredible for him not to redshirt at this point because he's got some catch-up work to do. So, if he actually proves himself to be ready, then whoa...that's amazing. If not, he'll be ready for next year.

Considering the depth at LB that would be truly amazing.

With our kickoff coverage another stud wouldn't be bad at all.

With the exception of a few run-backs, our coverage has been pretty decent. If Clifford wraps up an easy tackle, NW doesn't run that kick back for a TD. In fact, the only other long run against our coverage team was at Minny when Pretorius made that great tackle.

Still, I wouldn't mind seeing him get a shot on special teams. We still have seven regular season games and a bowl game to go...you can never have too much talent on the field.

I've been lucky enough to see Mr. Hines play both football and hoops the past two years. This kid is just an accident waiting to happen on the football field. He may end up being one of the best recruits in this class by the time he leaves here. Whether he "shirts" or not, I'll tell you one thing, if he and Rolle are both on Special teams next year, you're gonna see alot of kick returners ready to puke at the thought of having to run the ball back against these two.

I can't say I understand the move. Its hard to doubt Tressel's logic but it just seems to make more sense that he redshirt.

Perhaps the change in our linebacker depth has something to do with it. Terry is out for the year, Homan has been hurt, and Gibson was suspended for an unknown reason. What happens if Freeman or Grant gets hurt? (Spitler and Rolle have been getting reps in the middle). It's good to get Hines some game-time experience if he really is picking up the defense well in practice.

Didn't even know about Homan and Gibson, I guess I need to stop slacking on the current player threads.
