S/LB Jer'Male Hines (official thread)

Kinda surprised here, but in a very good way. Hines has really crazy closing speed on defense, which on a few occasions allows him to be a little tentative on a play and still plant the tackle. It's funny to see the QB in one clip not even bothering to go throw the progress and simply ducked because he saw Hines crossing the LOS. With this kind of acceleration, you would think that no RB is ever getting to the outside against OSU. But I guess Rolle is better. :yow1: Hines could also make a really fantastic safety, but then you got two sophomores sitting on the safety positions right now. So I guess the good news is that Hines is so impressive that the coaches just can't wait to see him out on the field. Gosh I love Tressel.

I'm not sure why you think this has to do with Boom. The coaches want to redshirt him no matter what.

Watching Hines run, I see similarities to McFadden. Plus, he has some experience playing QB. I think Tressel may try something similar to what Arkansas did against LSU.

I was thinking today about that. Put Hines in there in a similar role. I would have liked to see us use TG more like that. It could be on an important 3rd down play where LSU has no clue what just happened. Who is this beast that just came in?

Now looking back at the game, It would have been interesting to run a direct snap to Hines in a siuation or two. I just think we became predicatable as the game wore on. Run, pass, run, punt. Repeat.

Us younger generation Buckeye fans are all a bit less traditional then the older generation. We grew up on the West Coast Offense and the Spread.

I stated in another thread, using Henton...or Hines in this case could have been a nice crease.

Arkansas used it so well. I would have liked to bring Boeckman and Henton or Hines into the huddle. Then split Todd off wide left...and run Tony or JeMale with Beanie on an option right.

The 3rd and 7 down with 6 mins to go down 31-17 on LSU's 45 would have been good timing. Boeckman ends up getting sacked 6 or 7 yards. I have confidence the option would have picked up 3+ yards at worst... more than likely more because we would have caught LSU off guard. Either way could have had a first down or 4th and short. And more importantly kept LSU on their toes and not so zeroed in on Boeckman and Wells.

We recruit athletes...we need to use them. Just ask Joseph Barksdale.

Where is this future star going to play?

I remember watching the game between Warren Harding and Glenville on Fox Sports Ohio, that Hines simply dominated Offensively and Defensively. Easily the best player on the field that game. I'll bet Worm remembers that performance well. I would pick him to be one of my unexpected breakout players next season but I'm not sure what position he'll play.

I hope Tress and Co. figure it out!

Who made a mark? Jermale Hines

Sunday, April 20, 2008 6:39 AM

Jermale Hines

? Basics: Sophomore outside linebacker
? Quick history: Considered one of the top athletes produced by Ted Ginn Sr. at Glenville, he didn't play until the sixth game last season because of a conflict with the NCAA academic clearinghouse.
? Spring-game display: He suffered what appeared to be an injury to his left knee midway through the second quarter after running down the Gray's Marcus Williams on a sweep.
? What it means: Coach Jim Tressel wasn't sure of the severity of the injury. But Hines had been the most notable playmaker in the jersey scrimmage the week before and seemed destined for the two-deep.
? Quotable: "He is so physical, and so fast and athletic. It is unfortunate he hurt his knee, but hopefully it is nothing serious because I think he could help our team out tremendously coming in the fall." -- safety Kurt Coleman

the coaches had nothing but good to say about the impact Hines was having in spring ball, sounds like he can be a disruptive force.

no doubt. Plus he we picked ahead of Tyler Moeller in the Spring Game at the WILL, and Tyler by all accounts was really making a move this spring.

In the end I think both will be in the 2 deep this year. Hines will back up Freeman at the SLB spot and Moeller will back up Homan at the WLB spot. Terry/SLB and Rolle/WLB will also see some time at LB this year.
