COLUMBUS ?
It?s hard to imagine Jim Tressel as Chris ?Beanie? Wells, but if the Ohio State head coach could step into his big running back?s shoes, he would walk away from the Buckeyes in the desert.
Wells is a junior, and could return next season to play running back for Ohio State. That seems unlikely.
He?s also a bruising back with a burst that NFL general managers tend to froth at the mouth over and is likely a high first-round draft pick. After the Michigan game, Wells said he hasn?t thought much about the decision.
There is a good chance when Ohio State plays Texas in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 5, it will be Wells? last game.
However, his eyes did glint slightly after the Michigan game when he was asked about returning to make a Heisman Trophy run as a senior since it was ruined this season by a foot injury.
If it was Tressel?s decision, would it be tough?
?If it were me, it wouldn?t be tough,? Tressel said.
Would he turn pro?
?Shoot, yeah. In my opinion, he ought to be one of the first five guys picked,? Tressel said. ?We haven?t had that discussion yet. I also told him don?t bother filling out the NFL sheet, because I could fill it out for him.
?We?ve always said if you?re going to be a top-round pick, you may want to think about going.?
