QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

Just an interesting contrast - Before the season (coming of his 2007 campaign) Profootball.scout had Boeckman pegged as one of their top ten QBs in an early look for the draft:

Strengths: Boeckman is a strong QB with great poise and presence. He has a strong arm and delivers the ball with precision. He’s accurate on deep and intermediate routes, and gives his receivers a chance to make plays. He has good mobility and can make plays with his legs. He’s a smart player who makes good decisions. Weaknesses: He’s developed nicely and has shown a lot of promise, but he has lapses during games and will turn the ball over. He doesn’t work well under pressure and needs time in the pocket to get a throw off.
Steuber Says: The biggest thing that stands out to me immediately about Boeckman is his size. He’s a huge quarterback with a tremendous arm. He has great playmakers on offense, and they add to his success, but Boeckman possesses leadership qualities that make the Buckeyes’ engine run.
Early 2009 Draft Projection: 3rd Round

Note - all the weaknesses we are talking about are there in black and white - needs time in pocket, has difficulty with pressure.

Now? He is listed as the 27th best QB Pro prospect.

which puts Boeckman behind both Missouri QB's - yep, Chase Daniels, the 6-0 system QB and the extraordinarily lightly used Chase Patton merit higher ranking than Todd -

I've got a sneaking suspicion that, in the end, pro teams will be more inclined to give a shot to the owner of these stats: 3,085 yards, 31 TD with the bulk coming in the '07 season.

over these: (1 TD, 1 INT of 31 attempts in two seasons of play).

Either that, or Boeckman will be the inspiration for the next remake of the Replacements.

Yeah, I keep hearing this. You're looking at it the wrong way. He's not being looked at as a high pick. He's a low pick or free agent. No one expects him to carry a team to the Super Bowl. I'm sure a lot of teams like his size and character. He's a nice option as a back-up.

My guess is that other "options" will be explored for backups. I have no idea whether Todd will get drafted...I certainly hope he does, but I've seen nothing to indicate he'll stick.

Bengals give OSU's Boeckman a shot

All quarterback Todd Boeckman wants is a chance to prove he?s worthy of the NFL.
He?ll get that opportunity with the Cincinnati Bengals.
The former Ohio State quarterback from St. Henry High School, along with OSU offensive tackle Steve Rehring, has accepted the club?s tryout offer at its rookie minicamp Friday through Sunday, May 1-3. They report to Paul Brown Stadium on Thursday.
?Anytime you get an opportunity to fulfill your dream, it means a lot,? Boeckman said Monday night. ?It?s a great opportunity for me. I just want to show what I?m capable of doing and prove I can make this team.?
Purdue wide receiver Greg Orton (Wayne High School) reportedly signed a free-agent contract with the Bengals. Numerous non-drafted Buckeyes are getting a shot ? Alex Boone (49ers), AJ Trapasso (Titans), Rory Nicol (Redskins), Brandon Smith (Bears), Ben Person (Lions) and Nader Abdallah (Jaguars).
Boeckman led the Big Ten in passing efficiency in 2007, completing 191 of 299 (63.9 percent) for 2,379 yards, 25 TDs and 14 interceptions.
Even though he lost the starting job to Terrelle Pryor in 2008, Boeckman attracted NFL scouts.
?You look at my film and I have good accuracy, good touch on the ball and a solid arm,? he said. ?Hopefully all that translates to the NFL.?

Bengals will take look at Boeckman on weekend

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

His heart is with the Cleveland Browns, but Todd Boeckman now hopes to play for his favorite team's cross-state rival.

The former Ohio State quarterback and 2007 All-Big Ten player is headed to Cincinnati this weekend for a tryout.

"I'm a Browns fan," Boeckman said yesterday, a bit sheepishly, "but it's nice just to get an opportunity to go somewhere and get a chance. I'm looking forward to it."

Cincinnati has three quarterbacks on its roster: starter Carson Palmer, journeyman veteran J.T. O'Sullivan and third-year pro Jordan Palmer, Carson's younger brother.

Read this in the local paper which of course means it is no where on the internet.

"The Bengals' front office has some familiarity to the Mercer County area. Jim Lippincott, Director of Football Operations for the team, was head football coach at Marion Local from 1974-1977." - Gary R. Rasberry, The Daily Standard

For those that don't know St. Henry and Maria Stein (Marion Local) are about 2.5 miles away from each other.
