Former University of Tulsa quarterback legend Paul Smith has one year of NFL football under his belt.
Now he?s battling to make sure he has a second ? at least with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Smith?s father Ron Smith, who also is the Bartlesville High head football coach, said his son is working hard to keep his No. 3 spot with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Smith, who wears No. 12 and is listed at 6-foot-1, 202 pounds, was signed as a free agent last summer with the Jaguars.
He began his tutelage on the practice squad, but progressed to the No. 3 spot on the depth chart, where he remains, according to Yahoo Sports!
David Garrard holds down the No. 1 spot while recently-signed Todd Bouman, a 12-year league veteran, is listed at No. 2.
Bouman was inked May 5 to a one-year contract as an unrestricted free agent from the Baltimore Ravens.
Last year?s back-up quarterback, Cleo Lemon, was released June 17.
Smith?s biggest challenge in holding on to his roster spot is former Ohio State signal caller Todd Boeckman.
Boeckman signed June 17 with the Jaguars as a rookie free agent. He reportedly also went through a tryout with the Cincinnati but was unsigned.
Boeckman was forced to the bench last season with the Buckeyes after being beaten out by Terrelle Pryor. The prior year (2007), Boeckman had been named All-Big Ten.
Like Paul Smith, Boeckman (6-5, 244 pounds) went undrafted.
Ron Smith, who is starting his fourth year with Bruin football, said Paul Smith feels confident in his competition against Boeckman.
