Vince Koza: Boeckman wants a shot at NFL
June 10, 2009
By Vince Koza

Todd Boeckman is sitting by the telephone waiting.

Waiting for a call from an NFL team to invite him to their training camp this summer.

He's been waiting awhile now.

The former St. Henry and Ohio State quarterback wasn't drafted or signed as a free agent, but did get an invite to work out for the Cincinnati Bengals the week after the draft.

Boeckman thought he did well, but the Bengals never said. Cincinnati never gave him a response to whether he had made the team or didn't, or how he performed. He hasn't heard from them since, either.

Later, he found out the Bengals had signed a quarterback before his workout.

He never had a chance.

Boeckman is living in Columbus. He works on his golf game (says he needs a lot of work at that) but continues to workout to stay ready in case the phone does ring.

He's still waiting.

Boeckman did get a phone call from the Youngstown franchise of the Arena Football League 2, but didn't think it was a good fit for him. "The risk wasn't worth it," he said.

He took the high road despite being benched three games into his final college football season.

"I could have complained, but I didn't want to hurt the team. I wasn't happy about the coaches' decision, but decided to keep quiet and do what was best for the team."

Now he admits the benching during his senior season is probably the main reason he is not getting the phone call from an NFL team.

Boeckman is not giving up hope. He says he has heard from people telling him to stay in shape in case the phone does ring. He is also considering the Canadian Football League and the New United League. Whatever that is.

Jaguars add former Buckeye QB Boeckman

By PFW staff
June 17, 2009

After releasing four players Wednesday morning, the Jaguars continued their roster shaping in the afternoon by signing QB Todd Boeckman and WR Andy Strickland. Additionally, they waived WR Jason English. All are rookies.

Boeckman figures as the No. 3 quarterback behind starter David Garrard and Todd Bouman. The termination of 2008 backup Cleo Lemon?s deal left a QB spot open.

Boeckman was relegated to backup at Ohio State as a senior following the Buckeyes? meltdown in an early-season tilt against USC and went undrafted in April.

Jaguars drop Lemon; Bouman to be No. 2 quarterback
Team trims roster to 80 players for training camp.
By Vito Stellino Story
Thursday, Jun. 18, 2009

The Jaguars' backup quarterback battle ended almost before it began.

The team terminated Cleo Lemon's contract Wednesday and awarded the job to Todd Bouman, with one organized team activity session remaining today.

Lemon's departure - as a vested veteran he doesn't have to go through waivers and is free to sign with any team immediately - was one of several roster moves and left the Jaguars with 81 players, one more than they're allowed to bring to training camp.

To give them four quarterbacks in training camp, the Jaguars signed Todd Boeckman, an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State who lost his job to freshman Terrelle Pryor three games into Boeckman's senior season last year.

Boeckman will compete with Paul Smith for a practice squad or third quarterback job, but the Jaguars are likely to keep only two quarterbacks on the active roster. They could also sign another quarterback during camp off the waiver wire.

So they are getting rid of Todd Bouman for Todd Boeckman? Maybe they just don't want to confuse any of the players...

I knew there were some smart people in NFL. Best of luck, Todd!

They are actually getting rid of Lemon and getting Boeckman. Bouman will be the back-up.

When life gives you Lemons,
throw them out
and pick up Todd Boeckman!
Best wishes, TB!
