QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

I'm not sure that he was thrown under the bus. Tressel definitely took some blame, too and passed some to other units. He sure didn't say that Todd cost OSU the game.

However, it struck me as unusual for him to be so openly critical of a player and his mistakes to the media. It seems to me that he'll usually deflect and spread the blame. "Well, we didn't put Todd in a good position to succeed, the line didn't get him quite enough time, USC had a heckuva gameplan on defense, and Todd made a couple of poor decisions" is what I expected to hear. He was definitly more pointed in his criticism than I'm used to.

I look at Tressel like a corner man saving his fighter to fight another day. To say Todd has been struggling is an understatement. To watch that first pass with little D pressure being applied was painful. Why subject the young man to more of the same. If as fans are saying OSU needs Todd down the stretch, don't wait for the knockout punch before you can get him out of the ring and start to rebuild confidence. Todd knows the score. He won the job once, and he understands he needs to continue to work to retain the job, and I have no doubt he will at least rise to the competition.

That's exactly it. I believe that if we were talking about something that 99.5% of other coaches say, there would be no mention of this.

It's a matter of contrast to his typical MO that may have people thinking that the bus doth runneth over TB.

Rob Oller commentary: In Boeckman's case, the rules of booing were broken

Rob Oller says that Todd Boeckman was unfairly booed Saturday.

Time to brush up on our booing, based on the go-for-the-jugular jeering aimed at Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman on Saturday. The ground rules are pretty simple.
? Never boo any athlete in grades K-12. Or their coaches. Or the refs. If you do, you're a dope. Sorry, you just are.
? Boo college athletes only when they cross the line of protocol so far that they deserve to hear about it. For example, when OSU linebacker Robert Reynolds put a choke hold on Wisconsin quarterback Jim Sorgi in 2003, the appropriate response was to boo him off the field.
? Feel free to boo college coaches for pathetic play-calling or decision-making and the zebras for blown calls. Most of the coaches are being paid handsomely to have their act together. Money matters. To whom much is given, much is expected.
? Boo the pros from the bottom of your heart. Nothing personal. Just business.
? Boo Weekley, especially after the Happy Gilmore dance.
But boo Boeckman? Nope. Shouldn't have happened. If you must, turn to your buddy in the stands and rip the Buckeyes' sixth-year senior; that's called individual irrationality, one fan venting to another. In that case, Boeckman is the target without knowing he's the target. No harm, no foul.
The problem is when catcalls become corporate and booing bounces around the Horseshoe like a vicious version of O-H-I-O. As mentioned, booing college athletes is almost never OK, but booing Boeckman was borderline despicable.

Springfield News-Sun: Booing Boeckman? Shame on you

Booing Boeckman? Shame on you

To all the so-called Ohio State fans who booed Todd Boeckman, you showed yourself to be a classless bunch.

Your actions stained a day which should have been nothing but a celebration of a young talent's debut at the helm of the Buckeyes.

Cheer new quarterback Terrelle Pryor, the highly acclaimed freshman. He deserved it for leading OSU past overmatched Troy 28-10 Saturday, Sept. 20.

But shower Boeckman with scorn?

That's a new low, even among those twisted few at OSU who think it's cool to spit on Michigan fans and torch old furniture and parked cars after big victories.

Im not gonna lie, I have muttered to myself (and the TV) when Todd made a bad throw or took a sack but I have not sat in the stadium and boo'ed him. I just wanted to post in his thread that I am thankful for all the hard work he has poured into my favorite football program and that I hope he realizes there are plenty of Buckeye fans that still have his back. Thank you Todd and good Luck the rest of the season and in life!!

:oh:

I really want TB to succeed. He has put in his time and all the hard work should be rewarded. I feel The Browns are in the same boat as the Bucks. The fans want to see "the future" in Quinn and Pryor. I also think back to that night in Ohio Stadium against Texas. When Zwick was in the game the players seemed to "go through the motions". When Smith came in the crowd was energized and the team seemed to rally behind him. Like the old saying goes "people tend to root for the underdog" I hope TB keeps his head up and can come in and help us if the kid runs in to trouble. He is a GREAT BUCKEYE and I hope him the best whatever happens the rest of the season.

Boeckman holds his head high

FRED SQUILLANTE | DISPATCH
Todd Boeckman led the Big Ten in passing efficiency last season as the Buckeyes advanced to the national championship game.

How bad must it have hurt Todd Boeckman's pride to watch last week's game against Troy -- to watch Terrelle Pryor throw four touchdown passes and emphatically seize the Ohio State quarterback job from him? Despite knowing he would be asked about the situation, there was Boeckman in the interview room afterward. As one of four team captains, he was given a choice whether to show up, and he chose to face the media, stiff upper lip and all.
That's Boeckman, his teammates and coaches say -- first class. And how he acted Saturday is how he has been since, they say.
"He's taking it like a champ," offensive tackle Alex Boone said. "He's doing great in practice."
Coach Jim Tressel said he has recently talked to his sixth-year senior about the situation.
"The best thing about Todd is, No. 1, he prefaces everything with he wants to win," Tressel said. "No. 2, he wants to do all he can do. And he'd love to do more on the field, and if he felt any other way, I'd be nervous, but he's going to press on."
It's an awkward situation, the benching of a senior captain, and rare. In 2001, it happened to quarterback Steve Bellisari, and in 2004, to running back Lydell Ross, but those were because of off-field incidents, not performance.

DORAL CHENOWETH III Dispatch
Ohio State's Brian Hartline keeps a tight hold on the football while being tackled by Minnesota's Marcus Sheets after hauling in a pass for a 22-yard gain in the first half.

This week, Todd Boeckman heard cheers, not jeers.
Ohio State's senior quarterback was benched for freshman Terrelle Pryor last week against Troy. When he bounced an incomplete pass, Ohio Stadium echoed with boos.
Yesterday, Boeckman entered with OSU leading Minnesota 27-6 midway through the third quarter, drawing a smattering of applause. He played two series, and on his second, he threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Brian Robiskie.
Boeckman finished 5-of-9 passing for 65 yards.
"(It's) always nice to get back out there," he said. "I felt good about myself today. I thought it was a pretty good performance overall."
Coach Jim Tressel hinted that if Pryor struggled with the passing game, he would not be afraid to use Boeckman again.
