QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

Zwick was the heir apparent from the time he signed an LOI. (I was at the first day of Frosh practice when there still was such a thing in 2002 and watched JT personally work with JZ for most of that session.) He got the practice reps with the 3's while Krenzel and McMullen were here and Smith was getting the odd chance or running with the scout squad. Zwick was the starter at the beginning of last season and Smith couldn't buy his way into a game. Zwick has had every opportunity to make a statement at OSU for three plus years.

Smith took his limited opportunity and made something of it. It is hard for me to understand what sort of growth process JZ is going through right now that TS isn't as well (only more so).

I fully agree that it is great to have the competition and whoever plays we will be the better for it. But arguments that Zwick somehow morphed into something different than he has been based on his limited performance in San Antonio is mostly wishful thinking. It may be the true, but the evidence is weak.

^^ what he said... ^^

FWIW, OSUAlum82 said over on BN that Zwick will start against Miami, but that Boekman will definitely play... he said that Zwick will start against the Horns, but that Smith will definitely play... he said that Smith will then take over as the starter this season, but that he will leave early (apparently scouts were pretty impressed at Pro Day this spring) and that Boekman will be the starter in '06, ahead of JZ...

i'm not saying it's set in stone, but Alum82 usually knows WTF he's talking about...

i know that it doesn't mean shit, but from what i've gleaned from the situation, especially considering Joe Daniels' comments about Todd having 'IT,'
i think that once Troy works his way back up, JZ is going to be the third option...

OSUAlum82 said in late July that, quote: "Todd Boeckman starts unless Justin steps up to claim what should be his. Barring injury it's reasonable to assert that Todd and Justin will remain 1 & 2 throughout the year." I've also been told that Boeckman has been the new #1 since 7-on-7 drills started.

If Smith leaves early for the NFL next spring, I'll be thrilled with the season he had in 2005.

OSUalum82 is a pretty solid poster on BN, but at this point I really don't see Troy Smith being ready to go pro after 1 more year. Like I said, if I'm wrong, we'll be seeing a lot of great things on the field this year.

And I'm not down on TS, or knocking him. At this time last year I thought Vince Young was a great college QB talent, but posted that he wouldn't be ready to be drafted as an NFL QB in 2005. He had a great 2004, but still wasn't ready to be an NFL QB.

Smith is too short to be overconfident about being drafted.
If he is a gamer, the scouts will ignore that height. His feet and extraordinary arm will make up for that...if he displays solid decision-making this year, I don't doubt he will get NFL attention.

TS is listed at 6-1...Mike Vick at 6-0, Steve Young 6-1

I agree he can overcome his height, but if indeed he misses a decent amount of early PT while being punished, I think that further hurts his chances.

Not really the same thing, but nice try.
Not really the same thing, but close enough. I was addressing the assertion that Zwick would be the starter for the entire season just because he may be on the field in wins over Texas and Iowa. Being on the field when the team wins will help one's cause, but is not the be-all-end-all to getting or keeping the QB job. The McMullen example proves that. In 2003 when Krenzel was injured, McMullen went out there and won. When Krenzel became available, he started again. When Krenzel lost that returning start, he still kept the job. That shows that there is more to the QB depth chart that just being on the field when the team wins. It applied to Krenzel and McMullen and it will apply to Smith/Zwick/Boeckman as well.

It's not as if I'm ignoring the possibility that if whoever starts the season as the starts the season under center sets the world on fire, they may keep the job. That's not the argument that my point addressed though...

Everything applies to Smith..but once Zwick wins the texas game as a starter, he is going to start the Iowa game as well..and if he wins that he is going to cement his place as a starter for the season.

fyi, I don't care who starts as long as we win the games. I am just thinking that Tressel isn't going to change QB's if Zwick starts and wins against Texas. As long as Zwick does enough to not lose the game and keep winning..he's going to stregthen his hold on the QB position.
That said nothing about the starter earning the job by being the best QB - it just implied that it can be won through circumstance. If Zwick were to go out there and start the season like he did last year - winning, but playing VERY shaky, I don't see him keeping the job when the know what Smith can do and know how Boeckman has indicated he might do.

Totaly different scenario. McMullen was never the season-starter, while Zwick was. McMullen didn't take the field due to a lack of production as Smith did over Zwick, but rather due only to injury to Krenzel (yeah, Zwick did get hurt in the Iowa game, but Tressel said the change to Smith would've happened regardless). And Zwick (or Smith) didn't lead the team to a national title and 19 straight wins like Krenzel did, so when McMullen subbed for him, it was clearly understood it was only temporary until Krenzel got better.

I didnt used to have trust in Zwick but now I do. I think that he played early on with too much expectations on his shoulders. As criticisms mounted and expectations ebbed, he played much more looser and coolheaded. He will probably never be that perfect field general, but imo, he is as likely as any player to give you all he's got.
