BuckeyeTrail said:when watching troy talk on tv during the michigan game (the segments were filmed before the game, fresh after his turnover-laden game against purdue), he just seemed so poised and confident. like he was thrilled at the upcoming challenge and was excited to take it on. he spoke clearly, strongly, and with conviction. his eyes are sharp and piercing.
when watching zwick talk on tv, he just doesn't seem comfortable. he makes poor eye contact. you get the sense that he doesn't really believe what he's saying. he seems nervous. he's not exactly mumbling, but his words just don't come across as very strong.

scroll down the page a little and you will see the 2005 depth chart
im not sure how old the depth chart is. sorry, i just thought since they posted the depth chart that it might be refuted.MililaniBuckeye said:How old is this depth chart? Until Tressel himself says Zwick will start those games, this is not refuted yet.
I wasn't referring to Troy Smith's 'Q' rating, but to what I perceive as a more humble team-oriented attitude displayed in his comments.zincfinger said:Ever seen Joe Montana in an interview situation? Or in his blessedly short-lived tenure as an ESPN analyst? Not exactly Mr. Dynamic Personality. On the other hand, Ryan Leaf was always plenty brash in the interview room. Now, I'm not saying that Justin Zwick is Joe Montana, and I'm sure as hell not saying that Troy Smith is Ryan Leaf (performance-wise or demeanor-wise). My point is that a guy's demeanor with a television camera jammed in his face isn't necessarily an accurate indicator of his ability to lead the team.
Agreed. We may never know the truth to this rumor (tho I bet it was based on something solid)... since Zwick can be excused by "getting injured in camp." It's not his fault, but we'll never know how much Boeckman earned given the unfortunate twist for Zwick (pun intended).MililaniBuckeye said:How old is this depth chart? Well put. The thing that scares me is he played the tough defenses as well. We are a better team, but Marshall, NC State, Wisconsin, Iowa had ferocious lines and good D's (for the most part), which didn't give Zwick any time. We still have a lot to prove with the Shot-ginn & so forth.MililaniBuckeye said:I simply think Zwick has taken too much heat...he does deserve a degree of criticism for his early season nose-dive, yet not to the extent that many have heaped upon him. I personally couldn't care less who ends up being our starter provided he's the best at the position and leads us to victory.
I will agree when we have some consistantly proven perfomers. We do not have that...yet. Not saying it will not happen, but none of these QB's have proven much for very long.LightningRod said:You can't lead the club in a tub. Boeckman is also not to shy to go in front of the press proclaiming this a 3 dog show. What a nice QB situation the Buckeyes are finally in.

You did list the quote you responded to, it just happened to come after my comments of a somewhat similar nature, and I didn't make the distinction that I should have.zincfinger said:I was responding to a different poster, BB73. I didn't see your comments on the issue. In either case, I wasn't referring to Q-rating either, but was disputing the suggestion that there's any useful relationship between a guy's perceived public persona (as determined largely through interviews) and his effectiveness as a team leader and a quarterback.
Putting aside more specific analyses such as who's humble and who isn't, which I don't really have an opinion on, my more general point was that, whether one guy is reserved and another outgoing is, in and of itself, minimally important. That being said, I agree that a guy's personality can be an asset or a detriment. I just question the validity of downgrading a player based on interview style, unless he conducts himself like an ass, which none of these guys does.

I did not catch Chris Spielman's radio show yesterday, but I was told that after watching the morning practice down on the field, he went on the air and declared that Smith would start against Texas. He feels he gives them the best chance to win. A former player from last year's team confirmed the same to me last night -- if Tressel believes 10 gives them the best chance to win and everything else is kosher. I have always believed Zwick would start the first 2. Maybe that plan will change. We shall see.
