QB Todd Boeckman (official thread)

Frankly I'm not really sure who to go with. Zwick had many opportunities to prove himself and he never really did and buckled under the pressure. Smith definitely had one outstanding game against Michigan but didn't impress me overall the rest of his starts. Boeckman...well no one has any idea how he will play against the pressure of an opposing team. I know my comments may seem harsh but the analysis demands it. With that said, I really have no idea who will lead the buckeyes this year, although it would appear that Smith would be in the captain's chair with that Michigan performance. We just need to trust in JT and the quarterbacks coach to make the right call come gameday

Fellas, let's remember that we are dealing with 2 RS juniors and a 2RS FR at QB. Simply put, when you consider what our QB personnel has done so far, you have to consider the fact that they may be only half-way done. Zwick and Smith came in the heralded class of '02 when we won the national championship, and both were redshirted. This should be obvious to everyone. I realize Zwick was crowned king of columbus before he even got there, which is not fair, by any standards. Krenzel was a different breed when it came to winning games, but he also did not have the expectations that have been bestowed upon Justin Zwick. If everyone put the expectations upon Krenzel that they have Zwick, I wonder if we would have had the same results. CK stepped into a no-lose situation, following Bellisari. The OSU fans/coaches/alumni were starving for someone to grab the job by the balls, and, voila, we go 14-0. It was his RS JR season. We could have been 12-2 and Craig Krenzel would still be a legend in Columbus, but we were not beaten. Even by all-world Miami. My point is this, let's give the coaches, the QB's, the entire team, a chance to sort itself out before we go deciding who is best for what, and what would help us the most, and so forth. If anyone disagrees, I would love to hear (read) why, and what could be done about our QB situation. Basically, everyone just needs to chill out and let the ball bounce as it may. Lord knows, a basketball is the only ball that bounces the way it is supposed to.

Rumor or not, if Boeckman gets the start vs. Miami we may have seen the last of Justin Zwick on the field.

As far as skills go Boeckman is capable of taking this team all the way to Pasadena on potential, nasty word. We know what Troy Smith can do on the field its his off the field issues keeping him from being all Big-10 and leading us to another national championship. With that said does anyone think that Justin will stay above Troy on the depth chart? I don't. That leaves Todd controlling his own destiny. He has a great arm. He reads the defense well by all accounts. He's mobile enough. He has the teams confidence. The opportunity comes in three weeks. Who takes the reigns and never looks back? If its Todd, that makes Zwick number 3 and only one more year after this year. I don't want to speculate because I would love for Justin to all of a sudden "light it up" like we were all dreaming he would, but my gut tells me this is going to end up a shoulda-woulda-coulda situation for him.

The bottom line is whoever is under center needs to step up and get it done.

I agree whoever is going to be the center is going to step up. The Offense is now much more improved than it was last year, and not to mention the fact that we have a very promising running game. A running game by itself will give these QB's alot better chance against defenses.

I will say this though. I was impressed with Troy Smith each and every game last year. Everygame Troy got better, and the thing that stuck out most was that he didn't throw any pics till the Purdue game (2 in that game were drops for INT's). Now while he wasn't amazing you do have to look at what with what he started with. He started out with a team on a 0-3 skid that had no confidence and no running game. Now while Troy did get help from the emergence of Ted Ginn, and Gonzo Troy still had to do alot to just get this team started in the right direction.

Miss Cleo got nothin' on Mili! Looks very possible.

And what about Zwick and his string of injuries? We have seen other examples of people and athletes thrust into the spotlight and wilt under the pressure! Is the pressure just too much for Justin? Or is it just the game beating him up?

Boeckman needs some game experience filling in for the starter before he becomes a starter. He needs to adjust to the speed of the game. Boeckman hasn't had any game experience in two years.

Boeckman may turn out to be a great starting QB in the future but he needs time to adjust. Zwick was the starting QB when the Buckeyes won the Alamo game and now some people want to kick him to the curb. I'm for giving Zwick a chance to prove or disprove himself this year before I pass judgement.

Zwick is a year older and with a year's more experience. I can say the same for Smith however he is in the doghouse with Tressel at present. Let the upper classmen get their chance. They've worked hard for this opportunity.

Mangold talked about Boeckman in this article:

And Mangold said Todd Boeckman has been improving lately. Boeckman would start the Sept. 3 opener against Miami University if Zwick cannot, because Smith must finish his suspension for violating an NCAA rule.

"(Boeckman) started off a little slow with the ones (first team)," Mangold said. "He got the ‘ones jitters’ a little bit, but now that he’s been working in there a little bit more, he’s kind of come around and he’s slowed down a little bit."

I realize Troy needs to be practicing with the ones, but how does camp work? I thought during the season the 1s go against the 2s defense, and the 2s offense against the 1st offense. I think Santonio, Teddy and Tony are gonna get on the same page with Smith very quickly. Therefore, it could sort of be a good thing that Troy is getting lots of reps with our other WRs, like Lyons, Hall, Dukes (once he is healthy), etc.

nice to finally see this:

A little birdy with direct connections to a former player who works in the athletic department says Boeckman will start against both Miami, Oh and Texas.

If this comes true I am convinced you have a little voodoo doll or ouija board there in paradise. :wink2:
