Nobody wants that job. And they don't want to pay for a top coach. Their best bet is some young assistant coach looking for a head coaching job. Maybe grab a MAC or second tier coach.
I wouldn't say that. I'm not saying they could land a whale, but there are some things going for them...good facilities, a beautiful new stadium some distant tradition. I think they could attract a decent coach...a guy like Leach (though his antics would be a problem in the B10), maybe a Mangino, a Jim Leavitt...I think their best bet is to find somebody that has had some success. They'll never bubble up to the top of the B10, but they could get back to the level Mason got them to. This time they should just be happy with that.

Pipe Dream Busted Already

Tony Dungy has told Minnesota that he's not interested in returning to the sidelines to coach his alma mater.

Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi says he contacted Dungy after firing coach Tim Brewster on Sunday. Fans have been clamoring for the highly respected Dungy to come back to help a reeling Golden Gophers program return to competitiveness in the Big Ten.

Maturi says Dungy told him he doesn't want to get back into coaching, but added that Dungy offered to help the school find a suitable replacement for Brewster.

Maturi says he will lean on Dungy and other prominent alumni for help through the process, but ultimately the choice will be his alone.

If Maturi screws it up again this badly my guess is that he will be gone, too.

Are they looking to hire a replacement right now or at the end of the season? Wouldn't it be damn near impossible to hire somebody to finish out the rest of the year if they were already coaching somewhere else? I wouldn't care for having a head coach that would do that either.

It seemed like no one asked the administration (at least from the stories I've read) if the university had any regret firing Mason, in light of the Brewster era.

Brewster will get a job in the NFL by the Spring, if he wants to return to the pros.

STILL trying to figure out why the fired Mason.. dumbasses.

Simple. The AD is an arrogant domer who wanted "his guy" in place to take advantage of the new stadium.

To get a feel for how arrogant this guy is, he's now taken it upon himself to tell the other Big Ten schools what they can and can't do regarding a Big Ten Hockey Conference. He thinks the conference shouldn't move forward with the idea because it interferes with Minnesota's traditional rivalries and--get this!--their regional television deals. This is after Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State all passed on Texas style television deals for themselves and signed those rights over to the Big Ten Network. A sacrifice in the tens of millions of dollars, but now we're supposed to respect his crappy little regional hockey money.

I can't imagine Mike Leach moving from the Florida Keys to Minnetonka, but I also can't imagine not at least ASKING him to leave.

You simply can't bring Mike Leach and his on record statements about women to the Big 10. The Minnesota faculty would have a shit hemorrhage and the rest of the Big 10 faculties would begin with the wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Some proven candidates include former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, Houston's Kevin Sumlin and Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.

"I haven't really given it much thought because it surprised me that they fired Brewster but, you know, I mean it's a good program," Leach said on his Sirius XM radio show. "It's in the Big Ten. And, you know, right now I'm in a position where I'm willing to listen to anybody."

Former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer, former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti and Minnesota alum and current Montreal Allouettes coach Marc Trestman are other notable names being mentioned

There's some names for you. Keep an eye on Frazier. He worked for Dungy in Indy, and if Dungy goes public with his support, Maturi will really be under pressure to hire him.

On a sidenote, Phil Fulmer in the Big 10???? Big 10 recruiting would never be the same.
