Griz, I can absolutely see that sometimes...but I also know that you don't get to that level without a method to the madness.
These guys watch more film in a week than you could imagine. There is a chart for every situation and a tendency for everything the opponent does.
You hear about Coaches scripting their first 10 plays or so...that is to get an idea on adjustments from the defense. How will they adjust if we motion Beanie out to 5 wide? Ok, now let's do this based on that...
As much as it is a chess game, it is also a game of simplicity...if you cannot maintain the trenches, you will likely lose. If you commit turnovers...you will likely lose. Penalty yards? Not good.
In no way am I saying JT is perfect or that he is innovative as an OC...what I will say is that the man knows his football and makes his decisions based on what the opponents have shown. However, as seen in the last two years, when the mortal sins of football are committed, you fall behind quickly...that takes your plan and tosses it out the window. Give a team like LSU or Florida the go-ahead to pin their ears back and bring it, and I don't care if you are USC, Texas, or anyone else in CFB...you are likely in trouble.
I have questions about the game plan and the playcalling...however, I also have complete faith that JT would have an answer for my question and is definitely privy to something I either didn't know or didn't see.
