Buckeye Offensive Coordinator Discussion (merged)

I think this really puts things into perspective. Having said that, I must admit that I found our offense very predictable and wonder how we constantly ended up in third and long.

We were playing against the best or one of the best defenses in the country. That will do it to you.
And Tress believes in the "chess game". It's his style. His record proves he has a handle on things.
Can he improve? Of course. He wants to improve.
Schemes/plays will only get you so far and then players must execute!
We were out executed. Plain and simple.

You won't hear me EVER wish for any coach but JT, but it felt like John Cooper on the sidelines the last 2 championship games. JT was always known for making good adjustments. Maybe he tried it this time too, but it wasn't evident if he did.

He has had moments when the talent has been insane (last year, '05, first half of '02, first 3/4 of this year) but other than that its been pretty bad at times.

You cant possibly tell me that the game plan for the offense in the last 2 national championship games have been anything less than terrible

What the heck are you taling about? How can the talent level change during the middle or the last 25% of a year baring injuries..... Please explain....

Well you answered your own question, in '02 losing Clarett to injury was a major blow.

As for the other three years....you got me.

Thanks for the insight Grad, we (I) seem to forget about the mistakes that put the Buckeyes behind the 8-ball. LSU and UF were both able to put us into a position of being predictable and that has to be an awful place to be as a player and Offensive coach when facing a team as talented as the Gators or the Tigers.

Griz, I can absolutely see that sometimes...but I also know that you don't get to that level without a method to the madness.

These guys watch more film in a week than you could imagine. There is a chart for every situation and a tendency for everything the opponent does.

You hear about Coaches scripting their first 10 plays or so...that is to get an idea on adjustments from the defense. How will they adjust if we motion Beanie out to 5 wide? Ok, now let's do this based on that...

As much as it is a chess game, it is also a game of simplicity...if you cannot maintain the trenches, you will likely lose. If you commit turnovers...you will likely lose. Penalty yards? Not good.

In no way am I saying JT is perfect or that he is innovative as an OC...what I will say is that the man knows his football and makes his decisions based on what the opponents have shown. However, as seen in the last two years, when the mortal sins of football are committed, you fall behind quickly...that takes your plan and tosses it out the window. Give a team like LSU or Florida the go-ahead to pin their ears back and bring it, and I don't care if you are USC, Texas, or anyone else in CFB...you are likely in trouble.

I have questions about the game plan and the playcalling...however, I also have complete faith that JT would have an answer for my question and is definitely privy to something I either didn't know or didn't see.

Grad, fully Agreed! However, I see us not involving our talent pool with any consistence. I see us not using plays that should build confidence in a QB that appears to have a confidence issues after his performance in the MSU game, IMHO. I've just feel like we are lacking many plays that are commonly successful in football. EX: TE Drag, flanker screen, bootleg, etc.....

I do trust Tressel but if anyone thinks that our teams, in the last two championship games, was the better prepared team, they weren't. Tressel being the Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator may be to much.

I wouldn't mind seeing a high caliber full time Offensive Coordinator that would mesh well with Coach T and let Bollman work strictly with developing the Offensive line.

If you could go after any Offensive Coordinators who would be you top three picks?

  1. Charlie Stubbs (current OC) University of Tulsa
  2. Jeff Brohm (current OC) University of Louisville
  3. John Shannon (current OC) University of Toledo
No order but these are me picks.

ill defer to you, but IMHO, they dont have to adjust because Beanie (or any RB before him) has never gotten the ball in that situation. you actually have to show the defense that the threat of a screen pass to the RB out wide is real.

Why not give someone like Coach Hazell, who is familiar with the system and players, a chance to call the game -- even if it is only for 1 of the pre-USC games or in the spring, just to see what he can cook up.

:) LV, it was just the first example that popped in my head...the point remains the same. The script is used to see adjustments...

One player getting injured (MoC) brought the offense to a halt in '02, but I still dont know what to make of what happened the last 3 games this year
