Buckeye Offensive Coordinator Discussion (merged)

Folanator

Brawndo's got electrolytes...
Interesting thread from the O zone and the insiders.

"Ron Erhardt(NFL O.C.) was at the WH today---Reports from one of the assistants in the football recruiting office, was that he was interviewing about becoming, or possibly assisting Jim Bollman as Offensive Coordinator and assisting or taking over the playcalling from Jim Tressel. Has a long background with the Tressels. Coached with Lee Tressel at Baldwin Wallace. Interesting development"

and

"Ehrhardt, 72 years old, has been around for a long, long time. He was a head coach at North Dakota State (won at least one national championship) in the late 1960s and early 1970s, then went to the New England Patiots for quite a few years and was head coach there, 1979-81.

He was Bill Parcells' OC for a couple of Super Bowl winners (1986 and 1990) with the Giants. And of course, he was with the Steelers as the OC (about 1992-95) and developed ways for Kordell Stewart to touch the ball in his pre-QB years there.

Ehrhardt has coached in every offensive system known to man.

Hard to imagine Ehrhardt was in the WHAC for more than social call or two act as a consultant or trouble-shooter."

Don't see him as a new OC, but any advise to play calling and technique would be awsome.

I don't know about how that would effect the coaching structure but who will end up coaching the Offensive line??? Thats the main problem (only IMO) with this Offense or at least the foundation that is missing. I sure hope they get John Peterson will switch his whole attention to the Offensive line. Now that would be something to get excited about.

When asked if he had thought about talking to Snyder about scrapping the soft zone during the last drive by Purdue.

"No," Tressel said. "I don't like to jump in with three minutes to go and all of a sudden be part of it. I wasn't sitting in their meeting rooms. You only have time to do a certain amount of things and I probably try to do too many already."

Is this telling? Or am I bored? Is Coach hinting that he might be giving up some of his duties next season?

I think I'm just bored!

i think jt realizes that bollman's ol approach isnt working. i'm sure that will be rectified. i dont see jt relinquishing his playcalling duties.

i would think that many oc's would be reluctant to come to osu where they would be responsible for developing a system and gameplan, only to not be able to call the plays come gameday.

JT will let go of the offensive reigns when he resigns or is fired. Not one moment sooner. I have realized that complaining about this offense is moot. What you see is what you get as long as he is our HC. End of story.

but by the same token, one has to think that tressel see's the inadequacies of this offense, and will look to rectify them. yes osu averaged 435 ypg in '02 when clarett was healthy, but it shouldnt take a clarett to be efficient offensively.

that being said, there are certainly better offensive minds out there than jim bollman and joe daniels. hazell is a step in the right direction, as is peterson for OL duties.

I don't know. As the year has worn on I can't complain too much about the offensive play calling when it matters. The offensive brain trust has evolved the offensive schemes to complement their players better. The execution is what has been lacking the most lately.

The thing I get worried about is Tressel will not run these plays until OSU is down 14 on the road against a tough team like Purdue. To suddenly expect the players to execute the more wide open offensive plays perfectly when they haven't run them throughout the earlier part of the game or against the lesser quality opponents of the previous weeks seems like folly to me. I'lll defer to Tressel though on whether or not practice alone should be enough. Maybe it should be.

I honestly don’t think there is a problem with the scheme. The problem lies along the offensive line. I really believe that if we get better play and development in the offensive line that people wouldn’t be even talking about the offense. Hopefully, we see some changes in the role by coaches in player development with the offensive line.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

General question for anyone who knows. Does JT do the offensive game planning along with calling the offensive plays during the game? I have never fully understood Bollman's role. I know he is OC in title only and handles the -line, but does he do the game plannnig for the offense before they ever hit the field?

Part of the reason we haven't seen some plays used thus far is that they've been saving them for this week.

ALso, I think Tressel will play different this week with a lead than most weeks. He realizes that a larger lead (even an extra FG) will just cause the crowd to explode and the defense can feed off of that. Whereas last week he was in a pretty hostile environment, with a team that had struggled on the road all season, and a defense that could not stop the Purdue team. Once the defense (which was young and played its heart out, and finally was permitted to play man-to-man) started stopping them, the playcalling on O changed.
