2015 Offense Discussion

Really interesting situation we are in now for sure. The offense in transition, new play caller who also manages the O Line, etc. More weapons than ever. Seems like that would make it tough to find your identity. On a side note, if you asked me preseason which players from last year I thought I would miss the most I probably would have listed in order: Mike B, Doran Grant and then D Smith. With the way that Tommy and Gareon are playing I'd say a this point it's D Smith. Especially with Cardale being the starter and a different offensive philosophy.

Also think we miss the excellent permiter blocking of Evan Spencer.....saw Jalin miss a block or two last week and nobody so far is even close to Spencer's blocking level. It has shown with Zekes runs on the edge.

** I always think about coaches setting themselves up for later in the year - not wanting to tip their hand or creating misdirection by looking a certain way early and then using that perceived tendency to trick coaches later. Maybe JT and the read option come back later in the year. And who knows how Brax will be used. Like I said......very interesting time right now.

That's where we miss Noah Brown the most. He was a great perimeter blocker.

Excellent points from all. Like you all said it seems the shift from zone read is a indication its Cardale's job now. I feel very conflicted because on one hand i love what Cardale brings and what he's done, but In saying that I'm worried (silly right?) About us changing something thats been so intricate to our success the past few years.

Also if Cardale gets hurt or needs replaced then what? Do we just transition back into the zone read? I am not a fan of severely altering our style for one person because we wont always have that person. I understand you dont force something thats not someone's strength but then again we do have Braxton who has years of experience with the read. My question is why does Braxton only have to run counters or power? Why not the zone? Both the zone read and plays with zeke as a lead blocker give us a numerical advantage so thats moot. I think our xbrax package needs expanding other than the run plays we saw (im not talking about passing plays either).

As was stated Cardale has to start doing a few things imo. First hit his intermediate throws, second stop backing up in the pocket and third stop jumping when he throws ( especially across his body). I think our QBs should always be moving sideways or more preferably forward that way when nothings there they can take off.

This is a running QB system and it still is. We don't need to stay in the pocket with stubbornness if its 3rd down if we can keep the chains moving with a third down scramble.

Wonder if Urban takes the play-calling duty on offense, and let Warriner focus on getting the O-line as nasty as they were at the end of last season. Still plenty of time, and they started pretty slow last year, too. They'll get things figured out hopefully by the end of next week's game.

We need a vertical passing game. Hawaii and NIU were begging us to go deep. They both tried to take away our inside run game by alignment, and were selling out to stop our edge runs with no respect for a deep pass. Probably missing Devin Smith alot more than we realize, but I haven't even seen that many deep shots called to test it out. We also ran the counter against Oregon so many times with a fly sweep fake. I feel like it would kill this D, but I guess it's dissapeared from the playbook?

I said it last year and I will say it again, the myth that Cardale frees up Eze because defenses have to respect his big arm is exactly that, a myth. Defenses are going to play their scheme and responsibility no matter who is at QB. Rules are rules and your job is your job whether the QB has a howitzer or not. The fundamentals do not change just because one QB can throw it 10 yards farther than another QB. Obviously, teams this year have loaded the box to take away our running game, and Cardale has been behind center. Total BS made up by journalists that are clueless about coaching football teams.

One of the glaring issues I see so far is our perimeter blocking. I know our OLine isn't clicking on all cylinders like it was at the end of last season, but our wideouts aren't staying on their blocks very long.

Agreed. We need a more balanced offense, something that JT provides. Cardale hasn't been able to pick up defenses or make smart decisions with the ball, which hasn't changed from last year and always baffled to me to why people thought he'd ever be a 1st round draft pick. His picks were brutal, and the offense doesn't seem in sync with him. I hope JT gets a chance to start out the game and get in rhythm, as we'll see that the offense doesn't need a deep threat as many think. Having EzE and when teams feel the need to load the box, JT hitting the open man with his quick release will keep defenses honest. O line play hasn't been the best because Cardale also tends to hold on to the ball longer, JTs quicker decision making can't ease up some of that. Time will tell, WMU will be another interesting game to show this years team identity

Agreed. Starting a game changes your entire mentality and allows you to prepare better. Coming in off the bench 2 weeks in a row with your team down by a score is completely different.
