2015 Offense Discussion

A underrated part of our offensive putridness is how our team may feel about our team captain and humble leader sitting the bench.

Not that we would tank on purpose but confidence in one guy over the other can certainly make a huge difference. I know Jt has played but he hasn't been the starter and he hasn't been given all the reps.

I remember as a junior we had a kid who took a year off football (drug addiction) and came back to play as a senior. We all knew he was our starting outside backer but when we opened the season he was the back up (ill never understand why) and once he was given hid spot back the defense went to another level. Just simply getting the player who we knew was our guy back in the fold was all we needed.

Im sure setting on a starter and our team captain is the first step to getting this right.

The OL is not getting to the second level in 3 man fronts the line has got to get the LB's blocked..we have run very little two TE sets. We miss the blocking of Spencer and Heurman plus our TE cant threaten the seam like Heueman could. 3 yd passes on 3rd and 6 is a losing scheme.

I posted in Cardale's thread:

It seems to me like the coaches are failing to call plays to take advantage of Cardale's biggest strength- his arm.

If your primary play calls are going to be option plays and swing passes in the flat, that really isn't putting Cardale in a position to utilize his skill set.

I think the problems on offense in general and Cardale in particular revolve around several things.

1. The offensive line isn't blocking well.

2. The loss of Herman is being felt strongly and the play calling has been questionable at best (for example, on third and 4 with JT in they throw the ball twice and fail to convert- if Cardale was in they probably would have run two QB draws- it just feels like the staff doesn't understand or is utterly failing to utilize their talent).

3. The loss of Smith, Spencer and Brown is being felt strongly- apparently no deep threat has emerged for Cardale to throw to (Smith) and the perimeter blocking hasn't been great (Spencer and Brown) to say the least.

4. The coaches mishandled the QB situation: both are underperforming and seemingly lacking confidence- almost certainly due to the uncertainty at the position thanks to the coaches.

5. Partially blaming this on #4- turnovers.

What's the answer? Well, hopefully Warriner picks his game up and the play calling and play of the offensive line improves drastically.

I think the young WRs will naturally get better with perimeter blocking and someone has to emerge as a deep threat, right? Right!?

As far as the QBs, I really don't think there is a good answer at this point. Hopefully Meyer can work a miracle there, but at the very least can we please call plays that utilize each player's respective skill set a little better?

..we have run very little two TE sets.
They ran two sets all day against Hawaii with Baugh and Vannett motioning from one side of the line to the other.
I said it last year and I will say it again, the myth that Cardale frees up Eze because defenses have to respect his big arm is exactly that, a myth.
Defenses aren't going to respect the deep ball if you don't throw it deep. You actually have to successfully run those plays and complete those passes for that to work. So far this year neither of those have happened.

Agreed. We need a more balanced offense, something that JT provides. Cardale hasn't been able to pick up defenses or make smart decisions with the ball, which hasn't changed from last year and always baffled to me to why people thought he'd ever be a 1st round draft pick. His picks were brutal, and the offense doesn't seem in sync with him. I hope JT gets a chance to start out the game and get in rhythm, as we'll see that the offense doesn't need a deep threat as many think. Having EzE and when teams feel the need to load the box, JT hitting the open man with his quick release will keep defenses honest. O line play hasn't been the best because Cardale also tends to hold on to the ball longer, JTs quicker decision making can't ease up some of that. Time will tell, WMU will be another interesting game to show this years team identity

I'm sorry, but JT was just as bad as--if not worse than--Cardale yesterday. He threw a pick, threw another ball that should have been a pick (in the red zone, no less), misread defenses and rolled into pressure, missed wide open receivers, under threw guys, and stared his receivers down to the point of allowing defenders to react and break the pass up.

Not saying Cardale had a great game; he obviously did not. But I don't get this groundswell of support around here for JT, when, for the second game in a row,he had a chance to come in for an ineffective Cardale but again failed to show that he deserves to be the starter over Cardale.

The only person who has an argument to be the starter based on the past two weeks' qb play is Collier.

Too many penalties and sloppy ball control. No offense can consistently over come 1st and 15s 2nd and 20s especially when they're coming with the deflatating feeling of a big play coming back.
This will start to click, hopefully sooner rather than later. Too much talent in field and managing team

I hope we are not in for a long season. Are we now coming to realize that we miss the play calling of Tom Herman?
Other teams are not respecting us like they did last year. And also last year we were flying under the radar most of the time.
Western Michigan played hard against Michigan St...... and after watching our offense play the way they did, you can be sure
they will be really coming after us hard.

Some thing has to happen with the "play calling" real fast. At times against NIU, we
seemed to be getting it together on a couple of the drives, but the pass into the end zone was damn near intercepted. We should
have kept on the ground and scored at TD. But we had to settle for a 3 point score. I sure hope Urban can come up with some sort of
offensive scheme that will fit with all this talent we have on board.

Playing when you're substituted in to try and save the day, is different mindset than starting the game from play 1. I'm not saying JT set the world on fire, but he doesn't have the back foot heave ho's that Cardale does. Cardale was given 3 straight games to start and 1 of them he was decent, and against 2 teams we should've rolled, our offense has looked inept. No one would argue that we shouidve left Cardale in yesterday, or even against Hawaii. Losing to Va Tech last year would get us in the playoff, losing to NIU would not. I'd like to see JT start next week and see how the offense performs under him from the start. And actually after yesterday's game, JT came in and indeed showed that he should start, even with a pick of his own.

OHIO STATE SURVIVES SCARE AGAINST NORTHERN ILLINOIS, 20-13, YET QUESTIONS REMAIN OVER ITS OFFENSIVE IDENTITY

59880_h.jpg,qitok=pWv8TjLe.pagespeed.ce.p8xrcsCMwW.jpg

Before he even stepped to the podium, Urban Meyer knew exactly what kind of questions were coming.

"So I know there's going to be a million questions about the offense. And there should be," Meyer said Saturday mere minutes after his top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes survived MAC power Northern Illinois, 20-13. "There's a little discombobulation that's got to get worked out, and we've got good players, good coaches, good scheme."

Yes but Baugh didn't play Sat. I hope it's what has been discussed that can be fixed but I am worried it's more internal issues like the 86 Bears.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying, however, we did this same crap in 2013 with Herman.

I will go with this. I don't think our QB's are confident enough with our receivers to throw the ball deep and have them fight for the ball. They don't seem like they are on the same page as well. Is this a carry over of one QB not getting enough reps with them?

I think this pretty much nails it.

We also have alot of skill players in very undefined roles, and I don't think the coaches have figured out how to put it all together. If/when they do, the QB issues will probably dissapear quickly.
