2015 Offense Discussion

I gotta say if they ever went to two balls, I would fear Jim Harbaugh.

That guy has tons of experience handling two balls at once, admittedly with his chin, but experience is experience and that experience we are lacking, fortunately, not that there is anything wrong with that other than it just being gross.
You are so rotten, but I gotta admit I lol'd.

OHIO STATE HAS SCORED EXACTLY 42 POINTS IN FIVE OF ITS LAST SIX GAMES

59329_h.jpg,qitok=uoPVSn6x.pagespeed.ce.FU0fpwfHm3.jpg

For Ohio State, 42 is the magic number.

Well, at least it’s been that way in five of the Buckeyes’ last six games.

Glance down a list of Ohio State’s recent games and there’s something that almost certainly catches the eye: The Buckeyes have managed to score exactly 42 points in three-straight games and five of its last six. That streak began with last season’s 42-27 victory against Indiana, and continued through Monday night’s season-opening 42-24 win over Virginia Tech.

Along the way, Ohio State also picked up a 42-28 win against Michigan, a 42-35 triumph over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and a 42-20 national-championship victory against Oregon. The only time the Buckeyes didn’t score exactly 42 points over their last six games? That’d be the 59-0 rout of Wisconsin in last season’s Big Ten championship game.

“It’s great being on a team this good,” running back Ezekiel Elliott said following the season-opening win over the Hokies. “I think it’s kind of scary, honestly. … I think it’s just a scary thing because we can be very dominant.”

Against Hawaii the "magic number" should be 42 in the first half.

TAYLOR DECKER ON OHIO STATE'S OFFENSIVE LINE PLAY: 'WE'VE JUST GOTTA GET BETTER'

59564_h.jpg,qitok=gYQNs9Cz.pagespeed.ce.sQCgn5Idqx.jpg

As Taylor Decker strolled over to his table inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Monday afternoon, Ohio State’s mammoth left tackle had a somewhat stern look at his face, almost as if he was fully expecting to answer multiple questions pertaining to his position group and its lackluster performance Saturday against Hawai’i.

The Buckeyes won the game handedly — it was a 38-0 final — but up front there were multiple breakdowns in both the running and passing game as Ohio State allowed a pair of sacks and running back Ezekiel Elliott averaged just 3.7 yards per carry as he was hit in the backfield on a number of occasions.

“Obviously we didn’t execute to the level of our expectations,” Decker said. “There’s all the excuses there that you can use, but we’re not gonna use those. … We’ve just gotta get better. That’s all it is, we’ve just gotta get better.”

Decker was referring to Ohio State’s quick turnaround as it played its season-opener Monday night at Virginia Tech, then had to come back just five days later and play another game against the Rainbow Warriors.

The Buckeyes also spent an inordinate amount of time preparing for that first game and the Hokies’ Bear defense and Hawai’i runs a 3-4 scheme, which is a much different look. Yet, Ohio State’s performance against the Rainbow Warriors should have been much better.

“The biggest concern is the offensive line gets a lot of credit around here. We are an offensive line drive, absolutely an offensive line driven program,” head coach Urban Meyer said. “Our success over the last three years and two games is because of our offensive line, and with that comes a lot of responsibility. We expect them to play much better.”

Bye Bye Read Option

BarrettReadOption.jpg

Urban Meyer believes in spreading teams out and using the entire field offensively. Stretch the defense to the brink and then break them has always been the goal when his team has the ball.

Meyer has also always liked mobile quarterbacks that make the defense concerned about the run and the pass from behind center. With weapons on the outside and a dual-threat signal caller, Meyer’s offense is a headache for defenses to stop.

Throughout his coaching career, which featured stops at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, and now Ohio State, the quarterback option has been another wrinkle to confuse defenses, making them decide if they will take away the running back or the quarterback with the ball. While Tim Tebow didn’t run the option all the time, it was part of the arsenal for the Gators during their national dominance under Meyer.

Last season, Buckeye quarterback J.T. Barrett executed the option game to near perfection with running back Ezekiel Elliott. Often the quarterback would run the option so well that even television cameras would focus on the wrong player.

With Cardale Jones as the starting quarterback in last year’s postseason, after Barrett broke his foot in the regular season finale, OSU ran less option plays in a slightly more traditional offense. With Jones as the starting quarterback this year, this trend continues.

“The read option is not a big part of our offense any more,” Meyer said on his call-in show Thursday.

I don't get it to be honest guys... Trust in the coaches and all that jazz.

In saying that how the shit can we just give up the most productive play we've had the past 4 years? Would 85 yards through the heart of the south had been as effective without the threat of the QB keeping it on the other side? For 4 years you're telling me we've cultured this option and we're just going to give it up now that our guys have mastered it? Color me really confused with this move though.

I'm just going to let this play out until I doubt this but if we look out of whack again against NIU I know i'm going to question our QB situation handling as well as our strange decision to abandon our base concept of offense. This just doesn't seem like something Urban normally would do because he's stated many times before people will come into OSU to run our offense we will not learn their ways. Our offense has been the read option, jet sweeps, and play action.

Like I said lets see what happens Saturday...

I feel like 1 of 2 things has happened

1) They have been practicing more Pro Style offense this offseason with Jones while retaining some of the zone read/speed option plays, and our OLine is going through some growing pains with it. If that is the case I understand.

2) Urban really didn't know who he would choose to be the QB up until game time, and figured either could run his plays with no issue. Everyone was so mystified at how seamlessly Cardale took over the offense in the championship run last year so we thought the same would hold through. Two games in and we are seeing that we are missing last years personnel more than we thought.

At this point I believe Urban is going to have to become decisive. Pick a QB and go with that guy, and pick an offensive philosophy and go with it. I understand its not easy, but its better to make a decision and mold the team now rather than waiting for MSU to come to Columbus and doing so then. Im no football coach by any means and I trust Urban 100%, Im just merely speaking from a tactical and military point of view of preparing for your enemy well in advance.

Coach has said that you adapt you scheme to the players you have. He has Cardale. He is adapting.

If that holds true. Coach said he was the starter but is still listing the QB starting position as an "or" and also saying JT can win back the job. If JT does in fact win back the job, do we stay with the Pro Style offense? I think that is whats most confusing to me. Were suiting the offensive style to Jones but have yet to really confirm Jones as "the guy" no matter what.

More than anything, I think his statements are a direct indication that JT will not win the job back this year barring something really bad. Just my read, but this seems like he is going with Jones.
