2012 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I'm pleasantly surprised by what some of the recruits are saying, specifically the ones from the Cleveland area that were interviewed by the Plain Dealer. That they kinda expected this. I guess Urban/Luke and co didn't really trust Gene and prepped the recruits for the worst case scenario.

I would have expected nothing less in terms of talking to the recruits by the staff. To have any credibility now and in to the future, they needed to let them know where things could possibly end up. The worst thing to have done would be exactly what Gene did and make it sound like nothing was going to happen.

The long run is the main concern. If there is not another scholarship given -- 2012 will still be a great recruiting class (as long as there are few defections).

The concern is '13 & '14, if they don't get another blue chip OT to develop for 2-3 years from now. There are 19 recruits committed for 2012, there are only 17 Scholarships available. Offers are out for LBs, WRs, DBs, DEs, QBs(?), and OL.

Two players have to leave the team for all of next year's current commits to come aboard. If Sweat is given another year of eligibility, then an additional player will have to leave. It has been suggested that five more current scholarship players will leave, which will make it six total, which is much higher than past years.

They need to get an Offensive lineman (or two) this year, for 2014. (Of course if last year's OL red-shirts develop, this concern disappears.)

This is all true, but

1) I don't believe that all players currently on the team will remain so. There's likely to be some attrition simply because a new sherrif is in town.
2) The staff will obviously adjust the existing personnel to enable a 2-deep at Tackle
3) Yeah, the NCAA sactions hurt a bit. They are supposed to. It's not supposed to be a cakewalk for a team with FTM.

matcar: "1) I don't believe that all players currently on the team will remain so."

With the current situation, not only will there be attrition -- there is no choice. Either 2 more current players have to leave, or 2 verbal'd recruits cannot get scholarships.

Penalty discomfort is expected, but this late NCAA ruling has put the team in a bind concerning 2012 and future planning.

On the other hand, if the penalties had come out earlier -- the recent 4 & 5 star committments may have been more interested in other schools.

Perhaps the NCAA can decide who should be, or not be, a Buckeye next year.....

Can an entire class redshirt? Just wondered if every one of em decided to take a redshirt and come back with all of their eligibility after the bowl ban. Doubt it would happen but I wondered if it were a possibility if they all wanted to.

BTW, that would be awesome.

Obviously it's legal but reckless. You want your classes to be staggered as evenly as possible. Redshirting 25 players also risks a class with 30-40 kids in it if the recruiting class after that has 5-15 true freshman that see the field.

It's not like urban will struggle to recruit behind them and needs to delay their careers.

The freedom to redshirt will be a blessing, particularly in contrast to this season, but you can't over do it.

The 2016 Senior Day intros would take hours.

I'm not sure I get the point of this post. Yeah, the NCAA ruling puts tOSU in a small bind. That was to be expected. Scholly losses were always a real, and in my mind, expected outcome. You just deal with it and move on. I'm quite confident the new staff will make it work.

I was sharing my thoughts in a discussion forum. Like most people who follow OSU recruiting, I am interested the Buckeye's getting the best class of recruits.

I have been doubting that there would be enough attrition for the 23 to 25 person class that was predominantly being discussed, and now the total number is reduced by 3. The self-imposed scholarship reductions were not necessarily, going to effect this class -- and now they do.

Now some players or some verbal'd recruits will not be on the team next year. This is a change from: "some will be leaving, and that will make room for more commitments."

Also, based on the roster, I believe the Coaches would now be forced to focus on O-linemen in this class.

I'm not complaining, whining, or questioning; I am just discussing and trying to clarify the situation.

Is the scholarship reduction going to affect the '12 class? I thought it was the '13, '14, and the '15 classes that were going to be affected.

We have to be at 82 by the start of fall practice 2012.

I don't think this is a huge deal and we will still be able to take another 5-7 this year. It's managable for sure...
