2012 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Having 82 vice 85 ships for 2012, 2013, and 2014 isn't that bad, provided we can continue to attract the top-level prospects in our positions of most need. We should be just fine.
Exactly, we will be just fine. The only class this bowl ban impacts is 2012. I don't expect any of the current commits to bolt. Might impact guys we were fighting for or longshots, but even if they don't add another kid (they will), that class is ranked #5 on scout.

2013 and beyond I don't think it's significant at all. I think the days of spending 2 schollies a year on project OL are done. We also typically have given walk-ons a scholarship or two a year, IIRC. Sucks that that may have to go on hold, but if it does, so be it.

This really isn't nearly as catastrophic as people are making it out to be at all. It's a speedbump.

Numbers are a concern

OSU has 2 OL Verbals so far for 2012-- and I am not confident either will be capable backups next year.

The team has 19 total verbals -- hoping that none of them flip. With Taylor Graham leaving, we did have 20 schollies for 2012. With the NCAA Ruling, we now only have 17. Several players will leave the program; but now 2 more must leave.

If I am mistaken, feel free to correct me.

My point was directed at handling the scholorship reductions going forward. The previous staff had a bit of a habit of spending a couple of scholarships a year on project/lower rated OL. I don't think that will be a factor with Meyer and staff in the future. Simply stated, they have to be, and I think will be, a little more selective with the offers.

As for next year, there's still a few pretty good guys out there that are legit possibilities. How the penalty will impact that, I have no earthly idea. But, there isn't a better recruiter in the country than UFM, and I think he's earned my faith in his abilities to remedy the roster issues as soon as possible.

Walkons getting scholarships will have to go away for a couple years but should eventually return.
Solid recruiting will help nullify the impact of 3 less per.
It could have been much worse.
We'll be just fine.

Yep! It will actually help Coach next year having more time to recruit and evaluate prospects.

Walk on scholies may not be hurt as much as we are saying. Often those are not planned scholarships to be given out based on merit.

Once everybody signs in February recruiting is pretty much over for the year. There may be unsigned kids, but rarely those you would want to invest a 4 year ship on. Between Feb and Aug there may be injuries, transfers, or non-qualifiers. Those ships can be given to a walk on for a year rather than simply let them fall on the floor.

Whether you are managing to 85 or 82 this will still happen.

Scholarship reductions

The long run is the main concern. If there is not another scholarship given -- 2012 will still be a great recruiting class (as long as there are few defections).

The concern is '13 & '14, if they don't get another blue chip OT to develop for 2-3 years from now. There are 19 recruits committed for 2012, there are only 17 Scholarships available. Offers are out for LBs, WRs, DBs, DEs, QBs(?), and OL.

Two players have to leave the team for all of next year's current commits to come aboard. If Sweat is given another year of eligibility, then an additional player will have to leave. It has been suggested that five more current scholarship players will leave, which will make it six total, which is much higher than past years.

They need to get an Offensive lineman (or two) this year, for 2014. (Of course if last year's OL red-shirts develop, this concern disappears.)

Why would Sweat get another year? He's a senior and played all 4 correct?
