Another opinion that may be unpopular, but I'm sorry - LJ needs to retire. His tenure here was incredible for a lot of years, but since 2020 one thing that is hard to deny about his DL is underachievement. We recruit way too well to have a DL that isn't as dominant as it should be on a regular basis and has been pushed around in too many big games. We take high 5* recruits and get low 4*/high 3* results. Bow out with grace.

For this putting this on LJ, I’m not…necessarily…disagreeing or dismissing that…but it absolutely could be the Knowles scheme instead. For example, the Steelers used to have a DL that established contain and filtered people to the LBs to make a million tackles. Guys like Brett Keisel were really effective at what they did, but they weren’t used as elite pass rushers in that scheme. It’s hard to tell who is at fault, coaches or players, or which coaches, or which players, but something ain’t right.

I think the player development, especially in the edge, has been lacking severely for years.

Also tough for me to give LJ too much credit for the Bosas and Chase. They showed flashes of brilliance from the minute they suited up. Watching Zach Harrison, Coop, and Baron actually get better at the NFL level makes me wonder what the hell happened.

Ohio State v Oregon

Poor staff decisions and even worse clock management have led to yet another Ohio State loss.

It was another big game for Ohio State under Ryan Day, and so naturally the outcome was another crushing loss. The Buckeyes fell in Eugene, 32-31, despite holding a 31-29 lead with four minutes remaining and then having a first-and-10 at the Oregon 28-yard line with 28 seconds left needing only a field goal to win the game.

We have come to expect these types of performances under Day, who is now 1-7 against AP Top 5 opponents. Ohio State hasn’t won anything of significance with the current head coach at the helm since the 49-28 victory over Clemson in the Sugar Bowl during the 2020 season, and even that immediately led to being boat-raced by Alabama in the national title game.

Since then, the Buckeyes have lost three-straight games to rival Michigan, lost to Oregon at home in 2021, choked away the Peach Bowl against Georgia in 2022 and failed to show up against Missouri in 2023. Winning games at the highest level is a clear challenge, but when you recruit as well as Ohio State does, even shooting less than 50% in these contests is simply not cutting it.

There were a plethora of reasons that Ohio State lost to Oregon on Saturday night, but chief among them is Ryan Day’s baffling defensive staff alignment. Jim Knowles is going to get a ton of flack for his performances in these big games, and some of that is warranted, but the overarching reason for the Buckeyes’ defensive shortcomings in these moments is a stubborn, ineffective defensive line coach.

Knowles came to Ohio State known for his defensive scheme that runs a base 4-2-5 structure with a few twists. One of those twists was the JACK position, a stand-up edge rusher that plays as a linebacker/defensive end hybrid capable of rushing the passer or dropping back into coverage to confuse opposing offenses. The Buckeyes have a ton of players on their roster that would be perfect for this position, including guys like Arvell Reese and CJ Hicks, who were basically recruited for that exact spot.

So, why does a position that is so important to Knowles’ scheme not exist at Ohio State? The answer is Larry Johnson.

Johnson has earned a reputation as one of the nation’s best defensive line coaches over his 26 years in the business. During the course of his career, he has produced nine first round NFL Draft picks. Eight different Buckeye defensive lineman have been named First Team All-American’s under Johnson’s tutelage. He is nothing short of a legend in the profession, but unfortunately for the Buckeyes, all of that is way in the past.

Ohio State has not fielded anything close to a good defensive line since the 2019 season, when Chase Young was basically wrecking opposing offenses by himself. Despite having five-star prospect after five-star prospect at his disposal year after year, Johnson has done nothing with it. In the two losses to Oregon and the three losses to Michigan, the Buckeyes have managed two sacks TOTAL. One of those was by Cody Simon, which means the defensive line has tallied ONE sack over those five losses.

A lack of pressure from the defensive line has been the one constant across all of these big game failures, and Johnson is to blame. Stuck in his ways, Johnson trots out his four-down front with zero creativity whatsoever, relying on each player to simply win his one-on-one matchups. That is all well and good... until you get into a talent equated game. There is hardly so much as a simple stunt from Ohio State’s defensive linemen, with four guys running straight into their blockers and remaining there until the play is over more often than not.

But what about that JACK position from Knowles’ scheme? Shouldn’t that mix things up for the pass rush? Sure, it would if Knowles was allowed to use the position.

Larry Johnson and Jim Knowles have feuded over the JACK position since the defensive coordinator arrived on campus. Rather than solving the dispute and telling the rest of his coordinators they must adapt to the man who is supposed to be the head coach of the defense in Knowles, Ryan Day has allowed LJ to play the seniority card and win the battle up front. Knowles, in effect, has control over only two-thirds of the defense, and the piece he is missing is both the most important one and the one that has been the least effective.

It is purely insane to allow this to continue. Early on, maybe you let Johnson continue to run his unit the way he wants because he had a proven track record, but those days are over. The defensive line has been a complete non-factor is all of these big game losses, letting the back end of the defense to get torched while the opposing quarterback can file his taxes in the backfield before making a throw.

The only thing Johnson has done effectively at Ohio State over the past five years is cost the team football games. Even his recruiting has taken a significant hit, with the Buckeyes missing out on several five-star prospects over the last few seasons as rumors of the 72-year-old’s retirement swirl. The few five-stars he does land he does nothing with, while the five-stars he misses, like Oregon’s Matayo Uiagalelei, go on to have a sack and two tackles for loss on Saturday night against the Buckeyes — more than Jack Sawyer and J.T. Tuimoloau did combined.

There are many other reasons Ohio State lost to Oregon on Saturday night. Ryan Day managed the clock horribly at the end of the game, not knowing the rules of the clock on the pass interference call despite being paid $10 million to coach football. Ohio State turned the ball over and allowed an onside kick. Denzel Burke looked like Tuf Borland trying to chase down Devonta Smith on every defensive snap. ALL of these things played a role in the loss.

However, the constant in these big game losses has been a bad defensive line, led by an assistant coach far past his prime while actively hamstringing the defensive coordinator. Knowles has not been great by any means, but he is forced to try and overcome the shortcomings of the front, which is nearly impossible to do if the quarterback has all day to throw. He is effectively scheming both against opposing offenses and his own defensive line, which is an insane thing to do at ANY program, let alone a place like Ohio State.

At the end of the day, this is Ryan Day’s fault as the CEO of the program. He could snap his fingers tomorrow and end this dispute for good, but he is too scared to hurt feelings. As the head coach at a program of this magnitude, that is completely unacceptable. It is time to be the big man in the room and move on from a system that clearly isn’t working.

Knowles relies on mis-direction before the snap. It's easy to stop a pass rush when you know there are only going to be 3 or 4 coming for the QB. Every. Single. Down.

It's also pretty easy when those 3 or 4 that are coming for the QB are the d-linemen only. The o-line just has to focus on picking up the 4 d-linemen since the likelihood of someone from another position is going to blitz is real low.

Knowles can show more guys coming in pre-snap but I'm sure there is enough tape to show that he rarely actually sends anyone else. I'm sure coaches just tell their o-line to focus on the 4 d-linemen and the RB can just pick up the extra guy if he comes.

Man, lot to unpack from this one.

The defense...woof. That was the worst defensive performance in years. They just flat out got their asses beat. The DL did absolutely nothing the entire game. Denzel Burke had the worst game of his career (and he's had plenty of bad ones, probably the weirdest career for an OSU player that I can remember). The tackling was laughably bad. Just flat out god awful execution across the board. Ransom makes a nice play on the 2 point attempt and his slow ass gets caught from behind. And where are his teammates to block for him? Those 2 points would have been huge, obviously. Just a pathetic display from the defense across the board that frankly I didn't think was possible from this team especially given how good they were last year.

Ryan Day...these losses in big games are becoming way too familiar. The lack of situational awareness and clock mismanagement in this game was mindblowing. How can you not be wary of an onside kick from the 50? Why are you not calling timeouts before the 2 minute warning and just letting precious seconds go to waste? He also obviously did not know the clock would continue running after the penalty at the end. Ending that game with a timeout in your pocket is coaching malpractice. I also feel like Day overreacts to situations that have happened in the past. He heard the criticism from the lack of aggressiveness at the end of the Georgia game and because of that was way too aggressive at the end of this game. We had the ball at the 28 yard line with 40+ seconds and a timeout. How in the fuck are we continuing to only throw the ball at that point? It just doesn't make sense. He took a ton of heat for handing the ball off to Hayden for one play in that Georgia game, but that was the right thing to do! It just didn't work out, and that happens sometimes. So this time we go full air raid and guess what, we get a soft ass OPI call that essentially ended the game. Just fucking stupid shit. The guy really just can't get out of his own way in big moments and it's starting to look like this is just who he is. How he & the team respond to this is going to be huge because his job should absolutely be on the line right now as far as I'm concerned.

If there's any positive to take from this game, it's that Will Howard answered all the questions (boneheaded final play aside). He was fantastic in this game, put the team on his back and did everything to win this game. And with competent coaching, would have won. Concerns about him are gone, at least for me.

Overall, a weird fucking game. It was very Brownsy in that sense. This loss sucks right now, a lot, but in the grand scheme of things, this team still has everything in front of them and I think they can do it. I would love our chances in a rematch with Oregon on a neutral field. But Day needs to wake the fuck up and so does the defense.

That wasn't an onside kick, he clearly just shanked it and got lucky it bounced off someone and back toward the other way
I know, that’s why I’m going to file that under crazy ass shit. It was an opportunity that we missed out on that, had it just gone for a FG, would have been a difference maker.

Also why I consider It to be a team loss. Far too many examples of “just one thing” being different and we’d have a different outcome. That’s notwithstanding the instances that Oregon had that were similar… but it certainly felt like we had more than our fair share of those things.

I guess I’ll be the weirdo and say after calming down I feel pretty encouraged after the game. First of all this was a complete failure by Ryan Day at the end of the game, let’s just get that out of the way. Will Howard is my guy, I love how he competes, he was locked in all game, he will make a mistake here and there but he will also make the routine plays you need out of your starting QB. Next, I love the physicality of the team, this team is pretty tough and plays with some edge. The OL was pretty good yesterday, I hope Simmons is ok, Donovan Jackson is just average, he is not on the level of Wyatt Davis. Tegra is green but aggressive #56 was a godsend because I can only imagine where our OL would be without him and the replacements played well.

Defensively our tackling continues to be poor which is irritating, there were so many plays that should have been stopped for losses or short gains that became bigger than what they were supposed to because of tackling. Our Edge guys are what they are, we need to stop hoping for something that may not come, we need to start getting Houston some more reps. Also #97 ain’t it. I thought our interior guys played well, Hamilton had been our best DT all year and he is going to be a riser on Draft boards for sure. Burke gotta shake whatever he has going on off before he cost himself a lot of money because I feel IGB should be CB1 at this point, too many mental and technical lapses with Burke. Outside of Burke, I thought the DBs competed and played pretty well. The linebackers sucked.

We need to run the ball more, that really should be the identity of this team and when we do pass, let’s take at least 3 deep shots.

Overall, a lot of the mistakes we made are correctable and to be honest, this is the type of team that needs to stay motivated, I’d rather lose this type of game than to win this game and lose to Nebraska because we have the big head. Ryan Day is not going to have too many more opportunities to prove he is a big time coach if he keeps fumbling away opportunities like this, especially as easy as this could have been.

Will can't throw deep.

DC Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

SOS drivel…
Its drivel to grow weary of hearing the same tired line after being shredded defensively for the last 5 games in a row against a top tier opponent?

Well let me ask you, when do you need to show you can stop the bleeding?

I like JK

But at some point it’s gotta stop and this year he has the talent to do that.

Or….do you mean it’s JK’s drivel?

After reading all the posts pointing fingers at who is responsible for this loss, it’s pretty obvious to me.

It was a TEAM loss. Pretty hard to argue that any one individual or position group were responsible. Hell, I’d even throw in some crazy ass shit with that (was it really even intended to be an) onside kick?

Yep, yesterday was a diagnosis of the program from top to bottom. The program is stuck in a purgatory of performing below the talent level against elite competition. The ultimate bridesmaid.

They were sloppy and failed to protect the ball early on. They did not respond to an obvious on-sides kick opportunity. We can illustrate with other similar issues.

The Buckeye coaches and players need to lose the Best Team in America mantra and replace it hunger and passion.

HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Considering his losses, Woody Hayes said, " There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you."

The Buckeyes didn't get the hell kicked out of them, but I hope their egos took a good bashing.

I may be wrong about these teams under Coach Day, but it seems to me that his coaches and players believe they can just show up and out-talent opponents. "You know what we're going to do, but we are better, faster, and more awesome!" "$20 million!"

While is it incredibly disappointing, there could be an opportunity to avenge this loss in a neutral venue. If it causes the Buckeye players and coaches to respect their opponents, feel a realistic sense of vulnerability, respond strategically and execute with passion, we may look back on this loss as a thing that kept the Buckeyes in the national championship race.
